The video was very helpful! Finding the security bit was more difficult...I finally found a 3 inch bit at Fastanal Part #0282008 / 059640 Power Bit / Ctrl: ia067341
I just spent an hour at Fry's to find the 'security' bits. I bought a big old set for $25,- but considering a new Rider 2 is going for $799,- I felt the investment was worthwhile. The reason I did this because the thing just wouldn't power up, be it in the bike cradle, plugged into power outlet just after it had been running on the bike and I had pulled it off. Resetting it did nothing. I had read somewhere that disconnecting/connecting the battery would do the trick and it did!
Thanks for this video. You are absolutely correct in not recommending these $700 paper weights. They are an absolutely disgraceful piece of junk. Mine broke down just after being out of warranty. You can see the horror stories all over the internet about these pieces of junk. I'll never buy TomTom again or advise anyone to do so. Buy Garmin. I've never had a problem with Garmin products.
i have had bought two tomtom sat navs in the past from ebay ,while they were running were a really nice sat navs but they seem to run for say a year or so ,then just breakdown ,what a crap lump of expensive junk i had garmin before that for a few years and even when bits had dropped off it ,it still worked
I have a Tomtom Rider II, cost me £350 and a raw with the wife. I will never EVER by a Tomtom again. I also have a Tomtom One and in both cases have very bad experiences. I've had to dismantle the Rider as the power button got stuck and fix it myself. The Tomtom rider is built with their arses.

So what happens should the battery die? The battery in mine appears to be dead, but I don't know if a replacement battery will get it working again - it won't even start with the charger attached.
You may need to do a hard reset. Open the door on the bottom of the GPS and stick a small wire in the hole next to the power plug. you should feel it hit the reset switch that is behind the hole.

@smidoid I find that when the battery is totally dead you have to leave it plugged in 20 min or so before it will boot, meaning it does not power directly from a plug but rather it draws from the battery so it has to precharge a bit. So if the battery is toast then it makes sense that it would not boot when plugged in.
The security bits you need to open this look like a torx bit with a hole in the center axis. They are listed as :1 of: 32 Locksmith Security Drill Bits on Amazon, You will also need a very small standard torx bit. It looks like you might find a combination set that has both types of bits in it.
The battery is a Samsung icr18650-22 with a 3 wire connector on it.
So, exactly what type of screwdriver bit is actually required to remove the screws on the back on the TomTom Rider? At the same time, what type of battery is used?

Way beyond that I'm afraid bu thanks for the assist.
I've taken it to bits - and the battery is definitely deceased. My Palm has a similar problem - so I'm going t give it a go with a couple of AAs! ;-)

Doesn't really show how to replace the battery, more like how to get the back off (which is a little helpful).

Getting the case open is the hardest part of changing the battery. Once the case is open, the battery is easy to find and replace.
