Do you honestly think student activism is new, or even in a significant high point at the moment?

Student movements have been powerful for at least the last 100 years, and I suspect for much longer (I can imagine students of greek philosophers causing some shit in their day). They're just getting more attention in the US because they are better organised, there is more consensus, the stakes are higher and more non-students are joining in.

Recently I feel the Occupy movement has considerably weakened even though it's grown in size. There are a lot of trivial issues being tackled and it's drawing attention away from the important messages. Who's actually heard about Occupy Wall Street, did that actually change anything yet? Sure, some people talked about it for some time, but for the most part it's fizzled out and the remains are these straggling independent occupy movements protesting things like cardboard fucking boxes. Seriously
