I love Renee Fleming, but I have to say Beverly Sills gave this song a life that I'm not hearing in her voice. However she is singing stunningly as usual!
All this talk of her voice being "too heavy" for this aria is absurd. She adapts her voice very well to the coloratura passages and is a fine Handelian singer. In the 21st Century, must we have little soubrettes as the only singers of Handel?
When Renee recorded this aria her voice was a bit too heavy. If she had recorded it 5 years earlier she could have sounded brighter and more agile. With that said, I still love this recording. Her breath control is really amazing here. Many of the more well noted interpreters of this aria have the rapid fire coloratura that maybe this aria requires, but they rush and the music loses the virtuosity you hear here. A singer who managed to blend fine coloratura and virtuosity is Sutherland.
I love Renee's rendition of this aria. It is an extemely difficult aria and she doesn't omit any parts (as many other sopranos do). For a lyric soprano she has a huge voice! Good work

I actually think Fleming could have done astonishing things in Baroque had she not wasted so much time and so many resources in Bel Canto.
She was an awesome Alcina IMO.

I just love Fleming, regardless of what she sings! Her voice is perhaps a tad heavy for this particular aria, but a good job nontheless.

I love Renée Flemming, but definitely not for baroque repertoire. Try Sandrine Piau
