Actually, there are ways to confuse the target system so that NETSTAT will either 1) Display no information, or 2) Display so much information that picking out the intruder would be difficult.

Only way to truly beat a hacker: Unplug your system from power and Ethernet jack.

This is not a hack, it just shows the connections that your pc has made to other systems. Use netstat -b for the applications associated with the connections made and any app looks suspicious then investigate further.

Run bittorrent, connect to something with 10,000+ leechers, set your max connection limits (in the settings of utorrent or whatever you use) to a really big number and watch the cmd line fly by at warp speed. FUN for the whole family!

Nothing to it - Click "Tools" in the menu bar at the top of Internet Explorer, then "Internet Options" on the bottom of the menu. An Internet Options Window opens & you click on the "Privacy" Tab, then just click or drag the Settings slide-bar to the top. "Block All Cookies" will display on the right side (Medium-High is the norm), click "Apply". You'll need to re-load the website page you're on, click a link on that page or exit & re-start your browser for the new setting to take effect. (cont)

Once you're done with your browser for the time being. Run Lavasoft's Ad-aware to "Remove All". Follow Ad-aware's instructions to set your "TAI" to "3". The TAI setting of 3 may be standard now, mine was from a previous version...

Anti-virus ware I suggest is Avast, it's free & blocks deposit onto your computer. McAfee & Symantec only just figured out their own long-standing stupidity. I'd stay away from Spybot (my other suggestion) for now, they changed & ruined their software this year.
