  • He doesn't just say, "...you're out of your mind." He says "You're Out. Of. Your. Mind." Love it! Interesting use of Zimmer's music, too, thanks.

  • Most forced metaphor in West Wing history.

  • Nice adding background music. What is it?

  • @jiveturkey25 It's from Hans Zimmer's compositions for the movie Gladiator.

  • Logically prove that a deity doesn't exist or quit calling a belief in a deity illogical.

  • when it costs us nothing, we give up nothing, you're out of your mind

  • what's with the hans zimmer track?

  • My ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the sea. May the Force be with you.

  • Nobody knows if God is real or not, so stop trying to crush other peoples beliefs, no matter how wrong they sound to you.

  • I know. There's not the tiniest chance that the nonsense you pretend to believe is true. Your god is just as silly as all the other gods that mankind has thought up.

And I'm not looking to crush you.

    I'm trying to help you.

  • @Oceanus57 You're not trying to help anything. You're trying to prove that you're superior to other to stroke your ego.

  • @CommentorX Gosh, you know me so well. Priceless analysis. My life is so different now! The colours! The sounds! It's all so beautiful! I can't thank you enough for this extraordinary, insightful revelation!

Or - maybe YOU are the one trying to prove you're superior to stroke YOUR own ego. Wow. That makes exactly as much sense, doesn't it? Or possibly more, because people always accuse others of the thing they are most guilty of themselves. Don'tcha find?

  • @thelastinsane As soon as everyone in your camp stops preaching. Making a statement is not trying to "crush" other people's beliefs. You're calling it "crushing" because it happens to be about something you believe if. If he was trying to discourage people from Satanism, you'd be all for it. Try a be a little less dramatic, this is YouTube, not a pogrom banning religious faith.

  • is this a reference from one of the spin doctor songs, I've not seen this movie i like the concept just curious about the reference to the spin doctors

  • Additionally, we have the charitable contributions of various religious groups, which lend aid to the disenfranchized to the tune of several billion dollars annually, done for no other reason than suffering is considered abhorrent and charity is a virtue preached by every mainstream religion in the Eastern and Western World.

  • Lastly, the idea that religion is founded on lies. I believe you mean to say scripture is so founded. Scripture relates historical events, within an historical context, and metaphorical tales to reinforce principles. Yes, they are not accurate, and in some cases fabricated, but not necessarily to deceive. If people choose to take such things literally, then the fault lies with the individual for not taking a more critical approach as many mainstream believers and theological scholars have.

  • Finally, Religion is based, rather than on lies, is based on principles which I think you'll agree are valid, since you've espoused the view of the Secular Humanist. Principles such as charity, temperence, justice, patience, humility and dilligence. These are espoused by every major religion as well as most secular schools of thought.

I apologize for cluttering the inbox, but I felt it necessary to give a rational dissenting view, in virtue of a free exchange of ideas. No offense meant.

  • No, religion is based on ideas which are utterly false. In search of supporters, it affects to represent the fundamental values of decency that are in fact innate in all intelligent species.

Religion hi-jacks them and tries to approppriate the kudos for them.

But the kudos belongs to something far more amazing than the grubby ideas that ignorant and fearful human beings scraped together 2000 years ago.

  • Hideous reasoning. God of the gaps. It's true until it's proved to be rubbish, then it's metaphorical. Being satisfied with bad explanations diminishes us.

Defending and promoting those bad explanations and attacking people whose only desire is to know and understand the truth is evil.

  • Charity is a component of the exercise of power. It isn't inherently good.

All religious charity groups seek to promote the religion that's providing the charity. It's not done merely for its own sake.

  • we also have religious leaders hampering the strive for medical advancement, there religion being used as a battering ram that destroyed aids relief effort and oh yeah bigots and homophobes that beat and kill innocent people simply because there different. all because of religion.

secular charities can do everything a religious charity can do...except hurt people because of an unfounded belief.

besides ALL of that....what does 'it has done good!' have to do with 'it is likely to be TRUE?'

  • RIP Ron Silver :(

  • I'm so sad. RIP Ron, may your eternal sail be on a quiet seal and without any kelp.

  • why is it religion slowing everything down?

  • Because religion sucks us back a thousand years and prevents us from establishing a new and more meaningful philosophy that everyone can subscribe to, based on what we can all agree on.

Religion paves the way for endless misery, pain, division, bloodshed, torture and war.

And it's all founded on a bunch of ludicrous lies.

Mankind would benefit hugely from getting over it.

  • Good luck with that belief. I believe you are wrong - and wish you well.

  • I know I'm going to regret this - honestly, I just wanted to watch some West Wing - but I can't - much to my chagrin - resist picking up the gauntlet.

First, the assumption that religion's absence will mean an absence or even a lessening of "misery...torture and war", which - given the struggles over more tangible things such as land, money, power, etc - I find to be patently false. We don't need an excuse to kill, discriminate, etc.

  • I'm not suggesting it's a solution to mankind's self imposed problems.

I'm suggesting that the truth is more spiritually satisfying than a lot of beserk lies, and that if we can learn to accept the truth, things might change.

  • the thing on the end was stolen from dr king who said, we may have come in different ships, but we're all in the same boat now.

  • Well, actually, the thing on the end was a continuation of the analogy set out by Bruno. I'd never heard the King quote before, but I'm proud to discover that we think alike.

  • Cool analogy. Something is stuck on the hull of mankind. Religion. Serious slowing down of the ship of man. I would liken religion to a hull covered in barnacles with severe drag. Barnacles are very difficult to remove. But with some time and tenacity, even barnacles can be removed. Let reason reign. Let religion fail and sink to the bottom where all fantasy resides. Let the fairytale stop.

  • ummmm, what is the thing on the end? are we having a great plauge of supernatrual beings that I need to watch out for?

  • No, not really, but we've had a plague of belief in supernatural beings being supermiposed on public policy for at least the last 25 or 30 years.

  • The point is this: Belief in God and the impact of that on policy is slowing down human progress. If you think that's a bad thing, wherever you see belief in god slowing us down, try and do something to stop it happening.

  • Great message! What movie is that?

  • Wow these two guys sure did age to the final episode
