how do you get your chickens to come back. i have 7 rhode island red hens and i'm afraid to set them free on my land. I'm afraid they will run away! Also, how do you get your roosters not to attack you?
@AiritonColton11 Well some roosters are mean and others aren't. Chickens just naturally come back to their home to roost. Open the door and let them run and they are back in before dark.
@3064boy yeah the buckey nest idea is great !!! and i just had quick idea with my wife that might even improve on it :) instead of unscrewing them to clean them, u can actually use the screwed in one for stability and insert rossting ones inside of them to easily pull out for cleaning. we just moved to a very rural area in SE Kansas and should be raising chickens very soon.
hello i only want one or two chickens and i was wondering if i let them out of their coop for a couple of hours would my yard be crapped on all over the place???
I need to ask someone with chickens about this. I want to build a coop on my property but my boyfriend doesn't want one on it cuz he thinks chickens are messy and smelly. Do you have issues with odor and messes in your coop? They look very easy to care for to me. Enjoyed the video by the way! Great idea to use those rubber tubs under their perches to catch the poo.
@paperpusher75 Putting pine shavings on the floor of the coop helps a lot. And it depends on how many chickens you have. If you are only going to have a few for eggs you will never notice the smell. If you have a lot of chickens you may need to clean the coop more often. If you live in the country you can let them run free and they will leave most of their mess in the woods. I have had up to 30 at a time and there really isn't much odor from them if you keep the coop clean. Hope that helps!
Yes, if you have any kind of scavengers in your area like fox, raccoon, dogs, birds of prey, even skunks! The most dangerous times are around sundown and during the night. I have had free-range chickens for twenty years, and have always had a coop with a door that is fastened shut each evening. Chickens will go in to roost each night, without prodding. The coop also has a 'run' attached to it so that they have room to move around - don't want them picking on each other.
@chazfensk I have 40 chickens, 37 hens and 3 roosters!!!!! ITS SO FREAKING LOUD OUTSIDE! haha! They don't stink much unless you don't clean the coop. Also poultry protection is TOP PRIORITY!!!! I will maybe post a video on my chicken coop after the chicks are grown up and in the coop and the coop is all clean. Also some beginners might not know.... Let the chickens out in the day, and they go back into their house at night if they have enough perches. :)
i live in alabama the lowest it will get is like 40 or 30 for no more than an hour in the winter in deep night. most of the time in winter its like 60, and in summer it can get to 90-120 will they be ok in that weather
@willfeldon I am not sure what they would have. Do a little research online and maybe you will find something. You can put antibiotics in the water depending on what it is they have. A lot of people say bad things about antibiotics but they have a purpose too. If it is used to treat an illness that is fine. It is the routine use in chicken factories that is harmful. Also if it is viral antibiotics will not do anything. I read somewhere that chickens can get colds too. Hard to say what it is.
@willfeldon Well right now I have 21. This video was made about a year and a half ago so there has been some changes to our chicken population. I have Rhode Island Reds, Araucana,, Barred Rocks, Marans and some that are just mixed breeds. Also some bantum mixed breeds too. They are fun and very easy. All you really have to manage is cleanliness, chicken safety and a place for the eggs. Otherwise chickens pretty much take care of themselves!
@willfeldon Plywood is fine. We don't have too many problems with predators getting in the coop. We have hawks and foxes but they only really cause problems when the chickens are outside. You could use inexpensive wood to build it and then line the bottom and lower parts of the walls with sheet metal if things were chewing through and bothering the chickens. Also you could just get an old tin shed and use that. Chickens are not picky and easy to raise!
@willfeldon Pretty much just have a place you can close up at night to keep anything out. Something with solid wood walls will work. If you have a lot of predators where you are then maybe some sheet metal to keep weasels or other rodents from chewing through.

I'm hoping to keep chickens soon, so you've given me a taster of what it could be like. Mine won't have such a large space though - yours have a veritable palace! I think I'll be getting all females, which will mean hopefully a quieter coop, which is a consideration I have to make as here in the UK, my neighbours are much closer than yours. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it. Love the nesting boxes bit too.
I have a rhode island red and an arcana, too, and I don't have nearly as big of a coop as you, because I only have 2 chickens. it is a little 8 Ft by 3 Ft house with a hen house where they lay eggs and roost.

I love your use of the 5gal bucket as a nesting box, Building my own coop now and going to use them instead of buying them.. Thanks alot for the Ideas...
@marafi I shoot them. At night they are all locked in so it isn't a problem. During the day anything can happen. But for the most part I haven't lost too many, but it happens now and then.
i have two silkies that i keep in my room because i dnt have a coop. ive had em for 5 months and they are 7 or 8 months now, but she doesnt lay, i dnt know if its because theyre in my room or she isnt ready yet, can someone help me. and what age would she start. thank you!
Be sure the chicks and chickens have plenty of water and a safe place to roost at night. They really are very simple and forgiving birds. If you read some of the information out there you would think that you are designing a rocket ship the way some people talk. The fact is you could have an old pickup cab for a coop and they would be happy with it. The only other thing I can tell you is that you don't want more than one rooster or they will get really hard on the hens.
@bobinmissouri I agree. Times are hard and they are just going to get worse in my opinion. I hope I'm wrong! But it is better to be prepared just in case:)
That's awesome! I have videos on my chickens too. Thats my problem. I have to many roosters and They are the ones that are closest to me..
..I need more hens...The roosters are tearing the feathers off the back of my best laying hens!! Any advise??? Get more hens or make jackets?? hahahah LOL.....rick.
The floor is sawdust which I change out every so often. I normally have a screen over the buckets to keep the chickens out of it but it was off in this video for whatever reason. And yes, if it gets left too long it will get maggots. But this was filmed in the middle of winter so there are no insects to worry about that time of year here in minnesota. Thanks for the comment.
They are just 5 gallon pails screwed into the wall and the tops cut in half. A couple bucks at the store or if you look around you should be able to find free ones. They are pretty common.
Considering starting a coup. I notice that you have less nesting boxes than hens. Can you give me an idea please as to how many hens could use the same nesting box?

Thanks for the info, Do you heat the shed ? I am in Utah and am getting ready to get a few hens was wondering if I needed to use a heat lamp in the hen house ?
You shouldn't need much heat unless your rooster has a tall comb. It got down to -32F here in Minnesota last winter and tips of our roosters combs froze. Our hens didn't have any trouble. I would put a heat lamp where they roost and if it gets much below -10F I would turn it on.
I love your idea for the nest boxes. I'm looking to build an actual coop soon for my growing flock. I'm not much of a builder..so at least it's one less thing to build.
Hey I got a couple of good ideas from your setup! I like the "Crap catching totes" under the perch...and the bucket nesting boxes are a good idea too! I cracked up at those mischevous Roosters. Mine are the same way. lol!
I have 9 chickies. I live in Albany NY and I have 3 Orpintins 3 Plymoth Rocks and 3 Jersey Reds. Only Female. Because my mom said that rosters are mean. By the way. I have a question. Did all your chickens survived the winter? And do you have any chicken hawks like us? Did any of them die? if so, tell me how (: Thanks
Looks about perfect for what I want to do on our 2 acres, though I probly wont build it out of cedar, or whatever that nice wood its made out of is lol
Ya real nice, thems some happy chickens in the summer I bet
Definitely gonna use the nesting box idea.I'm a city fella...but I'm thinking of doing chickens in my backyard.I don't see any videos on proper cleaning & processing for food . How do you do that? Is that something you do?
Mine is like 20x20 right now. I used to just let them run where ever but they were getting a little too far from home. They don't need a lot of space but really the more space you can give them the better!
Cool chickens

Chickens are not picky. They will love whatever you build!

Hey I got a couple of good ideas from your setup! I like the "Crap catching totes" under the perch...and the bucket nesting boxes are a good idea too! I cracked up at those mischevous Roosters. Mine are the same way. lol!

don't you put a light bulb in for really Cold days?
walls0stone 2 years ago
what are the spots on your rooster's comb? Is that frostbite, Marek's disease or something else?
plasticjesus108 2 years ago
That was a little bit of frostbite. Insulated the coop but once we got down to -32 F it still got a little too cold inside for them.

I watched about 15 chicken coop video's and Yours was the best!
I love the chicken noises! FUNNY!!!
I can't wait to show this to my husband!
Our chickens peck at our rings too! - This made me laugh, I didn't know that was normal, we just thought it was our chickens.
Have an EGG-cellent Day!

Definitely gonna use the nesting box idea.I'm a city fella...but I'm thinking of doing chickens in my backyard.I don't see any videos on proper cleaning & processing for food . How do you do that? Is that something you do?
FIGHTSEEN 2 years ago
Are you talking about butchering chickens? There are quite a few videos on youtube that show butchering techniques.

I only have 3 chickens and i would love more but my garden isnt that big, but they are addictive....
CaseyChaosx 2 years ago
Ya, I would like to get some more varieties but there is only so much room. :)
chazfensk 2 years ago
Nice setup! Great idea for the boxes. How large is the fenced yard for that number of birds?
pckennel 2 years ago
Mine is like 20x20 right now. I used to just let them run where ever but they were getting a little too far from home. They don't need a lot of space but really the more space you can give them the better!
