Since you're focussing on Canada, there are literally thousands of news articles of the Canadian goverment asking the Sinhala goverment for ceasefire and a POLITICAL SOLUTION to the ethnic issue- NOT directly supporting a military solution. Again the Western goverments would not have had an issue with the Sri Lankan regime if they respected rules of warefare and humanitarian laws. You cannot target civilians and expect support from democratic governments.

Everything you just stated lacks factual background. The Sri Lankan Government has the full support of democratic countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and India to fight terrorism. I live in Canada and we know that not even Al Qaeda has managed to murder two different heads of State as the LTTE have. It is these countries that have been urging the LTTE to surrender for the greater good of civilians.

The Canadian government has given it's full support to Sri Lanka's war on terror because they know the brutalities of their opposition. The general concensus amongst non-partisans in this country is that the LTTE is using civilians as human shields; evidence and historical fact support this.

1. directly target civilians- one hospital hit 9 times in 4 days, forced dissaperances in nonconflict regions

2. supress freedom of speech/media freedom for ALL sri lankans - look up Lasantha Wickramatunga, etc.

3. Threaten international diplomats and internatinal news media personnel

You must have a PHD in being factually wrong; there is no evidence to any of these claims. However, what is a fact is that the LTTE has a history of using civilians as human shields, which is what they are doing as we speak. Tamils in Canada have been furious at Prime Minister Stephan Harper for placing the LTTE on the terror list in 2006. The Canadian government has been relentless in its denouncement of the LTTE and their atrocities, much to the dismay of the 300,000 Tamils in Canada.

This conflict has been going on since 1983, so your argument that sanctions/embargos will be coming doesnt hold water. If anything these countries will give the Sri Lankan government extra leeway considering the sheer brutality of the opposition its facing. Canada has called for a political solution and so has the Sri Lankan govt, but only under the condition that the LTTE lay down its weapons which they will never do. Canadas Security Minister Stockwell Day many times supported the SL govt.

I have been to Colombo many times. I have seen many Tamils who live there prosper, get good jobs and education even marry Singhalese people and they have no thirst for war. This war goes on only because division is needed for the LTTE leadership to thrive. This is why a great Tamil mayor of Jaffna was murdered in 1975 by the LTTE. It is why Tamil MPs willing to find common ground with the Sri Lankan government have been blown up into bits and pieces by the LTTE vermin
