They stopped because neither of them wanted the fight.

The octopus didnt realise the moray's lair was there. And the eel was defending itself.

The octopus grabs hold of the moray and tries to squeeze it to death!? Then the moray ties a knot in itself to get the octopus off, leaving with one of its limbs as a trophy.

The octopus could easily grow another one though.
