this relationship gives them an eternal joy, love, a desire to serve- which is why I said before all genuine christians are great people. a christian could never abandon his true beliefs because God is so concrete to them. the relationship with God is as real and true to them as anything else on earth.
while the rules and stories of the bible provide guidance and important information to believers, these things are not the cornerstones of their faith. their love of God and His creation is.
this is why someone who is truly a christian can't un-become a christian. one can't end a relationship with God. what you gave up was what you were unfortunately falsely taught was christianity. the man-made religious aspect, not the spiritual aspect, for it was never present (not your fault)"christian" is a manmade term.
someone who thanks God for His sacrifice and creates a serving, loving relationship with God is a real "christian." it's simple.
does this mean they don't do bad things? no, we're all human. we all screw up, but they don't do bad things for the sake of doing bad things, just like they don't become a christian for the sake of getting to heaven. they become "christians" to serve/please God, getting to heaven is a reward.
KEY point:
christianity is a relationship with God, not a religion. the bible doesn't talk about religion. religion is man made. it is only considered religion because it requires belief in a divine being.
christians don't hate. when jesus lived, he associated with outcasts in order to show that no person was to ever be excluded.
actions don't affect whether or not you will go to heaven. "so does this mean you can go out and do whatever horrible things you want and as long as you're a christian you go to heaven?"
no, because someone who is truly a christian doesn't have the desire to use relationship with God as a pass to "sin." christians don't have the goal of living for empty pleasure.
I can help. right now, I'm not 100% sure if I'm actually a christian (weird, I know) but I can definitely give you insight.
all genuine christians are great people. they have compassion for everyone.
there are horrible, hateful, bigoted people out there who honestly believe they are christians, but what they believe to be christianity is very different from what it really is. christians hate to be grouped in with these people. jesus' message was one of tolerance, love, peace and inclusion.
Hey MC, I will help in any way possible, however it is difficult to know exactly what you are looking for without the details of the play. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss details you do not want public.
For starters, I would highly recommend you review the Battlestar Galactia series by Ron Moore over the 4 years of that show there were four main viewpoints, Monotheists (Cylon) Polytheists (human) Atheist (some of both like early Baltar, Adama, and Cabal) and fundamentalists (some of both like Late Baltar Starbuck, and #6) NONE of these viewpoints felt like stereotypes or jokes, and all had points in which they were right.
I'd include the varying motivations behind the different types of theists. There are of course the bigots, there's the ignorant ones that just believe what they were told, the intellectual apologiests, and those who generally just want to save people from hell. Motivation I feel would be important in character development here especially.
The term "believers" is mis-leading in a sence. WE are all believers in something. If you mean the Judeo-Christian God...that too is an individual thing. For instance there are Christians who don't deny the truth of evolution. Everything is in degrees. Are you looking for moderate Christians? Or are you looking for extremist young earth creationists?
ps: christians don't hate science

You cannot parody a creationist. Make the character as whacky as you like and you'll find somebody who's even more whacked.

Good to hear that everything well with your surgery.
There are many ways of creating these characters. Here's how I would approach it.
1. Make a rough draft of the script with the characters as you initially perceive them.
2. Join a "believers" message board and ask the questions or say the things that the protagonists of your rough draft script say.
3. Evaluate the actual responses you get and adjust your script accordingly.
4. Repeat until you are satisfied.
