@MsBangora they are clapping because the test went as planned. The engine did not destroy itself and the blade did not exit the engine thru the sides (where the passengers / rest of the aircraft is)
I wonder how this blade off test compares to a a real life situation of a large bird strike. Would a bird strike potentially cause several blades to be knocked off at once thereby releasing much more energy the engine shroud would have to absorb...?
@panther105 The standards on the fan shroud are VERY rigid. In actuality the fan shroud has to contain the blades under all circumstances, even blade failure from hail ingestion.
an engine over rpm is an engine destinated to fail..but RR engines are appropiate for aircraft like B747-400/8-i & A380 this is a big test for the general safety of these aircraft
@hasenpfote272 A modern plane fly with just one of it's engines running. As long as the blade doesn't escape the engine they pilots should be able to land the plane safely.
no large "lumps" aye? what about SMALL ones. consider a 22 caliber bullet. how about the excessive vibration of an engine violently dissembling in the air?
I thought Qantas had a similar accident when a blade ripped off shortly after take-off from Singapore and the shrapnel from the blade fell out of the engine and onto some island.
etbadaboum, you are the perfect example of people who completely ignore the fact that others may have different viewpoints.
To repeat; what did we see? Did we see a decent shot, even just, a few seconds at least, of the effect the blade had, which was the whole point of the exercise?
No.
I blame it on the inability for film editors to think people can actually survive a shot that lasts more than one second.
Your comment was irrelevant. I mean, 'transparent society'??? WTF??
I wonder if the radiator fan blades in their cars are tested in the same way, it would be disastrous if one of them failed and flew out of the bonnet along the motorway.
@paulthew2 you are the perfect example of the kind of people who doubt about absolutely everything even if the perfect proof is shown right to you on Internet. Transparency society is only limited by people's minds to trsust and judge.
At 4:40 it says "Blade off testing is normally top secret. But for the first time Rolls Royce has released this footage." When will releases of failed tests by Rolls Royce follow?
@cimbomlovr1 Its just the frame rate of the camera. The blade is spinning slightly slower than the camera's framerate. ie. If the cameras frame rate is 60fps, it might only be doing 55-58 rotations per second,
No it didn't. There was a small oil leak which caused a fire but it was contained and no hydraulics were damaged. The engine nacelle was intact on landing. Please get your facts right before you make crass statements.
@sharand24 The fact is that the damage to the wing and to the nacelle was far beyond what was supposed to be acceptable... that's the irony of this Video... the Fan blade in the Qantas incident WAS NOT CONTAINED.
@Juaakili No irony. The Quantas incident was caused by a turbine disc, not a fan blade. They're totally different components. There's no containment system required for the failure of a turbine disc or turbine blades by EASA or the FAA. No engine manufacturer in the world has an HP or IP turbine containment system for an aerospace engine - it's too heavy. These parts are critically controlled at manufacture. The Quantas engine had a defect from manufacture. GE and Pratt have had incidents too.
@sharand24 Released today, the report highlights how the intermediate pressure turbine disc in the aircraft's No. 2 engine had been weakened by an oil fire. As a result, the disc separated from its shaft, increased its rotation speed and broke into several parts. Sections of the fractured disc and other engine components penetrated the aircraft's left wing and a number of other areas on the aircraft, resulting in significant structural and systems damage.
@sharand24 An interim ATSB investigation report has confirmed the sequence of events that led to the 4 November 2010 uncontained engine failure on board a Qantas A380 aircraft over Batam Island, Indonesia.
Lol these engines look like they're made by ghosts whom are aslo kung fu masters, tai chi experts and can do calculus whilst filing their nails, oh and have lived 1,000 lifetimes before. You wouldn't ever believe people could make something like this, I guess this is as close to equalling God as people will ever get?
@addernoir01 There is no god. Regardless, we've already surpassed your deranged concept of a nonexistent deity. While you claim your imaginary guy in the sky murders millions, we are saving them for real.
I am an Engineer, and very proud of my fellows in other disciplines of engineering - as demonstrated here! We take pure science and turn it into something humanity uses for the purpose of improving lives.
My only regret is that there aren't that many of us around to help speed up the the process, that is, turning pure science into engineered technology. With more engineers, the bigger the pool, for humanity to unleash its creativity on concepts we presently to imagine to impossible/fiction.
@ndugumuzana Yea seriously, especially because all the american engineering has bent sent to china. There is pretty much no future left in aerospace in my country. What countries even have their own engineering?
@ndugumuzana There are plenty of hungry engineers/engineering graduates in the United States desperate for a job these days. The world doesn't need more engineers floating around the job market.
Improving humanity? I guess you haven't heard the joke about the difference between a Mechanical and a Civil Engineer. One design WEAPONS, the other design TARGETS. Guess what sends a tomahawk cruise missiles to its target? A turbofan engine
@ndugumuzana I know your regret and I feel the pain it took to push each letter in your second paragraph. These days there are more arm chair engineers than real ones. What you have seen as a degradation of the numbers of engineers today, especially aeronautic, is due to the education system. In my time, in high school, I worked on a P&W R1830 and learned to listen for squealer tips. That's why till this day, my heart is a piston and there's Jet A in my veins.
I had the same thought. They were really lucky that the weak design of the Rolls-Royce engines on the Quantas A380 didn't kill them all. Pieces from the exploded engine damaged the wing heavily. They were just lucky that no fuel tank exploded due to this. So much to the containment of these Rolls-Royce engines. What went wrong during the design of these engines that nearly killed so many peoples?
I dunno if GE did engine blow test but they did a torture test on it, involving tripple red line, spray it with tons of water hope to drown it, ice it while keep it running
Well the on the qantas flight the engine didnt contain the shrapnel when the oil line failed and it badly damaged the wing, nearly bought down an A380.Design elements outsourced to India perhaps
if there wasn´t dumb people , nobody would like to do some kind of jobs, so, they are necessary, pop singers are there for them, to keep them happy with simple stuff, because they are simple people. Not all of us can be engineers, architects or doctors, who would clean the sewers?????? or dig , or construct, or clean up dog shit
These people are brillant. This woman is brilliant and nobody knows her. But we adore pop singers, sport celebrities, actors or even "celebrities" with no talent now... if the human society was made of wise people we would adore these kind of person that make our technology always better and not the kind of person that entertain us.
@Alltimeboxing thats no women she is a man ,.talk about pussies the are in a building 200 yards when you fly in a A380 you dont sit 200 yards away from the exploding engine , put them on the coal face and they might then come up with some better safety features .
@IainThePro well we all do when we fly in coach class or cattle class MATE . come and sit in my house when we had the 6.3 earth Quake which has Fuck Christchurch MATE
@TheBedfordboyz I think you mistook my light hearted comment, you're obviously quite a self concious and angry person to snap like that. Anyhoo, when we're on the aircraft we're protected by the fuselage which is also impact tested and of course this test should ensure that no shrapnel exits the engine casing anyway. What better safety features would you suggest, as you seem to be the aeronautical expert?
@TheBedfordboyz they sure as hell didnt then because they didnt know what would happen -- thats why its called a test. have them do it now that they know the results and im sure they will
@Alltimeboxing I dont get your point?? I am sure I wont enjoy seeing her dancing, to me shes ugly. I am sure I wont enjoy listen her singing - to me her voice is squicky. But I dont give more credit to dancers or singers than to her work. Perhaps you do. If you fly 4 times a week, you do so. I fly once a year but watch TV and listen music every day. Open your eyes dude, wake up, not everyone is like you and cherish whetever the FCUK you do.
@Alltimeboxing Well said mate, what can you say, there are some of us still out there. but yes all the people to have come before us have always respected their experts not so much today, we are all blinded by vanity.
@sicmaggoter the society is currently made of dumb people but still we adore dumb people (Paris Hilton, Jackass, sport celebrities, pop singers)... ever thought of that ?
seriously, who got a poster of Bill Gates in his room ? ...
@Alltimeboxing I think Dr. Hillary Barton does pretty well, she has clearly reached the apex of her profession. The people who should know her, do know her. More daunting by far is the process by which she has attained her position.
@Alltimeboxing come to my country, its a lot worse, not only smart people are not known they are given a really bad stereotypical treatment, from tv to movie portrayals and even bad treatment in real life and its like be one of the ff:
@Alltimeboxing : Agree with you completely . An engineer's job is often thankless and also not a big deal in the eyes of people ! They don't realize that because of engineers the world is a better place to live in :-)
Human society 'appreciates' scientists just fine. They get paid to invent cool things that make the world better. Are there a lot of scientists that would rather have paparazi following them around instead of just working? I doubt it.
@kyleh thats not my point. I just think we pay too much attention to useless people like Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie. Seriously, we must be dumb to pay attention to useless ppl like that, whereas other people like those in the video are way more useful to our society and our species. We prefer a porn buzz on the internet than a great discover in technology. Do you realize how dumb it is ?
Human society 'appreciates' scientists just fine. They get paid to invent cool things that make the world better. Are there a lot of scientists that would rather have paparazzi following them around instead of just working? I doubt it.
@Alltimeboxing Entertainment isn't made of paris hiltons, it's made of George Carlins. Adoring anyone is just wrong. You are only supposed to adore gods, and there are no gods. Of course, you can admire people, and I do admire many scientists, just as I admire many comedians, actors or musicians. A Jimmy Hendrix is no less important than a Nikola Tesla. We all contribute to society. Not all musicians are shitty like justin beaver, just like not all engineers are crap like bill gates.
@callmeshane303 the reason they dont contain the high pressure turbine is because it is has so much energy at high speed its impossible to contain the plane would be just too heavy. Plus its very very rare they fail, its normally the fan blades on the front that can be contained that fail and thats because there at the front and have to take the grunt of whatever is going into the engine. So it doesn't really matter the SOLID metal disc isn't contained.
9 million? try 30million. I was on the shop floor when they announced this.

This A380 wasn't powered by this engine... the A380 is compatible with few different engines..

How can it go well if your intension is to destroy the engine?

These people are brillant. This woman is brilliant and nobody knows her. But we adore pop singers, sport celebrities, actors or even "celebrities" with no talent now... if the human society was made of wise people we would adore these kind of person that make our technology always better and not the kind of person that entertain us.

@Alltimeboxing thats no women she is a man ,.talk about pussies the are in a building 200 yards when you fly in a A380 you dont sit 200 yards away from the exploding engine , put them on the coal face and they might then come up with some better safety features .
TheBedfordboyz 11 months ago
@TheBedfordboyz you fancy sitting next to it mate?
IainThePro 11 months ago
@IainThePro well we all do when we fly in coach class or cattle class MATE . come and sit in my house when we had the 6.3 earth Quake which has Fuck Christchurch MATE
TheBedfordboyz 11 months ago
@TheBedfordboyz I think you mistook my light hearted comment, you're obviously quite a self concious and angry person to snap like that. Anyhoo, when we're on the aircraft we're protected by the fuselage which is also impact tested and of course this test should ensure that no shrapnel exits the engine casing anyway. What better safety features would you suggest, as you seem to be the aeronautical expert?
IainThePro 11 months ago
@TheBedfordboyz they sure as hell didnt then because they didnt know what would happen -- thats why its called a test. have them do it now that they know the results and im sure they will

@Alltimeboxing soo true, look at even the introduction aerospace engineering problems...

@Alltimeboxing entertainm, ent is as much a part of us as any of our tecnoligy. It is not stupid. I preform exsperaments to music ^_^

@Alltimeboxing If the society was made of wise people, then wise ppl would be something common,so u would still not adore them. ^^
Ever thought of that?
sicmaggoter 10 months ago
@sicmaggoter the society is currently made of dumb people but still we adore dumb people (Paris Hilton, Jackass, sport celebrities, pop singers)... ever thought of that ?
seriously, who got a poster of Bill Gates in his room ? ...
Alltimeboxing 10 months ago
@Alltimeboxing Nobody, because Gates is a bastard business man who has contributed nothing to the industry and has held us back decades.

@Alltimeboxing I think Dr. Hillary Barton does pretty well, she has clearly reached the apex of her profession. The people who should know her, do know her. More daunting by far is the process by which she has attained her position.

@Alltimeboxing come to my country, its a lot worse, not only smart people are not known they are given a really bad stereotypical treatment, from tv to movie portrayals and even bad treatment in real life and its like be one of the ff:
>politician corrupt i should say
>actress/actor celebrity
>marry rich people

@Alltimeboxing simple fact visit igma.tv, a tv network website look, its all ruled by gay people without any intellectual value. silly.

I doubt it.
kyleh 9 months ago
@kyleh thats not my point. I just think we pay too much attention to useless people like Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie. Seriously, we must be dumb to pay attention to useless ppl like that, whereas other people like those in the video are way more useful to our society and our species. We prefer a porn buzz on the internet than a great discover in technology. Do you realize how dumb it is ?

Speak for yourself, I certainly don't adore them! ;o)
Docv400 9 months ago
@Alltimeboxing Entertainment isn't made of paris hiltons, it's made of George Carlins. Adoring anyone is just wrong. You are only supposed to adore gods, and there are no gods. Of course, you can admire people, and I do admire many scientists, just as I admire many comedians, actors or musicians. A Jimmy Hendrix is no less important than a Nikola Tesla. We all contribute to society. Not all musicians are shitty like justin beaver, just like not all engineers are crap like bill gates.

They're kidding me with that "testing". What about pressure x temperature matrix? Where is worst case analysis?
AntiKnink24 1 year ago
@bbob423 it was parts from the high pressure turbine
the front of the engine was fine
LaveaFirmis 1 year ago
They ONLY have shell containment for the high bypass fan at the front of the engine... Nice, thin walled, hollow blades.....
Not like SOLID metal disks, that blades are mounted in - inside the actual engine.....
"Oh yeah I know a chap who is selling some good cheap oil pumps.... aerospace quality they are Grommit".
callmeshane303 1 year ago
@callmeshane303 the reason they dont contain the high pressure turbine is because it is has so much energy at high speed its impossible to contain the plane would be just too heavy. Plus its very very rare they fail, its normally the fan blades on the front that can be contained that fail and thats because there at the front and have to take the grunt of whatever is going into the engine. So it doesn't really matter the SOLID metal disc isn't contained.
LaveaFirmis 1 year ago
Didn't this same engine fail on the Quantas A380 recently? I think this test was a fluke as in reality it did fail on an actual flight
