It was not meant to be an advertisement for a multicultural South. I would imagine the majority of the United States would support the Dixie states vanishing from the Union. The southeastern region of the USA currently henders all progress and advancements of civilization for the rest of the USA. The region is simply dead weight and non-productive to the continent. With a free market economy (unlike the present US), very low taxes and few regulations, the South would attract the best and the brightest. Should the CSA had stood getting an armistice and then temporary peace, it would have been no more than a decade before a new more mortiferous war had occurred. I don't think Oklahoma was involved in this, and Missouri probably would have lost it's bid for succession as is most parts of Texas and some of Arkansas, the Mississippi River is the true boundary of the South on it's western front and Ohio River on it's north.
Oklahoma wasn't organized during the Civil War; but many of the Native Americans were friendly to the south in the hope that siding with them would put them in a good position after the south presumably won the war.
Missouri and Kentucky are actually interesting cases - they had two governments during the war, one siding with each side. In both cases the whole state was subject to southern attacks, but southern control was limited to the southern parts only and then for not long.

@ralphyboy1, That's just unrealistic, man. France, Spain, the UK, the US, Brasil, etc all had slavery and elminated it. It would have been eliminated in the South as well - and it should have been done peacefully instead of killing half a million people. There were Blacks in the South who were free - lots of them in Charleston, Augusta and other cities. And had the South maintained its independence eventually all Southern Blacks would have been freed.
@ralphyboy1, Actually, from what I've read, freed Blacks were treated better before the 1860's than after it. Reconstruction created very hard feelings and Whites naturally enough resented being disenfranchised and having minority-run gov'ts in their States. So when they re-took power in the 1880's they were harsher than before. This could all have been avoided & slavery could have been peacefully ended. That would have been much better for everyone.

That's not to see that there was equality b/f the law, only that it was better than afterwars in many ways. As far as minority-run gov'ts, I'm referring there to the Reconstruction gov'ts (in all Southern States) in which most Whites were disenfranchised. Freed Blacks and Northern soldiers ran those gov'ts while the majority was not allowed to vote. It was not a good time to be White.
That's just unrealistic. Nowhere else in the world was as economically reliant on slavery as the American south. Nearly 40% of their population consisted of slaves. If the south had won, nobody is sure how long slavery would have persisted in the Confederacy, but it would not have been abolished in the in the near future. Too much money was being made too easily for them (Rich, more influential southerners) to give it up.

Are you suggesting that the south was well on its way or even remotely close to abolishing slavery? They started a war cited issues involving the abolition, containment of slavery and the North's resistance to cooperate with their fugitive slave laws dozens of times as their reasons. The south flipped its shit when it heard that Lincoln had won the election, and they seceded even before he took office because of what he would do to their "right" to keep slaves.

The Confederate military may have surrendered after a long and bitter struggle, and I do not blame them. But remember that the government of the CSA never surrendered, and that the South still retains its right to sovereignty and independence.

im a BIG fan of secession, but how can you advocate a state that is more conservative than the one we have now and still support secession? secession is a classically liberal idea and is inconsistent with conservative ideals. its seems like a better way to orient the discussion of succession is one of economic and cultural self-determination regardless of morality. let local communities make moral decisions.

I am from the "Deep South." I live in southern Alabama, so I think I have a right to say the South was right in their challenge to the federal government. Of course, I don't believe the South was right in its support for the institution of slavery. States governments shouldn't trump national gov't, but the national gov't shouldn't be allowed to dominate every aspect of our lives. This was the underlying cause for the Civil War. I mean, look at the mess our national gov't has dragged us into.

This is a very interesting topic. Since, technically, the Confederacy was a separate nation, the Civil War wasn't a "civil war" at all. A civil war is a conflict between people of a same country. In fact, I've read that the term "Civil War" wasn't initialy applied to the war. Originally, it was the "War Between the States," a much more fitting name.

@TheAmbushes Yeah, we didn't rescind our Confederate constitution, so it's still in effect. All contracts made under duress are null & void. The Confederate states are subjugated, so they are not legally bound by the US constitution, except by force of arms, but the southern states would still be bound under the Confederate constitution. That's 13 state governments & many of those state constitutions were forced to change under the subjugation. It's kind of a legal mess, but it can be fixed.

I don't think Oklahoma was involved in this, and Missouri probably would have lost it's bid for succession as is most parts of Texas and some of Arkansas, the Mississippi River is the true boundary of the South on it's western front and Ohio River on it's north.

Oklahoma wasn't organized during the Civil War; but many of the Native Americans were friendly to the south in the hope that siding with them would put them in a good position after the south presumably won the war.
Missouri and Kentucky are actually interesting cases - they had two governments during the war, one siding with each side. In both cases the whole state was subject to southern attacks, but southern control was limited to the southern parts only and then for not long.

@ralphyboy1, That's just unrealistic, man. France, Spain, the UK, the US, Brasil, etc all had slavery and elminated it. It would have been eliminated in the South as well - and it should have been done peacefully instead of killing half a million people. There were Blacks in the South who were free - lots of them in Charleston, Augusta and other cities. And had the South maintained its independence eventually all Southern Blacks would have been freed.

@ralphyboy1, Actually, from what I've read, freed Blacks were treated better before the 1860's than after it. Reconstruction created very hard feelings and Whites naturally enough resented being disenfranchised and having minority-run gov'ts in their States. So when they re-took power in the 1880's they were harsher than before. This could all have been avoided & slavery could have been peacefully ended. That would have been much better for everyone.

That's not to see that there was equality b/f the law, only that it was better than afterwars in many ways. As far as minority-run gov'ts, I'm referring there to the Reconstruction gov'ts (in all Southern States) in which most Whites were disenfranchised. Freed Blacks and Northern soldiers ran those gov'ts while the majority was not allowed to vote. It was not a good time to be White.

That's just unrealistic. Nowhere else in the world was as economically reliant on slavery as the American south. Nearly 40% of their population consisted of slaves. If the south had won, nobody is sure how long slavery would have persisted in the Confederacy, but it would not have been abolished in the in the near future. Too much money was being made too easily for them (Rich, more influential southerners) to give it up.

im a BIG fan of secession, but how can you advocate a state that is more conservative than the one we have now and still support secession? secession is a classically liberal idea and is inconsistent with conservative ideals. its seems like a better way to orient the discussion of succession is one of economic and cultural self-determination regardless of morality. let local communities make moral decisions.

you would have to realize that back then Lincoln's party was the liberal party by today's standards. as back then the republicans wanted to force change upon the citizen as the democrats today wants to do. all being conservative is to hold on to what one has and to keep traditions as they are and not change them. Conservatives today want to keep what the founding fathers had in place for the government and the people. so secession is just a movement to keep our tradition and our heritage.

I am from the "Deep South." I live in southern Alabama, so I think I have a right to say the South was right in their challenge to the federal government. Of course, I don't believe the South was right in its support for the institution of slavery. States governments shouldn't trump national gov't, but the national gov't shouldn't be allowed to dominate every aspect of our lives. This was the underlying cause for the Civil War. I mean, look at the mess our national gov't has dragged us into.

This is a very interesting topic. Since, technically, the Confederacy was a separate nation, the Civil War wasn't a "civil war" at all. A civil war is a conflict between people of a same country. In fact, I've read that the term "Civil War" wasn't initialy applied to the war. Originally, it was the "War Between the States," a much more fitting name.

or you can try the names either Second American Revolution, or the war for Southern Independence, either way you are right, even though the south was not officially recognized as an independent nation on paper, it did have the support of the British and the french and many more European countries, the British supplied the south with weapons, and even had top European military men come over and help with the training of the confederate army

@TheAmbushes Yeah, we didn't rescind our Confederate constitution, so it's still in effect. All contracts made under duress are null & void. The Confederate states are subjugated, so they are not legally bound by the US constitution, except by force of arms, but the southern states would still be bound under the Confederate constitution. That's 13 state governments & many of those state constitutions were forced to change under the subjugation. It's kind of a legal mess, but it can be fixed.

It's my dream to see the south secede again, it will be the last vestige of what the American Empire really was.....the path we are heading down now has absolutely no preservation of our rights or culture. Oklahoma is on it's way to being a republic, SC is working on the Christian exodus......once we can capture one of the southern states, it will be that much easier to gain the rest
