@devildriver66621 The bore and stroke are 6,7 x 7,5 in / 170 x 190 mm The whole engine has a displacement of 4210 cui / 69 litres. The engine is ideling after startup, at 600 r.p.m. At full throttle it runs at 1800 r.p.m. The locomotive has 15 notches at the controller (US standard is normaly 8)
@wlj92 I took a course at Universal Tech Institute in Phoenix, Joined the Teamsters. then later on went to work for contractors. building Diesel engines, Cummins, detroit, Caterpillar, Deuitz. after 24 yrs then these Big Cats started coming my way. parts are heavy and most of the time yo have to carry cylinder heads to the top of these 793 trucks.. good thing we're doing one hole at a time..Pick a good school and pursue this career, it's rewarding and a lot of whining from ones not trained.
im at caterpiller also ...but u can hear the engine when start up there is knocking .....should make valve lash for all cylinders ...oh an way sent to meeeeeeeeee i will fix it
No, electric starters, two of them, 24V. The numbers marks each sylinder. If ther's a problem ore something, its easier for the mechanics to know what sylinder it is, if they'r marked with numbers. Even numbers on one bank, and odd on the other bank, and a total of 16 sylinders on this engine.
So all it takes is 24 volts for the electric starters to turn the crankshaft? Wow, that really isn't a lot it it? A toy car usually takes 6 volts at the motor.
funny all the ones i work on (i work as a tech for cat) have idle and high idle.they start at idle until the temp gets up and then they rev to high idle.
Just overhauled 2 of these for a car shredder in NH.high hp 2300 each, they run from 5 am to 8 pm every day full load its scary to be next to them when they are working $400000.00 to rebuild them.
Cats are not 2 strokes, only detroits as far as I know. This engine is 100 times better than any dirty, noisy, oil leaking old fuel ($2 a litre by the way) guzzling 2 stroke Jimmy creation. Very reliable and good on fuel for what they are.
Cummins equivalent engine is the QSK60 sounds better than this but I have had very bad experience with them (reliability). Detroits new(er) competion is the Series 4000 DDC. Good old motors in my experience I spose but Id say use more fuel than the 3516.
I work with more than a dozen of these things every day. Yes they are a good motor and yes I have seen the with the rods blown through the side of the block. That one is obviously an electric start (24V) but air starts are avaliable and common. WAAAAYYYY to big for anything other than mining or heavy industrial use, they are not really 'performance engines' there workhorses.
i hate to prove you wrong sir cockinator, but the 5l your talking about is a c15 series, also in cats line up is the c14 as well as the c13 and up to a few years ago the c12. think im wrong? look up the engine option that come in the PERTERBUILT.
WOW We don't have diesel-electrics that small here. They are either hydralic or mechanical drive. The diesel electrics are a lot bigger, and a lot more fun to drive to!
yeah thats true. when you go into the dealership to get a hydraulic hose, they are required to put caps on the ends. i guess a service guy at the dealership by me got in big trouble for not putting caps on a new hydraulic hose.
It's part of their cleanspec procedure and they should also blow a cleaning plug or two through the hose to clean the inside prior to dellivery. they also have to cap/cover old shitty hoses etc.
Wonderful... I just love heavy diesel-engines. I have been helping and working on a Mitsubishi S12R since I was a little boy. That is a V12 engine that you can take out 1600 Bhp.
But I was wondering if you can take a longer video when this Cat is running on idle?
Nah its more so that when your doing a valve set and setting injector heights, etc you don't get confused (working on 16 yellow pots you can sometimes lose where your at) and accidently stuff up, i'm pretty sure our bosss wouldn't like a phone call saying oh sorry dude we legged a motor.
My employer has 3 trucks with 3406-b inline 6's, 1 with a 3408 v-8 and one with a 3412 v12... I really hope he doesn't hear about a v16... or else I'll never get a raise.
that CAT3516 on the video was MEUI one, we have the latest here the 3516C high displacement series at 3150BHP, we can supply you with these engines anytime you want..take care of that 3208, hehe
Thanks for the offer, but me likey my 3208's. =3 100% original from 1986, and they run great. Also, the 3208 is a V8; I don't think the 3516's would fit in my 35-foot boat :O LOL
ehe! sorry! i thought you have some boats there bigger than 35footer..if incase you'll replace it with latest CAT engines you can try our C7 engine only it is 6 inline but has higher power than the 3208 and it is also a fully electronic engine with the ACERT technology. that means it is less on smoke emissions and lower on fuel consumption compared to the mechanical engines..
The company i work for makes the water cooled exhaust manifolds for all CAT 3500's. You can see them on the very top of the engine. We also make the fuel line manifolds and oil and fuel filters. I have been to the plant that makes these engines in Lafayette Indiana and they are massive.
power!
