someone has to describe music for the average listener, or else we'll be in our own elitist containment forever. It is the journalists duty to ask logical questions which can hopefully bring the average listener closer to a definite answer or description of music. Music's meaning is fleeting and Musicians are often contradictory. This is a great interview, and it stirs up many of the emotions I'd like to see out of Ms. Uchida. If they were just in agreement it'd be terribly boring.
what a classy woman! btw, the whole japanese culture is fascinating. I have many japanese friends, and I am always astonished by their discretion and politeness...
@plexihout The transcendent and the religious are not the same. She obviously doesn't believe in god, but I think perhaps anything that lies beyong human explanation could be called transcendent and her unwillingness to even attempt to answer the question 'What was happening that made it such a beautiful thing?' regarding Schubert and her repitition of 'it moves you' makes me think she probably does believe in such things
@adamsrj06 For me it is a clear answer when she says it moves you.
I don´t think she has something with transcendent things, why?
James Randi has a reward of 1 million dollars for the first who can prove there is a supernatural event.Since the start in 1960 no one has succeeded to do that.
@cuoredeinidi I can see that you do care deeply about my "ignorant comments," and it's quite flattering really. That stereotype is not an exclusively European one, nor is it a 16th century one, given that the United States wasn't even an idea until the 18th century.
@cuoredeinidi As I replied to a comment before yours, "I sincerely apologize for getting his nationality mixed up." By the way, I do not apologize for thinking that Americans are uneducated and arrogant, as your vile language has proven it so well.
I agree with all of the comments below, thanks for posting this but as respected as the journalist might be, he's such a pighead, doesn't let you enjoy Uchida's thoughts
Mitsuko Uchida is such a gracious person and an intelligent performer, but the interviewer is such an idiot! I truly hope he reads these posts and tries to behave less stupid in future interviews...
@plexihout I saw the 1hour interview you have linked. And still I feel the interviewer is very rude and asking wrong or silly questions. I can see he is an honest guy but for this interview, he did a very poor job. He should thank Ms. Uchida for her patience. But anyway, thanks for uploading the videos. Those are really something to see. I mean in so many ways....
@hd9xc1k2 I don't agree. I think the journalist is great. Yes, he isn't the sweet-like-honey kind and doesn't fall to his knees in praise. But he is not the typical, uninterested "do-my-job-who-is-next?-How-do-you-speak-her-name-again?" kind of press idiot. He provokes Uchida's thoughts and makes the interview a short, fertile gem. She is a very strong personality, I don't think she gets upset by journalists like him. He is not my favourite. Yet I think he did a good job!
I wish he would let her finish her response instead of constantly interrupting her. Conversely, I wish she would learn when to stop talking about things. She should just answer the question and move on. But she is an emotional woman.
I had the same impression with you (that the interviewer is quite intellectual) until the moment, he took a CD of Schönberg, played it and asked Uchida directly her opinions on what she heard in a few seconds.
If he has had some basic knowledge of music, he won't expect someone (even a great pianist) to say something properly on one piece in such short time. Should be ashamed.
That periodist is such a Dick, Look at the 10:39 with his question madame Uchida got andry He doesnt shows any respect to the most powerful and perfect pianist of our time Miss Uchida
@plexihout she was irritated at that point coz she makes her best effort at the 8th chopin competition and she didn't won but today She got all the succes all the world so thats the reason for her andry = )
@plexihout yeah thats the point = ) whe I practice the clarinet I hate when the people judge me ='( haha but that 'succeeding has nothing to do with working' is coz when She didn't won the price at that chopin competition She did her best effort, and hasn't success, the success comes alone without any effort = ) that's my perspective
@manuelspcool Thanks, that is an interesting perspective and you might be true.
What I am thinking about is the words succeed and succes.I understand it this way that succeed is meant for herself, she could not get it right for herself...the notes.(that is practicing)
That is a different thing then succes for an audience or competition. Then the audience (others) is judging.
I remember that one from you:,succes comes alone without any effort.I like that.:)
@plexihout your point of view is great, one question where did you got this interview? I'm a big fan of Uchida and I would like to get new videos and other questions. where are you from? Tell me, what are your favorite composers, and your favorite performers. =)
@plexihout 'Succeeding has nothing to do with working' - what Uchida says has nothing to do with outside judgement. It means when we are working on a piece of music there is no point at which we "succeed" - we can gain deeper and deeper understanding of the piece and we can get the piece ready for a certain performance, but if it is great music our work will never be 'finished' - there is always more to find.
It was potentially a interesting topic about how even such a great pianist struggled at the beginning.
Whats so disrespectful?
Why is a difficult beginning (with difficult music so how is this demeaning) with something from a inspiring topic turned into a insult. Even if it was in fact a bad question. We now know that pianos skills of miss Uchida are extraordinary.
@manuelspcool On the other hand, i would agree, that the interviewer is an incredibly annoying person with pretty enormously stupid questions. most people at this point in time his age in the west have very little respect for much. the whole culture post 60's is so damned cocky.
but as rubber toe points out, its his annoying questions that stirs he into her wonderful comments , post 10:39 about the music of Schubert. And also this idiocy about lessons, the fucking new age calvinist idiocy .
The interviewer is a stupid. He doesn't let she explains, then why make he the interview? Respect for this big artist, please!!

"Dick" : And you found it extremely difficult. At first hand, you didn't succeed.
Uchida: Succeeding has nothing to do with working. If I went for success, I wouldn't play the piano.
That is the greatest 'annoyed' reply I have ever heard. Go Uchida!!
