Um.. you didn't touch down late. If you look at aerial pictures of the runway at Toncontin, you'll see that there are arrows on about 1/3 of the runway. That's for takeoff only.
And what's up with the quotes around International? You do realise that any airport that has the facilities to accept international flights is considered to be an Int'l airport? Size has nothing to do with it.
This was real.. We had a little air hold us off the run way at just the wrong moment .. It's a very short runway for that . If you play it again look at the stripes on the runway and the big white rectangle . Thats where the wheels are meant to touch down and then notice how much more time before we got traction .. My first flight in here I noticed the Stewardess crossing herself as we followed the maintain down to the runway .. Mr business partner was doing this vedio with his cell phone .
Nice bit of raw footage - the slow frame rate makes it feel like one of those jumpy news reports from somewhere really dangerous. Maybe Toncontin is one of those places!
poor frame per seconds, can't be more that 2 per sec... very poor camera quality. but you filmed it pretty good with what you had. you could'nt have done it better with the peace of crap camera you got there
Although the it landed about 1600ft from the threshhold, the 757 is capable of braking in less than 3600ft. Considering the airplane is pretty low in weight, although it isn't touching the ground, the plane is already loosing airspeed because the engines are on idle as it flares. The 757 specification manual requires about 4500ft for landing at Toncontin, the manual DOES include an extra buffer for error. I wouldn't be surprized if the pilots reported 'hot brakes' upon reaching the terminal!

no more Toncontin landings...these videos will become collectors items, just like Kai Tak, officially closed by executive decision to aircraft bigger than 40 passengers, sad but long overdue, I guess it took a tragedy like TACA's to make it happen, "tombstone technology" at it's best!
It's because the airport is at the bottom of a narrow valley, totally surrounded by very steep mountains and by the city itself. This video doesn't show (check others, they are great) but on the opposite windows, you can only see a mountain passing freakingly close, and then immediately before touching there are houses on the hills, so close, that you think you gonna hit them. Scary but it's the only place available, the rest are mountains.
Just follow the charts and ATC instructions that will take you pretty safe to landing, only two accidents reported in 25 years both landed at half of the runway and overshooting TACA 390 and USAF C-130 by the way any landing after the second taxiway is mandatory go-around procedure due a higher risk of overshooting TACA A320's always goes high landing due the approaching speed either over or after second taxiway
because of the ground effect. excess speed in the flare causes the airplane to float when its within one wingspan above the surface. he could float all the way down the runway if he wanted to...
It failed to respond to throttle input. I highly doubt it had something to do with someone filming or what ever on board. The same thing happend with an AA 777 last week. It's most likely a problem with the engines. Both the BA 777 and AA 777 has the same type (RR Trents)
For the same reason you're not supposed to use cellphones at petrol/gas stations. A few small incidents that are very unlikely to happen again was enough to put rules in place.
There's no rules for Airplane spotters dotted around the fences of airports with radios and cameras etc. In my opinion they're just as bad.
this airplane is a 737.. any lack of throttle response is likely the result of the pilot as the throttles are manual controlled and linked by cable, not computer.
You also have to realise this is quite a difficult approach, theres no ILS so the pilot is having to control height, a sharp bank arc heading and throttle all at the same time. Once weak turn and it could throw him completely off course.
What do you mean by flaps were up too late? I guess you mean spoilers, and these were not up too late, it would make quite a hard landing deploying them when still in the air, and autospoilers a used nowadays most of the times anyway so the deply as soon as possible automatically when gears have touched down, and what a yerk are you thinking to know how to do a pliots job?? Only because you have flown some times in your life?? I don´t think so......
It is Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. It is one of the shortest international airport runways in the world at about 6100 ft. The approach is on a U turn because of the mountains, so it is a difficult one, and if you're on the left side of the plane, you feel like the wing is going to scrape the mountain!
It was a fast landing, but that's normal, because you need speed for such a turn on final if you don't want to stall. At 3300ft elevation you have to fly faster anyway besauce the air is thinner.
And hey:
The runway is the shortest of all intl airports. The biggest plane aloud there is a B757.
What are you talking about?? Bad, Crappy planes??? This video is in a Boeing 757, and that is a sweet, powerful airplane!!! And there was nothing wrong with this landing!!
YES! American Airlines. Compared to other videos here, it looks like we touched down really far down the runway. Glad we had good brakes. Some planes have not had such good luck. In 1997, a C-130 from the Wisconsin National Guard ran off the end fo the runway, killing 3 people on board. Luckily, no one on the ground was killed.
Sorry but is not possible to land a 747 or other big aircraft because of the approach, there are mountains around the airport and Tegucigalpa is right in a hole. The runway is very short, 6100 feet.
This approach is called the AURORA 1 STAR, and it actually has a holding pattern built into the approach for the pilots to prepare themselves for the landing!
Do you know how much the landing/approach has changed since they took away part of the hill, and started to build houses on it? When I first flew in there in 1997, it seemed scarier from how close the wing tip looked to the ground on the big left turn. Of course, stopping in time on the short runway was next!
I honestly don't know, but since the majority of the landing is flown visually, I assume that the landing has changed over time only as much as the pilots saw fit to amend their approach as necessary to the changing terrain below them. I also doubt that the majority of the approach has changed, as a holding pattern is great for preparing for landing, and the approach can' be flown in poor weather anyways, so my best guess is that it has remained stagnant.
Im training to be a Pilot in Panama, but i born in Honduras.
Supposly Yes. AA pilots use to come before with the plane empty to practice that approach, then they came with passengers, so its not every AA pilot goes there. 757 is the biggest plane that can land there.
Also, it seems like the approach has "softened" over the years as they took away part of the mountain just before the runway. Still, you feel like the wingtip is about to scrape the ground making that turn to com in for the approach! I've been making the trip there about twice a year since '98, and its always a little thrilling!
Jesus Christ, that runway is short enough as it is, dosn't need someone to float the plane down the runway. Bet that plane got a proper check out in the wheels and brakes department after that landing, very very very hard braking. stopped right at the end of the runway, still going fast at the opposite touchdown marker
once I was returning to Teguz they canceled our flight because one of the brakes in one tire was all wasted and they didn't had an extra one in Miami, so it is true the captain has to make a full inspection of the external and internal part of the aircraft.
P.S:Thank God that was a good pilot if not I would be in heaven.jajajajaja
Since they touched down past the tower when the spoilers deployed we know that a 757 can land in less than 3,000 feet. Bet the FO was puckering a bit.

To david181993, who thinks the 757 was above the runway
for only 2 or 3 seconds:
(Your homepage profile says you are 14 years old,

The runway starts at 2:27
and the auto-spoilers only come up at 2:37.
Looking at it another way,
the plane touches down right beside the 2nd off-ramp
(the airport has 5).
In effect, the plane landed 40% down the runway.

QwertzProductions 4 years ago 2
is not shortes intl airport
rmcdedms 4 years ago
Yeah, found out too. Sry but that.

yeah AA gives all the central american, and haitian flights all the Bad, crappy planes.
louie77 4 years ago
What are you talking about?? Bad, Crappy planes??? This video is in a Boeing 757, and that is a sweet, powerful airplane!!! And there was nothing wrong with this landing!!
jbettger 4 years ago 3
I totally agree with you. louie77 is disillusioned. The 757 has ALWAYS been a solid A/C with a great history. Fast, powerful and a great ride.
murray1069 4 years ago
Funny you would say that about one of the most impressive commercial airliners ever built.
Kcrwflyer 4 years ago
You landed a bit fast maybe thats why
propilot1012 4 years ago
Nice landing - only a few feet past the money.
Very smooth - and you can thank your crew for that.

toncontin has one of the shortest runways in the world...it isn't the shortest tho!..gotta love the 757 capabilities!!

Jeez...was this really a 757? (Refering to uploader) <_<
iceman977th 4 years ago
YES! American Airlines. Compared to other videos here, it looks like we touched down really far down the runway. Glad we had good brakes. Some planes have not had such good luck. In 1997, a C-130 from the Wisconsin National Guard ran off the end fo the runway, killing 3 people on board. Luckily, no one on the ground was killed.

the plane was to big to land in here..

haha i'd like to see someone land a 747 on this one.
sexyemeni 4 years ago
Sorry but is not possible to land a 747 or other big aircraft because of the approach, there are mountains around the airport and Tegucigalpa is right in a hole. The runway is very short, 6100 feet.
enzymetab 4 years ago
Continental Airlines lands a 747 at Toncontin Internation everyday...I was on it a few weeks ago. It's actually a pretty amazing landing!
mooreka27 4 years ago
Continental doesn't have any 747s...you mean a 737 or 757?

This approach is called the AURORA 1 STAR, and it actually has a holding pattern built into the approach for the pilots to prepare themselves for the landing!
Cramsfordd 4 years ago
Do you know how much the landing/approach has changed since they took away part of the hill, and started to build houses on it? When I first flew in there in 1997, it seemed scarier from how close the wing tip looked to the ground on the big left turn. Of course, stopping in time on the short runway was next!
peterpots1 4 years ago
I honestly don't know, but since the majority of the landing is flown visually, I assume that the landing has changed over time only as much as the pilots saw fit to amend their approach as necessary to the changing terrain below them. I also doubt that the majority of the approach has changed, as a holding pattern is great for preparing for landing, and the approach can' be flown in poor weather anyways, so my best guess is that it has remained stagnant.

wow, late landing all right. If you check out google earth, that plane landed half way down the runway, way long.

Do you fly, and have you landed there? I've always heard that AA and others have only certain pilots who have qualifications to land there. True?
peterpots1 4 years ago
Im training to be a Pilot in Panama, but i born in Honduras.
Supposly Yes. AA pilots use to come before with the plane empty to practice that approach, then they came with passengers, so its not every AA pilot goes there. 757 is the biggest plane that can land there.
CaptMoo 4 years ago
Also, it seems like the approach has "softened" over the years as they took away part of the mountain just before the runway. Still, you feel like the wingtip is about to scrape the ground making that turn to com in for the approach! I've been making the trip there about twice a year since '98, and its always a little thrilling!

Jesus Christ, that runway is short enough as it is, dosn't need someone to float the plane down the runway. Bet that plane got a proper check out in the wheels and brakes department after that landing, very very very hard braking. stopped right at the end of the runway, still going fast at the opposite touchdown marker
Christopherwoo 4 years ago
once I was returning to Teguz they canceled our flight because one of the brakes in one tire was all wasted and they didn't had an extra one in Miami, so it is true the captain has to make a full inspection of the external and internal part of the aircraft.
P.S:Thank God that was a good pilot if not I would be in heaven.jajajajaja

Since they touched down past the tower when the spoilers deployed we know that a 757 can land in less than 3,000 feet. Bet the FO was puckering a bit.

gracias cvinaspilot
toapanta777 4 years ago
Saludos
