i think it's stupid, but the first song makes me cry! Maybe it's because of the movie, I don't know, but it's amazing, makes me feel happy and sad and ... it's ... well, no words left for me to say :)
I am not a fan of this movie, I will say that the cinematography and the portrayal of those islands were some of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen in any movie. This makes me think of my step father, a Marine Corps vet in WW2 and was on these islands (Guadalcanal and New Caledonia). He never talked about combat but often told me the beauty of these places. This gives a me great appreciation of the things that he must have seen. I'm actually crying listening to this, I miss him dearly.

@avemnevoiesideiarba Then convert! It's easier said than done, yes, but you should at least take a look into faith. I'm a Christian, but I read the works of Nietzsche, Sartre, and Camus out of my own curiosity. It's good to familiarize yourself with the other side of the argument, anyway, so even if you don't come out a convert, you'll still come out with a greater appreciation and understanding of both sides :)
Beautiful people, happy with the simple things in life. These people know nothing of the wars we wage and the hatred that drives our industrial economies. The Melanesian people live like human beings were intended to, thats why they call their little islands the happiest place on earth.
@summerzzzzz55 It's Tok Pisin, Melanesian Pidgin English, or Neo-Melanesian. It's like a common language that evolved from English. Only someone that understands it, can translate it properly, but it has elements of English in it that you can recognise...
@rongola Agreed. James Jones, the author of the Thin Red Line, was the real deal: the book was based on his combat experience in Guadalcanal, where he was wounded.
I remembering hearing this when i first saw the film and loving it. It wasn't until i heard an entire school of Namibian children sing when i travelled there this summer that i remembered it again. It is sad that this type of communal singing is lost in the western world. In some ways i really envy people like this.
I loved this music and never knew it was about Jesus. Knowing such does not make me like it less or more because the music stands alone. It could be about Drain-O and it would not change how I feel about it.
@Lewis351XE I can respect your free will, but I can't help my heart breaking people would make the right choice. Love may love despite all iniquities, but it cannot cease to will their removal.
Clearly, in a lot of ways those two guys on the island and the natives led much happier lives than what we have to go through in our modernized world. That's not to say that technology is inherently bad, we just abuse it and lose our contact with the beauty and simplicity of the world around us.
The Thin Red Line is a great movie because it shows how war brings out both the absolute best in people and the absolute worst. It cuts right through the bullshit, and how you react to it is based on who you are.
@almostconcerned Yes, I agree with you entirely. The island people and Witt with his friend, represent the best in people, whereas the ugliness of war and the soldier's suffering represents the worst of humanity. You can specifically see throughout the movie that Witt leans towards the better side of humanity, though unfortunately he gets caught up in war which eventually leads to his demise. Long live peace.
this is typical Anglican choir in Solomon Islands, Melanesia - the tunes are from Isabel Province; commonly known in the country for their beautiful songs!
I finished the book a few months ago and I must say there are some MAJOR differences. All in all I found Malick's version better. I can also definitely tell Malick's biggest catalysts were Charlie Dale and Lieutenant Band. I won't put any spoilers here but if you look closely I think you will agree.
One of the most impressive movies I've ever seen. I'm not usually into "artsy" movies but this got me right where it counts. If you didn't see this on the big screen, you've missed an amazing experience.
@wackyadhie Some similarities between Flores and the Solomons. The population density is relatively low compared to many of the Indonesian islands so the environment has stayed relatively intact.

@watchmyshoes22 yeah okay. Whatever pops your popcorn I guess. You're allowed to believe whatever you want, but sometimes it's best to keep your mouth shut (or in this case...keep your fingers off the keyboard). @Bertaut It's the poetic aspect in his films that give movies a new dimension which gives a different feeling alltogether to the audience, sheer class. Same done here.
I would had done everything in my power to stay at the island they show in the film, just remember the quote.... 'I've seen another world.. sometimes i think it was just my imagination..' Man that gave me chills, i've seen how cruel the world can be, and i know what he means.
i wasnt bored for a second watching this movie, i was fascinated by every expression, emotion, every single word. john c reilly was deffinatelyy one of the best characters. you could see so much about him through his face and then you get that little glimpse at the end. amazing
Pretty strange to think about how the TRL changed from its original premise. It's a fabulous movie, but I would have loved to have seen it in its original version. Poor Brody, btw :(
@tisbutafleshwound---Let's think now : "The New World"by Malick and compare to "Schindler's List" or "Empire of the Sun" by Spielberg....Is Malick still a genius???
@al12torr Yes. The New World is a supreme masterpiece and in my opinion, is Malick's most accomplished film (I've yet to see his 5th). Another underrated masterpiece. Its much better then either of those Spielberg films you've mentioned. In my opinion, comparing Spielberg to Malick is like comparing Stephenie Meyer to Shakespeare. But I suppose we disagree.
If u listen closely; u might pick up those English lines, Its a broken English dialect a direct result of the influence the American's have left on the shores of these islands, and as a Solomon Islander, we're still using it today. It's called pidjin.
Deep within everyones soul loves wraps tightly around you.. This brought tears to my eyes at this day and age seeing all the hatred and violence when in reality NOBODY wants that but its bred everywhere :( "Were living in a world thats blown itself to hell" Realest words throughout that entire movie. Keep your faith and spread the love god bless you all.
thin red line....best movie ever. watched it till sunrise up all night will never forget the greatest movie of all time, there is another world out there, its up to you to fine it.
Remember as a kid loved senseless violent war movies and saving prvate ryan was my fav but after some growing up saw this again and it hit me hard, in a good and euphoric way.
@gfdog@gfdog sorry if i sounded like pissing on SPR, I loved it too hell the veterans said it was right on with everything they went through so can't hate that, but i dunno know Thin Red Line just had more meaning behind the war and the voice overs were great, is just me or did the island feel like another character? just great in so many levels lol :)
@islanderboi89 Yeah I know what you mean. They kinda touch on different aspects of war which makes it difficult to compare. But yer I agree with your general thoughts- I love the fact that TRL looks at war on a philosophical and emotional level like that- so much more depth than most depictions! Interesting thought about the island- it sure did have an effect of its own i think. I liked the way they brought the natives into the story too- it was touching and well done.
these songs are amazing and make me forget about money, hate, war and other and everything bad in the world. Takes me away to paradise for 7 min and 10 sec. does anyone know if this perticular choir has other recordings perhaps?
i loved the two tunes so much i learned to play them on my guitar. i haven't seen the movie, but it looks great. i will definentally see it sometime in the future. peace
This is composition,.

@Bertaut It's the poetic aspect in his films that give movies a new dimension which gives a different feeling alltogether to the audience, sheer class. Same done here.

I would had done everything in my power to stay at the island they show in the film, just remember the quote.... 'I've seen another world.. sometimes i think it was just my imagination..' Man that gave me chills, i've seen how cruel the world can be, and i know what he means.

i wasnt bored for a second watching this movie, i was fascinated by every expression, emotion, every single word. john c reilly was deffinatelyy one of the best characters. you could see so much about him through his face and then you get that little glimpse at the end. amazing

Everybody go see The Tree of Life now!
Pretty strange to think about how the TRL changed from its original premise. It's a fabulous movie, but I would have loved to have seen it in its original version. Poor Brody, btw :(

This movie is so underrated while Saving Private Ryan is so overrated. Love the soundtrack. Malick is a genius and an artist.

@tisbutafleshwound---Let's think now : "The New World"by Malick and compare to "Schindler's List" or "Empire of the Sun" by Spielberg....Is Malick still a genius???
al12torr 9 months ago
@al12torr Yes. The New World is a supreme masterpiece and in my opinion, is Malick's most accomplished film (I've yet to see his 5th). Another underrated masterpiece. Its much better then either of those Spielberg films you've mentioned. In my opinion, comparing Spielberg to Malick is like comparing Stephenie Meyer to Shakespeare. But I suppose we disagree.
tisbutafleshwound 9 months ago 2
@al12torr I say Spielberg hands down...wonderful director...

If u listen closely; u might pick up those English lines, Its a broken English dialect a direct result of the influence the American's have left on the shores of these islands, and as a Solomon Islander, we're still using it today. It's called pidjin.

Simply the best, most inspirational war movie ever made. It's not some American hero bullshit. This one lifts your spirit.

Totally agree with the sentiment, though having the best battle sequences doesnt make saving private ryan senseless though.
gfdog 10 months ago
@gfdog @gfdog sorry if i sounded like pissing on SPR, I loved it too hell the veterans said it was right on with everything they went through so can't hate that, but i dunno know Thin Red Line just had more meaning behind the war and the voice overs were great, is just me or did the island feel like another character? just great in so many levels lol :)
islanderboi89 10 months ago
@islanderboi89 Yeah I know what you mean. They kinda touch on different aspects of war which makes it difficult to compare. But yer I agree with your general thoughts- I love the fact that TRL looks at war on a philosophical and emotional level like that- so much more depth than most depictions! Interesting thought about the island- it sure did have an effect of its own i think. I liked the way they brought the natives into the story too- it was touching and well done.
