Paarth the magic dragon, Lived on a hill, He grumbled lots And said some stuff On how to dragons kill. Little mortal Blades though Eyed that rascal Paarth, And said to Dovahkiin one day That Paarth bore mortals ill. Dovahkiin took weapons Spells and potions, And FUS RO DAH'd And JOOR ZAH FRUL'd And lo! he Paarth did kill.
gotta find the ending sad, when the little boy is not a little boy anymore, he's a teenager (or older), and no longer has that imagination about the dragon. :( A shame that we all grow up and leave some old memories behind, or think 'I'm too old for that'....
Buuut on the other hand, I love the melody and somehow find it peaceful too. :)
@AceOlive According to Wikipedia, the lyrics for Puff the Magic Dragon were based on a poem written by Leonard Lipton in 1959. It was recorded in 1963 by Peter, Paul, and Mary.
i dont agree with you guys! i have a book about puff and in the end it shows that the song is not so sad because jackie had really just grown up and came back to puff later with a child! his child then plays with puff!
Look I'm likw 12 okay and my dad used to sing it to me almost every night and my dad thought my nee langthed halloween cotume was to short, he wouldn't sing about pot, maybe the song writter was thinking about crack, but it was a song too and um btw it's about growing up. When you grow up you forgett about your imaganations, then there just old memories that last forever but just kind of sulk around like puff did after little Jakie Paper left. So I think this song would be my guilty plesure.fav!
I can see how the words can be interpreted as about marijuana. However, Snopes quotes Leonard Lipton, the co-writer of the song, who said that this song is about "loss of innocence, and having to face an adult world. It's surely not about drugs. I can tell you that at Cornell in 1959, no one smoked grass. I find the fact that people interpret it as a drug song annoying. It would be insidious to propagandize about drugs in a song for little kids."
yeah but the one making this song/program was probably or have done shrooms or acid.its like bob marley he sings about more than weed but if you smoke you will realise that it wouldnt have sounded like that if he didnt smoke himself.and i promise you there are alot of kid programs out there were the writer didnt realate the program o drugs.but he was high as hell when he camed up with the storie.google it and i promise you will find a few.
cover up...i assure you. what king of magic dragon is named "puff" lol. just like the beatles Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds- LSD acronym, was not for that drug. get a grip ok? it was NOT a childrens song, for i saw them in concert many times and they performed that song everytime and NO children were at these concerts and everyone lit up when this song came on. Just sayin first hand! sorry to burst anyones bubble lol.
it meant growing up from smoking pot. talks about bigger things making way for other toys. leaving for a better way to play and that is "growing" up in a way lol.
This is from Snopes that quotes Peter Yarrow, co-writer of the song: "As the principal writer of the song, I can reassure you it's a song about innocence lost...When "Puff" was written, I was too innocent to know about drugs. What kind of mean-spirited SOB would write a children's song with a covert drug message?"
@justasiam88 -thx, at least someone from that time period can say what they sang that song for. i understand it was made to be a children's song after the fact, and that is all good. but when i was at their concerts and lighting up and passing the doobies when this song came on and them on stage asking to get hits, it was NOT a children's song..lol. may anyone that believes everything they read, especially on snopes, research a little better and get the truth.
@stroh013 How dare you, you insolent brat! reading is everything! you can believe what you want to! you are a total moron stroh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bet you dont even know how to read right!!! what kind of books do you read?!!!! Are they all picture books you ,DUNCE?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@fairchay silly and immature! i was at actual concerts and saw peter yarrow taking hits from joints during the song!! so it is you that needs to get a grip on reality and know that more than 40 years later denial is easy. anyway, i am through replying to those that have their heads in the sand and beleive everything they read and not what they see.
@stroh013 that is a sick thing to think! jsut cause the dragons name is puff doesnt mean drugs! and ever think that maybe it meant he puffed out fire!? u no... LIKE A DRAGON??!!!
@GFlappersAndTheDuck i will not say another thing about this song, please belive what you will and do not reply to my statements. i could care less actually. have a great life and carry on!!!
My pop sang this to me also. He died when I was 25. Now I sing it for my son and neices and nephews. Sad, but when you think about what this song was originally meant was leaving smoking pot for harder drugs. But just for the actual lyrics it is a nice but sad song!
heyy ...my name is melody...i like this song too ( it is sad ) PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON LIVED BY THE SEA, AND FROLICKED IN THE AUTUMN MIST IN A LAND CALLED HONAH LEE..LOL
this is actually really sad.

Now there's no more dragons,
The skies are empty.
And sure enough
The Blades did cheer
And mighty tales tell.
But Dovahkiin was lonely
His friend ol' Paarth was gone.
From wintery mount
To wintery grave
He jumped and to death fell.
