  • Frenzy? hahaha

  • earlier, PAUL used to hold the pick differently than he holds now...

  • 3 times and i can go again

  • It was at that point that the bar was set.

  • my money is on him winning the contest....

  • @1skullduggery no shit sherlock

  • @jimmyleppard6 unless you were there, of course, covering your extensive catalog of def leppard licks; then i'm sure YOU would have won.

  • @1skullduggery LoL. I'm not into def leppard, dude. But, of course, you haven't realised what I was trying to say. I didn't mean I would've won, of course I wouldn't. I just wanted to say that you don't have write obvious shit like that just to get a thumb up. Did you read how to be a youtube dummy instructions?

  • @jimmyleppard6 try breaking the prozacs in half. it might help you properly interpret comments.

  • @jimmyleppard6 By him saying "my money is on him winning the contest..." he's already saying that it's obvious that he won. By you saying "no shit sherlock" you are saying that it's obvious that 1skillduggery would put money on it, which it is not.

It simply doesn't make sense to have said "No shit sherlock" in this situation... the only thing it really did was establish yourself as a douchebag.

  • my money is on him winning the contest....

  • he could have kept his picking hand that way and been fine......I hate it when he makes it sound he was worse off this way

  • I'm 19 NOW. I'm barely a twentieth of what he is now. might as well kiss my musical career hopes goodbye...

  • @MapleLeafAce between 18-21 is when people do most of their improvement on guitar. paul gilbert started young and kept at it. its not often you get young people dedicated that much to something.

seriously though, 8-12 hours a day for the next 2 years and you'd be doing that stuff.

  • @gamz4tlol As I've seen it, most successful bands are usually touring already by ages 19-21, and if you're not doing that by then, the odds are slim you'll get anywhere. People like Satriani, Vai, Gilbert, Friedman; they were all pretty much hitting it big by the time they were around 18/19, which makes me worry since I'm already 19, and I'm still a "basement guitarist."

  • @MapleLeafAce joe satriani was broke and barely known until he was 28. i see lots of people around the 25 mark concerned with age. in my personal exp, age means nothing if you have dedication (im a teacher). very few people actually become famous musicians around that age. most don't get recognition until they're about 30.

all i can say is that you shouldn't give up, especially at 19. you're still a kid man. just get a teacher, or take some pebber brown lessons. and PRACTICE.

  • @MapleLeafAce The only time you should worry about your age is at your death bed. Play for hours everyday, but only if you can't live without it, guitar has to mean more than your own life. You have to enjoy this and if not maybe fame might come to you like it has for thousands of mediocre guitar players out there (not calling you mediocre). Just keep evolving and see where it takes you.

  • @MapleLeafAce you gotta take into consideration that it may be difficult finding other musicians that play to your taste and like what you play also. it's hard forming a band if the other guys aren't at your level or aren't in to the same music as you.

  • He plays a little bit of what was gonna be Frenzy on Racer X

  • That fucker is a god damn machine.

  • I wonder if paul is aware this video is on the web? He'd probably appreciate watching it

  • @grybok1ng wut about Buckethead?

  • i could almost tune my guitar at age 19....it took a few more years, but i got it down. i've really advanced since then; i can now play 'smoke on the water' using just the high 'e' string. maybe i'll put a tutorial up...

  • Paul is from my hometown of Greensburg, PA . My uncle used to go to school with him. It's hard to believe that one of the true technical masters on the guitar is from my little town here.

  • so now we have a "relaxed" Paul!

  • That sounds a lot like Buckethead, I can definitely see where Bucket got some influence.

  • @cool21967 Paul Gilbert taught Buckethead for quite a while, actually. :)

  • Eruption v2.0

  • holy shit!

  • lol 19 hes just as good as he is now

  • this vid was recorded with a potato

  • Too bad it was recorded with a Teddy Ruxpin

  • i'm 19. i feel as though i'm way behind

  • I'm 18 and I can play this not perfect but close, self taught to :D

  • @TheInvalidChronicles jus watched ur vids nooo wayyyyy ur close to pg :) lol jus sayin

  • @TheInvalidChronicles im 15 and i can play that shit. youre a douchebag.

  • @Casebomb and ur a bullshitter if u could do that we'd know who you are

  • @baudelaire42 I know some fantastic shredders that are in the 16 age range. Maybe only a spot or two under Paul Gilbert at this point, but nonetheless, you've never heard of him.

  • @baudelaire42 i dont remember who i called a douchebag.. but anyways.. yeah, give me your email and then you will know who i am you poser guitar player..which im sure you probably are.

    .

  • @Casebomb you called paul gilbert a douchebag

  • 5 years later,he would become GIT's top instructor.Amazing!!

  • this has the quality worse of an amature porn lol

  • WTFUuuuucccckk man hes 15 and shred like a Motherfucker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 19 huh? That leaves me two years to attempt to match this. Wait, he was 18?! Then I have.....one......year... Ah jeez.... {8(

  • at 19 all i did was jack off and play x box

  • @yngwierulez1 then you're a jackoff haha

  • @yngwierulez1 And now you have moved on to... This is a realy cool video.

  • @yngwierulez1 hahahahahha best comment on the internet.

  • It's to much! Don't just play guitar, play music!

  • @TheShred123 He definitely plays music now. :)

  • im 16, i have 3 years to match this

  • @mpk3432 No, you have 3 years to beat it!

  • paul gilbert always but always has been good O.o

  • @MegaDehumanizer How would like Buckethead ...

  • what?

  • Looks like his arms were skinny then

  • baliw n pla to dati pa e!hahahah imba!

  • so hes always been a wanker.

  • @hojima

Fuck you. Paul Gilbert is easily one of the best guitarists of all time, if not one of the best musicians.

  • my last hope that I could eventually be as good as paul gilbert was "maybe it just took him 10 years to get that good and i've only been playing for five." he's 19 in this video, and i'm 19 now. fuck.

  • Paul Gilbertkenstein.... or genetic experiment

  • Paul Gilbertkenstein

  • yes it's very fast...NOISE!!

  • @DirtyD777

Holy shit? You're calling VIVALDI NOISE???

You really don't have any musical taste.

  • Just needs a bucket on is head

  • 40 Paul Gilbert is much slower than 19 y old.

  • Wait wait wait....he was 19 in 85? That makes him younger than Kirk Hammet......and he was Kirk's teacher XD

  • @that1ethnicguy

It doesn´t take much to beat Kirk Hammet.

A crappy guitarman with no personality at all.

  • @that1ethnicguy I believe it was Satriani that was Kirks teacher.

  • @that1ethnicguy It was Satch who was his teacher.

  • Comment removed

  • This is when he held his pick backwards!

  • booooooooooooooooooooorrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @nikolasbass I'm sure that you can't rock like paul..

  • lol this was when paul held his pick backwards

  • @stuartjonez That seemed to work pretty ok aswell. ;)

  • @stuartjonez I was wondering that too. Should I bother changing how I hold my pick? I pretty much hold the pick he does here and he does it effortlessly.....but in newer vids he's like "I hold the pick like this now"

  • This is sick!

  • I bet he wins the highschool talent show lmao

  • wow this is an awesome video!!! Paul actually talks about his picking style on other videos. He mentions how when he was young, he used to pick really weird with his right hand how it was not efficient and very tiring AND took him such a long time to fix his picking hand. b4 watching this video, i thought he'd wound really bad with that picking but he still sounded amazing!!!

  • The tapping was incredible, but the picking runs got monotonous.

  • 19-year-old PG could kick 44-year-old PG's ass lol

kidding, but I think he had more juice in the tank back then than now

  • @spray32 but his playing is more tasteful now than then :)

  • @ermonski no doubt man! :D

  • Jesus, I can barely move my hand up and down the fret board that fast just sliding.

  • paul gilbert ain't buckethead....paul gilbert is death cube k!!!

  • thats it know i now hes a robot!!!

  • Pfffft Jason Becker did this at 17, But since he is unable to play guitar Paul gets the title of greatest by default. Before you get pissy look JB up, everything he did was before he was like 21. Search Serrana, or AIM clinic.

    Inb4 flame for comment

  • @D1vid3By0 Paul Gilbert played like this since he was 15..he sent a tape to mike varney and he formed racer x after.

  • @tmh1717

imo Cacophony was better than racer X (of course cacophony had Marty Friedman as second guitarist so it's kinda an unfair comparison). Jason had no ceiling, he was just cut down by effing disease. Both guitarists were on Shrapnel (i'm not sure when Jason got on the label) and Jason was with DLR for a little while. Jason started playing when he was 5.

  • @D1vid3By0

You can't compare such awesomeness dude, please stop doing that... no one gets no title... Friedman, Becker, Bouillet, Gilbert... 2 incredible bands, 4 incredible guitar players...

  • @panelacosmica

Hey dude, you're right. I shouldn't compare guitarists, i love both of them but they each have their own distinct styles. I guess was feeling a little 12 year-old-ish when i wrote that comment, but the main reason i bring Becker up is because alot of people don't know him. I wish i heard about him earlier; i would have become serious about my playing sooner. Both guitarist have/had untouchable skill and were just all around amazing.

  • You gotta love when people are so good that you can't help but laugh in disbelief and amazement!!

    Your the man Paul!

  • holy shit, at19 I was playing guitar and im not close to that type of playing, I mean as flawless and accurate at that speed. Must give him props for that natural talent and effort he put on mastering his instruments.

  • 19 YEARS OLD ???

Damm I will have to practice the 24 hours to reach that tone hahaha

    God bless you

  • At 19, PG is amazing!

  • Paul Gilbert, you will always be the best guitarist in the world!!! You're guitar skills are like Paganini meets Einstein! You rule! Millions of thanks for the inspiration you have given so many guitarists worldwide.

  • @Bionic06 einstein sucked at playing the violin...

but i know what you mean ;)

  • How did you get this? o.o

  • fuck my life T_T

  • Look, he's using his old weird inverted thumb picking style thing.

    Dang dis shit is OLD.

I hate how he's still awesome at 19...

  • He was born playing this lick.

  • I think he won...

  • Jesus God, he was and is bad-ass.

  • Watching stuff like this at age 26 while trying to remember how to play "Back in Black" solo correctly makes me wonder: Did I practice enough in past 10 years?

  • @DumbEdain LOL...i'm still trying to memorize the Shook Me solo dude hahaha...

  • @Halocon yeah he said that he used to hold this pick differently when he was young search for "paul gilbert alternate picking lesson" on youtube

  • I give up T-T someone shoot me my dreams have been obliterated...

  • @Halocon Yes. I noticed that too. In his early years he said he used to angle the pick more upward. When he started experiencing some discomfort from that position with his thumb he switched to what he does now.

  • Total turd

  • oh SHIT!!! 19?!?! REALLY!!!

  • So, I have 2 years to get to that status. Challenge accepted.

  • What the crap, he's playing an epiphone wilshire there? :-O THAT GUTIAR IS PUG-UGLY

  • did i just hear a little scarified there?

  • And here we are three decades later playing the identical notes... Ha.

  • i still think this video is awesome as you can see paul playing with the old backwards thumb grip that he talks about.

  • Hey Chuck! It's Marvin! Your cousin... Marvin Berry! You know that new sound you lookin for?! Well listen to this!

  • yngwie and EVH created a monster

  • @taradead eddie van who?

  • @taradead - and PG created BH. All good things.

  • i fucking came when he started the four seasons.

  • wow, hes been playing those licks FOREVER

  • He was 18 at the time of the contest, there's an article about it somewhere. Thumbs up this comment because it's annoying that it says 19. That is all.

  • what a young beast!

  • i can't imagine being that good so young... he's so FAST. the biggest reason i improved my own playing was watching all the paul gilbert vids i could, he pretty much did it on his own! incredible

  • the cool thing is that he looks like he was a normal kid and has always had a dry sense of humor, unlike so many overly serious guitar nerds out there

  • respect for gilbert !! , i'm 19 and i truelly adrmire him no matter what age he is

  • I'm assuming that he won. Damn, he was a total beast even at 19..

  • Oh God, I'm 19 and still can't play like that. I'm going to keep practicing with Pebber Brown's material for sure :D.

  • Wow he had that Mozart stuff way early.

  • @ShinOnigashima it was Vivaldi

  • Right, Vivaldi's 4 seasons.. my bad

  • "no description available" - that's about right

  • damn he was crazier when he was younger ! i think.

  • does anyone know where to find a time machine? i wanna go back to where paul was in racer x and had his long puffy hair.

  • @sk8terchristian youtube is the closest thing we haave to a time machine boob

  • @deadcow444 boob? i hope u weren't tryin to say noob to start shit cuz that wouldn't make any sense

  • Anyone else notice his picking hand is different to how he plays now? =P

  • yeah he said it started to hurt his thumb later on the years

  • Yeah he was 18 - he was born in November and this was in summer

  • its cool to know he kept hist style for such a long time

  • rare

  • Vivaldi upside down tapping hehehe. Sick stuff, the year I was born!

  • Watching a 19-year-old play like that just makes me.....terrified! =O

    No...

.......SCARIFIED =P Lol sorry I had to...

  • Does anyone know where to find the video where he's younger than this? I think it got taken down or something. He's wearing a rush t-shirt and playing Van Halen.

  • I remember that, it was really cool.

  • @justinc89 the one where its like backstage and his tone is by far the best it's ever been?

  • @IbanezRokr exactly, where is that vid?

  • @cebix i think it got taken down :(

  • @justinc89 yea ur right. bring back those old videos!

  • Well, he was born in November 1966, so he could be 18 at that time if this video was shot, say, May 85.

  • ahead of his time,

  • pg!

  • ur right

  • Actually he is 19 in this not 15
