Probably my English is way not good enough to take the lyrics perfectly, but it feels like that the English version does not reach the deepness and darkness, hopelessness of the Hungarian version.

My conclusion without criticizing this version is that the Hungarian version is somehow better.

The English version is not really a translation at all but an entirely unrelated set of lyrics. Here is a translation of the Hungarian:

I don't get what the point was in the firsz 45 seconds... Perhaps, it's just me, but I don't think that it really fits the meaning and the message of the song.

The thing with the beginning is that it is really the end. The Billie Holiday version and others end with that part. I never liked that part because it wasn't true to the rest of the song, and I think Ray Charles thought the same thing so he just started out with it to fool whomever knew the original version. The orignal goes from sad to happy, whereas Ray Charles' version goes from happy to sad. I like it that way ;)

I think I get your point and I really acknowledge Ray Charles and think that the covers of 'Szomorú Vasárnap' are really expressive and beautiful. But I still don't think that these two melodies fit together in one song. And, in the original one it doesn't go from sad to happy, it remains gloomy, and the tone doesn't change either. I love that song, maybe because it was written in my mother tongue and it truly speaks to people's heart and to those who have ears to let its message in.

As I understood it, the happy part was put in Billie Holiday's version in order to get it played on the radio, otherwise it would be too depressive - in other words, the radio wanted a happy ending for the song. This is why I thought Ray Charles was so genious tos start out happy and end it sad...

Ok, that seems to me that we talk about the Hungarian song without knowing what it is really about. If you say that the English version - which is a translation and thus is unable to give back the message of the original song (however hard they try) - is more depressive and suicidal than the original song, you need to think it again. I understood that since you don't speak Hungarian you don't really get the atmosphere of the song, but believe me, it's much more effective than any version of it.

I know what you mean, but I wasn't really talking about that. The original Hungarian song is, as I understood it, was from a poem by László Jávor and it was about that Sunday when the carriage came back without the "you"-person, and then the last Sunday is hinting a suicidal scene. I sense the depression in it, but my heart goes out to the English version which uses different phrases such as "would they be angry if I thought of joining you". Just my own taste, I guess...
