Saw the original in it's first week. The most powerful opening of a Broadway show I ever saw. The movie could never capture the physical nature of the stage and the horror of the opening with the Pipe Organ and the whistle.
If the movie had used it, it could have been set at the wax museum after closing hours. Lines could be sung by Jack the Ripper, Dr. Crippen, Charlotte Corday and the wives of Henry the Eighth. leading to Todd's barbershop display.
@Phanatic12009 it was considered too stagey for the film. Also, there's a lyric that says "what happens then well that's the play, and he wouldn't want it to give a way." What it could it have become, "what happens then, well that's the plot, and he wouldn't want us to give it all out." Doesn't quite have the same quality.

I hate how the song makes me feel from about 2:40 to 2:50.

The movie would have been even more awesome if this song was in it. :(

I love the soprano's at 2:31. Gah, this makes me want to be in the ensemble instead of playing Lucy

@XxCeMLIAxX That was my thought exactly. Don't get me wrong, I adore the movie, but I wish this had been left in.
