  • Hello visit our channel!

  • Hi

  • 5:50 LOL!

  • First of all, thanks for this great lesson, you are the master of bass!

I have a big issue, and it's very frustrating, when I try to slap strings I get no proper sound like it sounds when I pull the string, when I add more volume on my amp pulling makes very loud and strong sound but when I slap I just hear a bang. Is this my fault or my bass guitar is bad?

I have SX Jazz Bass, and small 15watt combo amp.

    Thanks!

  • Great Tutorial, Thanks!

  • Fuckin tight

  • Sounds like porn.

  • Hey Marlowe, what strings and gauge are you using on this bass. I have a Stingray classic and i love it but it is still not sounding quite the same. Is the pre Ernie Ball that much different?

  • @dslapster64 Dont remeber the barnd but the gauge s 45 - 105. Im playinf through a lot of amp sims and fx (Korg px4d) so yuodont hear the clean bass sound at all

  • @MarloweDK What bass do you like better for funk this musicman or one of your fender jazz basses?

  • @dslapster64 if i was you i would use rottosound jazz strings

  • marlowe, le meilleur prof de basse du web !!! ;) merci pour tes conseils avisés. (very good advice) ciao !

  • First of all, very nice playing. I've been playing with my fingers for a long time, so I decided to try something new.

I can't seem to get the right tone when I do the left hand slap. I either accidentally fret a note or I simply stop whatever note i was previously playing. Do you have any suggestions?

  • that was so funky i had to wash my neighbors ass!

  • You've been a HUGE help to me with your slap/mute videos. Thank you, sir!

  • your english is just fine..

your playing and dissection great and very useful many thanks

  • WOW, you play excellent. Very impressive and your English is quite good also. YOu have a firm grasp of the English language.

But your BASS player is awesome. Thank you for this wonderful vdeo. I learned a lot just by watching you break it all down.

thanks you so much again :) You ROCK

  • @Janicemaxwell You are most welcome, and thank you for the compliments:-)

  • I'm really enjoying learning from your videos and hearing your great playing and excellent taste in music! I've been a guitarist for 30 years and I am only now beginning to actually learn to play the bass instead of playing it like a guitar player (which means badly!) What sort of practice amp do you use or what can you recommend? I just bought a beautiful '77 Stingray identical to yours and I would love to plug in, but it sounds horrible through my guitar amps:(

  • @garbeaj For this i use a Korg Pandora px4d

  • @MarloweDK That looks like a really handy little unit. Thanks for the reply, I'll check that out:)

  • My wirst is hurting of slapping and playing...bullshit:/

  • Cool great playing and your in the pocket DOOD!

  • nice leSSon for Slap-beginnerS like me... quite funky, and pretty eaSy

  • go to .thomann.de and search basses for a sound sample.

Choose slap bass sample, and you'll get this lick

  • Elsker den danske accent :D

Men super fedt spillet :D! spiller selv lidt funkey bas for sjov men gad godt at have din erfaring!

  • Your explanation of style is as eloquent as your playing. For me, I can do it (kind of) but would have a tough time explaining it to another player. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • @nefferteri2 You are most welcome:-)

  • Thanks for the cute joke!!! I guess I have so much to learn. One comment to you: Alot of bass players on Youtube are very good at copying the legendary bass play, which is not a really bad thing, you improvise riffs of your own creation, which puts you above the rest...Extraordinaire!!!! I am so glad I have met you. I am interested in how music is played ,loved & enjoyed from other cultures over the world. I notice in the European countries they love our Funk, dance & Jazz & blues. GREAT!!

  • @MarloweDK, thank you for the prompt response. I a beginner bass play and so eager to learn from bass LEDGENDS, like yourself. Far most I appreciate your time

and everything you have to offer for bass lessons. You inspire me! My first base is a Yamaha RBX1700, it has two pick-ups for Jazz & precision. I have checked the wiews, it is an excellent bass to begin. I have so much to learn yet. I have never heard of very scary notes or ghost notes. I get the feeling it's a note improvised????

  • @nefferteri2 It was a joke, think about it "Boooooo!";-) Anyway ghost notes are notes without pitch , an example is when you pluck a note without pressing down a note on the fretboard, you get a "thud" sound

  • What is ghost notes???

  • @nefferteri2 Very scary notes;-)

  • yo this is FUNKY, Larry Grahm would be proud of u

  • Thank you thank you thank you for this! Your English is great by the way.

  • Awesome. I am a drummer, but do some bass playing as well. This is inspiring to me. I must go and practice some bass now!

  • Hi,

I used to have Music Man 20 years ago but could not get to grips with it.

If only You Tube was around in those days with your videos I would have understood the magic of bass playing.

Great work and thanks for your inspiration.

  • man, that's so useful to me, i can't slap decently because i get all mixed up with the ghosts notes... thanks man ;)

  • How loosely are you holding your right hand Marlowe?

  • @MrVaalium Loosely i dont know, but im always in contact with the bass - with my underarm

  • @MarloweDK Thanks for the response. Your doing a great service by posting these gems.

  • I have the olp versoin of this bass its rly nice

  • Greaaat sound!! what amp are you using??

  • I want to get good to the point where I find it hard to analyse what I play :-o lol. That's amazing. You're like..."ok ahhh what did I do here?" It's like your body moveds independently of your brain to get the sound you want. Again...amazing.

  • You're the best!

  • Great Playing my Friend, Thanks for your instructions now all I have to do is try to master your abilities!! I am a Jazz Double Bassist (60) but have a 4/5/6 string electrics which get very little use. After seeing you, I've got the urge to blow the dust off the electrics and get into it. PLEASE do a jazz walking bass lines using GHOST NOTES ! Love to see what you do with that !!! cooljas, Australia PS :- THE greatest D/Bass player to ever live was a Dane :- Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen !

  • @mickpowermans thx and you are most welcome:-) I do have a walking video or two somewhere, try and search my videos for "Walking"

  • Hej MarloweDK.

gode videoer du laver her inde. du må gerne lave nogen på dansk :)

    Mvh,

  • @kingsQ123 Jeg laver snart en DVD på dansk:)

  • What's the second note you play at 1:00? Between the open E and 6th fret. Open A or muted 6th?

  • you're spot on with the English! A great techniques vid, fellow bassist! Thanks

  • Hi dude..

I already play guitar since 3 years ago... i know to play some metal and bla bla...

But i ever liked bass, and i'm prettending to buy one...

And i don't know if i buy a 5 strings one, or 4 strings one...

and also if i buy a active or a passive one...

Can you explain, or record a video showing the differences?

I love slap bass and wanna so fking buy a bass, but dunno what kind of one i should buy.

    Thanks

    U're a great teacher

  • Thanks so much for sharing this! You could not have done a better job breaking this down for those of us who are puzzled by slap technique. This really helped me to make some progress - I'd been playing the same patterns for many years. Its nice to see somebody post something of this quality who is a great player AND great teacher.

  • lol thanks. I might go off to try these techniques.

  • Fingerstyle is on fire, thanks, that opened my eyes a little bit...

  • great playing/lesson, as always.

(and sweet antonioni's "blow up" poster!)

    cheers!

  • In making this video, did you use

any type of effect on the bass,

because it sure sounds like it!?

  • Commodores - Brickhouse. =)

  • Very informative!

  • Hey man, nice video, but can I ask you something?

I am practicing my technique, but how do you make the "pop" sound when you mute with your left hand? I just do not get the pop.

    Thanks!

  • @Danertothefaner Mute the G string a little less to get the "pop" out

  • @MarloweDK Haha thanks but, when you did a thumb slap, and then mute it with your left hand, it seems with you that you get a kind of "pop" sound. When I try to do that, I do not get the pop. How do I get the pop?

  • @MarloweDK Haha thanks but, when I mute my E string, I do not get the same sound as you make when you mute your E string. Do you know why/how to fix it?

  • ugh i cant get this.... its hard.

  • THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME IT IS APPRECIATED

  • I'd love to play like that a long way before me :(

  • Hvad sker der min makker?

  • ive got that bass!! xD

  • thanks.

    You are the best....

  • men i have learned a lot

  • You're danish, right?

  • @jagjaghuh Ja:)

  • @MarloweDK Ni danskar är grymma på musik

  • marlowe is from denmark look hes name...(marloweDK) the dk is from denmark.. hejsa jeg synes du spiller nice vil godt lære det der ghost noder

  • you're greater!!!

  • niicicee

  • thanks marlowe dk, i just learned something new today :D

  • Thanks dude for the video, I always knew how to left hand slap, but this tutorial has really shown me how to utilize it in a more dynamic, funk way.

  • Top stuff Mr Marlowe. This and your other videos are are excellent because you really take the trouble to explain without 'talking-down' to the viewer. I've been playing this kind of style for years but I could still learn a lot from you. Thanks for uploading

  • Is that a musicman bass?

  • dude, you sound great really but your timeing is a lil off but you got the skills

  • thank you for taking the time to explain and break stuff down. I couldn't hear your voice too well though maybe turn your mic up?

  • Very patient and clear and i love how you go off on tangents too! I'm gonna be ages going thru this ;) there's nothing wrong with your english either!

  • VERY impressive!!

  • best teacher ive seen on youtube, ive played rock/metal bass for a very long time and i ty for allowing me to learn the rudiments of a new skill so easily, of course i have the advantage that my fingers are well trained but youve allowed me to make a whole new sound for my own pleasure...respect mate

  • richard bona slap at start

  • This helps a lot. You're a great teacher.

  • i play funk, jazz-funk piano... i want to jam with you

  • this is exactly what i have been looking for thank you

  • Comment removed

  • yeah like Louis Jhonson , it is the musicman no??

  • thank you! it is great that musicians share their experience. this will make music better. and i hope it will make me also a better player. thanks again and congratulations for a very clear video which is great!

  • Comment removed

  • thank you very much...for a long time i had no clue how to get all the deadnotes in such a short time out of my bass...now i tried the hit on the fretboard by the left hand and now it's sounding like good slapping :-)

  • @peda1fachso I dont understand!!

I just can't left hand slap i don't know if im not doing it correctly or if its my bass or something.

it just stays silent or if i press to much the string sounds awful. it doesn't sound like an attack or a ghost note.

  • @killingaces I'll mail you

  • You are good man

  • Thank you so much! Greetings from Argentina! =D

  • gracias!!!!!

  • brother te pasaste, es la mejor explicacion, no te preocupes por el idioma, la musca es universal....

(brother, wow, jajaj, it`s the best explanation, don`t worry for the lenguage, the music is universal....)

  • tears of joy

  • great technique.. i couldntt hear your explanation clearly.. it really helped me anyway

  • man i have been using the technique for a while and didn't even know there was a name for it

  • wow thanks a lot man ! love that technique

  • ok thanks, I've been studying that I have recommended Tony Oppenheim and I think very good the method, but I notice that your technique is slightly different, if you tell me that this method is good it will continue to study, another question of I recommend studying improvisation to develop phrases as well as you do, thanks

  • Yes my technique is...mine and is developed by learning from a lot of sources - mostly by listening to and learning to work of the masters.

"Slap it" just one method I have learned from. But in this particular video im in fact playing much in the style of Louis Johnson with the percussive slaps. And remember - there is no "wrong" ways of doing it - you may even create a new style;-)

  • @MarloweDK first time ive ever sent a personal message to anyone but, you have inspired me to play new forms of bass, as a retired death metal bassist, i can now enjoy and expand my bass playing to new levels, ty for your patient tutorial, id b e happy to converse with you about metal techniques if you ever wish to ty once again!

  • Hi..., do not speak English very well, that all these videos good tines of the low !!!!!, musical education that I slap improvisation methods would you recommend? you have one done for you?THANKS

  • The old Slap it by Tony Oppenheim is still good

  • muy bueno

  • I've been playing music for more than 20 years. Your videos show some of the most intuitive and fluid bass playing I have ever heard. You're a fantastic teacher. Thanks for posting.

  • Wow - That is AMAZING!!!

  • *wobble wobble* lol great vid

  • Magnifishit, man. You have good skills.

  • nice!!!!!!!

  • I've found that to get a nice left hand slap sound, it helps to have your action good and low so that when you hammer down on the strings there is less for required. It also makes playing altogether a little bit more of a relaxed activity. Which I think is a very important thing when learning slap bass techniques.

  • MASTER!!

  • how come when im doing left hand slappijng i get all this harmonics going on??

the only way to stop this seems like leaving the hand on the fretboard longer than it should be....any suggestions

  • If you are getting a harmonic sound, either slap more firmly or get more flick in your wrist so the slapping hand is touching the string for less time. Let your hand bounce on the strings.

  • ive been playing slap for about 3 months now and been a bassist for 3 years, but i cant get the left hand slap sound could u please help me out becuase i cant find a good technique for triplets

  • Thanx man that really helps

  • Merci beaucoup, encore un peu trop difficile pour moi mais j'ai compris l'essentiel reste a mettre en pratique oups;;;;;

  • This video has given me new bass planes to explore, especially the part with the "left hand slap"'. Explicit and detailed explanations - simply perfect!

  • Cool

  • fantastic riff and great instruction! but i'm having trouble getting a good left-hand slap sound. does it help to have the string action quite low for this? or do you have to slap quite hard? when i try the left-hand slap, the strings mute but i don't get much slap sound.

  • thanks man

    you are a good teacher

    keep on whith it !!

  • che pazienza!!

  • im kidding i really apreciate your lessons man you are very good

  • not fair he has a giant thump :(

  • I love how instead of starting out with gayass talking like everyone else he's just like "Eat this funky ass bass line faggots." *jam* "Okay now that I have your attention, talk time."

  • Dr Marlowe is from Spain

  • No, yo no soi

  • In the beggining it was like Fiku Miku by Bartosc Krolik :) so sweet

  • hey, every time i try to do the left hand ghost, it just ends up being like a hammer on, its downright impossible not to get a ringing note out. any tips?

  • hello! the bassline you play at the beginning , is it from a particular song? can anyone tell me?

thanks a lot MarloweDK !!! have a nice day

  • Sounds like something from Larry Grahm.

I'm not posative but I think he either played that or something similar in his instructional video.

  • @zichlmesa this is one of luis johnsons basslines...if u look it up ul find it ez

  • Well its my own bassline, but of course in the style of LJ;-)

  • you're the best

  • unbelievable, you keep inspiring me. thank you so much again.

  • Hey, your bass does sound like a bass - I mean not like an iron handler's backyard :)

And you explain clear and precise

    Thanx!

    ( 8:56 -> GENIAL!)

  • what kind of amps do you use

  • hello, what this bass that you are playing, also like to know if this model is the same model of Louis Johnson. Thank you for your attention

  • thanks man! this helps add so much depth to my slap lines and makes it ten times easier to play triplets.

  • thank you for giving me THE missing link in my bass playing!

  • Thank you very much

  • These are pearls guys. Other bassmen may show you the techniques, but DK dissects them.

All single note root thumpers should be required to watch MarloweDK videos.
