This video is okay until the end. It recommends some modest reforms when really we need to do away with not just military sonar, but the military and sonar altogether.
MARINE ECOSYSTEMS WORK IN HARMONY BENEFITING ALL MARINE SPECIES!
WE as humans are erratic, conflicted; disorganized. Every decision is debated, every action questioned. Every individual entitled to their own small opinion. We lack harmony; cohesion; greatness.
ALL comments below/everywhere r ALL HUMAN points of view!
NONE of you/us can EVER genuinely experience the damage we humans have done to marine life because we DO NOT OCUPY/LIVE IN THAT ENVIRONMENT! THEY are NOT polluting ours NOR are they present here on land/air IN OUR environment. WHY do WE deem ok to enter theirs?
There needs to be an alternative, eco friendly substitute for these practises. I think people need to set their sights on developing that substitute, rather than trying to fight a losing battle though.
Its hard to generate ELF when the 1/4 wave length is over a mile long. Even with heterodyned phased transmitters, your impedance mismatch is to great to transmit at any great power. Why don't you blame the other guys with their high freq? Two or more of them are off the Atlantic coast right now.
You should hear what the Russians use for sonar. It starts low, and it feels like your skin is crawling. Then it spirals up. Or listen to what the environmentalists used to scare the seals away. Seal bombs sound like a sledge hammer. The worst is the under water volcanoes near Alaska and Hawaii. The steam explosions ripple all around you. Shrimp clicks are deafening. An earthquake is like something hit you.
Hmmm? Sorry what was that? Can't hear you above our own Sonar-Buoy's at Astoria. Funny how they mainly are dying around the Navys training exercises. Whales have known how to avoid undersea volcanic activity however the Navy ships don't always stay in one place and will use different types of Sonar at different times. No centuries of warnings like from natural sources like the ones you mention.
E.L.F. (Extremely Low Frequency) sonar is now aboard every U.S. Navy ship and is no longer used just for detection or communication. Now it is being used as a weapon. Most alarming is the fact that the U.S.Navy's E.I.S. which has been approved (April 13th 2009) allows the Navy to "take" as many as 125,000 marine mammals a year through training with this system just in the Pacific Northwest.
So it says here operate in places without marine life? Well what if a foreign hostile submarine is invading our waters nearby places where a lot of marine life is living? Would I allow that sub to penetrate our waters just because there are marine life? Fuck no!! I will blast my sonar and detect that sub release my torpedoes and preserve the security of our waters. The whales can go fuck themselves I have more things to worry about.
That was funny...but you are thinking about yourself. Marine life is life also...and should not be treated like trash.I will stand up for marine life, even if im the only one. you have more things to worry about like brushing your teeth
I care for the environment. But this is too much. How would our defese submarines work if we dont use sonar? How could we defend ourselves without our naval ships? Treehuggers i swear they need to get a life.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
survival of the fittest. if the whales can't figure out how to defend themselves thats their own falt. frankly its embarassing that we are protecting a different species when our on species has its own problems. forshame.
survival of the fittest? hahaha u suuuck, a selfish b4stard indeed. ur sort of thinking is a barbarian brain. Oh wait, even the first nations cared for the environment. I really wish i can submerge you in the water than blast a sonar right infornt of you. Cover your ears all you want i bet it would not work. especially for this animals that the only thing they can do is get away from it but since sonar cover miles its imposible for them to escape while being almost paralyzed to death.
Whales are an important part of the Earth's ecological structure, we all are. No matter how much we try to separate ourselves from nature, we are still all interconnected. It is vital that we keep biodiversity and preserve the intricate balance of the Earth's ecosystem. Everyone has a part, we all came from the Earth, and one day will return to Earth. Indeed, the ignorance that many of us possess will ultimately lead to our demise.
To all you pro SONAR guys out there, I have one thing to say to you......RIGHT ON!!! I myself was once a STG. We do limit the use of our our SONAR beyond all belief. In all my years as a SONAR Tech I went active about three times. THAT'S IT!! Clearly these people have no clue that North Korea has one of the largest sub fleets in the world. Guess who's right there with them? CHINA! Isn't learning fun kids? As for Russia, they still has a ton of subs, and if you haven't noticed they still play war
The fact that I do not agree with SONAR practices occuring in so close proximity to cetaceans that it kills them, does not make me a tree hugger. Other coutnries do have subs too, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't take precautions in using them around marine mammals. Many of these animals are endangered and the excruciatingly loud sound is often behind mass strandings.
Let me put a noisy F-15 next to your ear until you hemorrhage, and then you tell me this situation is funny.
I agree with you. Whales are intelligent creatures that need to be preserved. We can't just damage the sensitive and complex ecological structure of Earth just because there are greedy people who control ignorant people and cause them to have war with each other just to obtain what they want. War is caused by want to control religion, money, land, and food. We inflict damage, not only unto nature, but unto ourselves. WHALE POWER! I'm a Tree hugger, and PROUD OF IT! TREE HUGGERS UNITE!!!
record that screeching noise loudly on your ipod then travel miles from home then put your ipod on max...to have more of the feeling make a family member or friend walk you home blindfolded and to reconize your way say marco then he says polo then put your ipod on max youll see what it is to be bleeding from the ears
who are we detecting? The WWII is over so the Japanese aren't a threat. The Cold War is over so the Soviets aren't a threat. The War on Drugs hasn't changed, because drug subs are still being pulled behind boats. All this is is a waste of tax dollars on war games. Dam US Military you should be ashamed of yourself.
If you had any type of access to military message traffic like I do, you'd know what there is out there. Sonar is also used to detect drug runner boats that surface radar can barely pick up, so it also benefits your kids in a way...right? And the US mililary is the only one with sonar regulations...you're forgetting foreign countries that have none...so what about them?
the problem with your argument is that the DAMAGE far out ways the benefit.
The military uses this technology "recklessly" & w/o any regard or study for the possible effects.
And your drug runner argument is flawed, because unlike the 80s today drugs come in via land, air & sea & are for the most part home grown. So by your logic should we place land mines & anti-a/c missiles along the borders??
We live in a different time now were this technology should ONLY be used in a limited manner
It is used in a limited manner, we have to request to go active and post watches to look out for any marine life. So yes, it is limited; unlike other countries. If the damage outweighs the benefit, why are other countries making more advanced submarines that cannot be detected without powerful sonar? As far as the drug runners go...I went on a drug-ops deployment 2 years ago, and we seized 25 tons of COCAINE. So whos argument is flawed now? I strongly encourage you to research these matters
Did Mr. gung-ho pro-Navy even bother watching the video? If he had he'd have seen the mass-killings and the US government own study saying it was because of the super loud sonar. If he watched he'd not ask "what about industry" he'd know the vid talks about Navy AND industry, and how both can still function but without murderous effects on whales.
STS=Sonar Technician Subsurface (aka submariner). I can guarantee he knows more than you ever will about sonar. Apparently he did watch the video if he responded to the inaccurate comments. And please don't act like the US is the only one at fault, we're the only country that has sonar regulations.
Also the only country that has spent over 50 years in the sonar business. They can't wrap their pea-sized brains around the fact that the USN gives a shit about our oceans and are the #1 financier of ocean studies. Well they are also pissed that they don't get to know the facts.(lack of a security clearance) I think this really pisses them off. Well all you envirofrauds, you don't need to know. You haven't earned the right.
Mr.gung-ho navy listens and listened for over 15 years, approx 12,000 hours. If you know someone with more experience, bring them forward. The loudest sound I ever recorded was a blue whale off the coast of Australia in 1968. The loudest sustained sound was a rain squall in Hawaii in 1973. There are sonars that have the potential of causing damage to marine animals. There are far more humans with the same potential. Perhaps you could provide a solution that addresses both issues.
Prada Happy: Notice it's ALSO industrial noise, which is CONSTANT. Navy has had regulations about transmitting into the water, and active transmissions last no more than 30 minutes and are only active to reveal potential subsurface contacts. Read more about this before you believe a youtube video.

Well hougy6, 30 minutes or not, it is the noise itself which is doing the harm so that 30 minutes regulation is of little use. No doubt the industries are at fault too but don't be the kettle calling the pot black.
Just think about this: How many Navies are in the world? What Navy has regulations with their sonar, even BEFORE these mammals were found as they were in the video.
Yea that's right, USA is not the only country with a Navy and is the ONLY one that has regulations. If you're going to attack any Naval service for this, don't blame your own countries Navy. I suppose if we go to war you'll be wanting us to use sonar as much as we can to protect the states? Hrmmm...

I like it when they blame all sonars, chief. When in fact the Navy spent +$18 million to research this matter. If the tree huggers had any brain, they'd complain over the new LFA sonar the Navy is testing. If they complain now, would they complain about us using if we're at war with a country that has its fleet of submarines? Hmmmm.
I'm sure those affected by 9/11 feel the same way as you. It's either stay ahead of the threat, or fall behind it and be destroyed by it. Which do you prefer?
i already have. so, fine you win. go navy. to be honest, i don't care too much about anything besides my family. and, i love to see and live to my own children REPRODUCE. so, yeah, whales be totaly wiped for all i care. so, please, don't shoot!!
this is why 152 dolphins were killed in oct 2007 in iran. that's also why there was a shark found 100 miles upstream from the ocean in the euprades river--trying to escape the deadly sounds.
In a river? 152 dolphins? Marine mammals do not run just from Active Sonar Operations. I suggest you open an Oceanography book and read about it before you make false statements.
US Navy has regulations about transmitting close to shore, it cannot be transmitted within about 10 miles from the coast. So the chances of that being from sonar is unlikely. And there is no valid evidence that says the 152 dolphins died from US Sonar.
Deadly huh, well a Cardinal (Its a bird) has a call that registers at a higher DB/A scale than a active transmission from a LA class submarine.
Now allowing for some funky transitions, due to the physics of sound and water that is about the same sound pressure level as an electric drill at 20 ft. Deadly huh?????
It's intresting to see the dB can be so high in the water. Highest possible dB in air is 190dB. A cannon fire is at 180dB and well, if any humans listening to that sound they go deaf at an instance, so think what 235dB can do... Don't even wanna think about it.
You have as most enviros do, oversimplified the issue. Sound pressure levels are quite different in H2O as opposed to "air". A real good reference is by William Hamby and can be found in Wikipedia under Sound Pressure Levels.
I assume you spoke of shock waves which is a physical manifestation of sound pressure. I'm not sure what chockwaves are????
Nothing from the self proclaimed sonar experts eh? That was expected, in as much as actual knowledge of a subject has no place in the Environmental Movement.
Danger Danger NSF reverses self on DDT ban, got to be some money in there somewhere.
Well not all the infro passed along NRDCflix is B.S.
Some of this is actually true. The navies of the whole friggin world use sonar. The longest pulse I ever used was 250 milliseconds. I know it is pointless to pass along facts to you people who must have some cause to stand behind. Research both sides=good science.
i beleave this is a smkoing gun here to the marine world ..weapons testing ..also look at heats rays and sound weapons the us police are now equiped with perhaps to use on there own city folk ....hmmmmm
NRDC good job. Other way to make your voice heard is by contacting your congressmen via "take action" from NRDC. The majority of the senators that oppossed conservation/environmetal initiatives lost their seats during the last senate elections. The conservation / Environmental move is strong, do not sit quietly, take peacefull and legal action.
Oh great, so this is why the lady was all mad and started sending hate mail to me. Navy already prevents sonar in certain circumstances. This video is referring to the new sonar being developed, not all surface ship sonar make whales beach themselves.
...stupid humans that only care about themselves kill these animals who live life just like we do....smart humans care for them...the further we try to do things for ourselves the more these animals die...we DON'T NEED too much for ourselves..
This video is okay until the end. It recommends some modest reforms when really we need to do away with not just military sonar, but the military and sonar altogether.

Nothing from the self proclaimed sonar experts eh? That was expected, in as much as actual knowledge of a subject has no place in the Environmental Movement.
Danger Danger NSF reverses self on DDT ban, got to be some money in there somewhere.

Finally, at least someone here has some knowledge of sonar. I suspect you are/were a Sonar Technician as I am now?

23 years worth, my well informed brother. I even developed my own theory on noise pollution.

235 db ???????
where did you people dig this little blurb of b.s. up
AN/SQS-56 Sonar 131dba@250m/s max pulse width.
Go ahead challenge me, lets make it puplic right here right now. I fart in your general direction.
sundog47 4 years ago
Well not all the infro passed along NRDCflix is B.S.
Some of this is actually true. The navies of the whole friggin world use sonar. The longest pulse I ever used was 250 milliseconds. I know it is pointless to pass along facts to you people who must have some cause to stand behind. Research both sides=good science.
Peace

Wow, I didn't even know things like that went on.
This disturbs me and I feel so bad for the marine animals. I hope something is done about this.

The worst thing of all is that it does not HAVE to be this way.

orgonite is needed underwater to help dolphins counterattack these sonar harms.

With today's technology, peace-time training of SoNAR can and should be done without actually transmitting into the water. ...period....
