There needs to be an alternative, eco friendly substitute for these practises. I think people need to set their sights on developing that substitute, rather than trying to fight a losing battle though.

Hmmm? Sorry what was that? Can't hear you above our own Sonar-Buoy's at Astoria. Funny how they mainly are dying around the Navys training exercises. Whales have known how to avoid undersea volcanic activity however the Navy ships don't always stay in one place and will use different types of Sonar at different times. No centuries of warnings like from natural sources like the ones you mention.

E.L.F. (Extremely Low Frequency) sonar is now aboard every U.S. Navy ship and is no longer used just for detection or communication. Now it is being used as a weapon. Most alarming is the fact that the U.S.Navy's E.I.S. which has been approved (April 13th 2009) allows the Navy to "take" as many as 125,000 marine mammals a year through training with this system just in the Pacific Northwest.

To all you pro SONAR guys out there, I have one thing to say to you......RIGHT ON!!! I myself was once a STG. We do limit the use of our our SONAR beyond all belief. In all my years as a SONAR Tech I went active about three times. THAT'S IT!! Clearly these people have no clue that North Korea has one of the largest sub fleets in the world. The fact that I do not agree with SONAR practices occuring in so close proximity to cetaceans that it kills them, does not make me a tree hugger. Other coutnries do have subs too, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't take precautions in using them around marine mammals. Many of these animals are endangered and the excruciatingly loud sound is often behind mass strandings.

Sonar is also used to detect drug runner boats that surface radar can barely pick up, so it also benefits your kids in a way...right? And the US mililary is the only one with sonar regulations...you're forgetting foreign countries that have none...so what about them?

It is used in a limited manner, we have to request to go active and post watches to look out for any marine life. So yes, it is limited; unlike other countries. If the damage outweighs the benefit, why are other countries making more advanced submarines that cannot be detected without powerful sonar? As far as the drug runners go...I went on a drug-ops deployment 2 years ago, and we seized 25 tons of COCAINE. So whos argument is flawed now? I strongly encourage you to research these matters

Mr.gung-ho navy listens and listened for over 15 years, approx 12,000 hours. If you know someone with more experience, bring them forward. The loudest sound I ever recorded was a blue whale off the coast of Australia in 1968. The loudest sustained sound was a rain squall in Hawaii in 1973. There are sonars that have the potential of causing damage to marine animals. There are far more humans with the same potential. Perhaps you could provide a solution that addresses both issues.

US Navy has regulations about transmitting close to shore, it cannot be transmitted within about 10 miles from the coast. So the chances of that being from sonar is unlikely. And there is no valid evidence that says the 152 dolphins died from US Sonar.

It's intresting to see the dB can be so high in the water. Highest possible dB in air is 190dB. A cannon fire is at 180dB and well, if any humans listening to that sound they go deaf at an instance, so think what 235dB can do... Don't even wanna think about it.
