  • so how much would one of those cost these days?

  • It all depends on the condition you can buy new ones as well which are kind of pricey but on the other hand you get a guranteed working machine...I bought my first one in more or less perfect condition for 25 000 kr with four tape frames. The second one I bought was for 10 000 kr with two frames so there are still bargains to be made you just have to look where noone else is...

...or you can rent some time in a studio that has one...

  • so.. whatever does happen when the 8 seconds run out? Does it just stop? or does the tape actually rip if you hold it too long?

  • It just stops with often a slightly weird sound. Listen to the end of Oasis track Wonderwall.

  • How do you have different patches?

  • I have nine or ten tape frames with three to four sounds on every frame. It takes 2- 3 minutes to chenge the tape frames.

  • There's hundreds of recorded tape tracks in the machine, when you push a key, the track plays. It's really pretty simple.

  • There is one tape per key...so it isn't "hundreds" but 35. Best regards,

    Mattias

  • That is the most haunting sound ever...even more so than mellotron strings.

  • You should hear the wineglasses.

  • If you check the Roth Handle site it states that they have merely two M400s, about 40 sounds, an Orchestron, Optigan, Rhythmate, Talentmaker, Benny Anderssons GX-1 et.c et.c

    Bastards.

  • This is not a mk II. The mk II had 2 keyboards and was much larger. This is either an M400 or an mk VI (they look identical. the mk IV is the new version of the M400).

  • the precursor to the digital sampler. the mellotron used these strips of anolog tape that came in contact with a tape head when a key was pressed down. it also wasn't looped so you'd have to let the key up so the tape could snap back to it's starting position after 7-8 seconds. talk about high maintenance! and i think they weigh in around 400 pounds (?) but nothing sounds like a mellotron (with that mid-rangy distortion and fast attack.)

  • They are pretty darn great, but I enjoy a good Chicken Sizlar now and then as well...

Have you checked out the other film snippets ?

  • yes, but the problem is they are for some reason ALWAYS snippets! I want someone (like me) to have a mellotron so they can show ever one! The insturment is still shrouded in mystery for me.

  • Mellotrons are the greatest thing ever. It even beats food.

  • I agree, Andrew! I would starve a little for a tron, wouldn't you? Oh - do you like Gentle Giant? The record "The Power And The Glory" is fantastic.

  • I would love to see a film of someone playing the Mellotron with the MK II brass section...

  • how does it work
