I love tony.. I can listen to a cut he did a thousand times and hear some thing new every time...What an innovator miles said a drummer like him comes around once in a life time...I think the next life time guy is here in the form of Chris Dave. A guy who spent a good deal of time studying Tony and yet he sounds nothing like him. Check him out and see what you think
I seen this band just few days later this video was made , they were in Pompei jazz festival , Naples , Italy . Before them , 1st set there was playing CArmen Mc Rae and his trio !!! All around the magic atmosphere of the ancient ruines since the volcano eruption 79 a.c . No wonder this has been one of the best jazz-night ever in my life !
as much as i like jazz and you can trace my comments, there is a beauty that comes with experiencing the divinity of Jesus that is unparalleled on any level.
I was so into drumming when I finally got to see Tony in 1982. After the performance, I realized that as much as I was practicing, I would have to quadruple it to even be 1/25th the drummer he was. I've seen Rich, Bellson, others but nobody was as good as Tony, imo!
Yeah, I've seen some "MFers"... Buddy, Peart, Bozzio, Colaiuta, Cobham... and none are quite like him.
The music itself is the stuff swirling inside the tight vortex of a tornado that IS Tony Williams' power. That's what made him unique and why he still exists in the minds and hearts of the best drummers in this world.
Go to see every musician you can. Get the money from somewhere. Do without something if you have to, to go hear these wonderful musicians while they are still here . Take your little kids, like my Dad did when I was ten. I went to see Art Farmer and Oscar Peterson on two different occasions at Yoshi's, with the grocery money!Just go! Support jazz bands in your schools.
In every form of life be it religion, politics or arts, man has made sacrifices to make the world a better place. All these great men have done so sometimes to the cost of their own lives on this planet .Let us never forget them .
@foolaloof1 not sure what you mean by your comment, but I'm guessing you are one of those cats who just hear notes and rhythms. Clearly Jazz is not for you.
I didn't have to die to be in heaven. I came up hangin' at Keystone Korner, Kimball's, Yoshi's, Kuubmwa and the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society as well as Fillmore and Winterland.
So glad that I walked on this planet at the same time as these masters.
I hope there is a heaven and jazz clubs and gigs. Let's hope that we're all fortunate to get there too because I know where I'll be every night. Miles, Coltrane, Mingus, Tony and Bill Evans playing their asses off! Now that's what i'm talking about!
tks for sharing, druman44... it is very disturbing to know that FH has now a broken lip... and that JH and TW have passed away... but we should be happy that KB and RC are still with us!

Jazz on the highest level. Tony was such a beast.

First 10 seconds of Freddie's solo is intense. So is the piano comping behind it!
jazzmangiant 3 years ago
Ron Carter sounds so electric...typical 70ies and 80ies...but I dig it. And Tony's little solo is a terrific statement...how elegant!

This comment has received too many negative votes show

Hey druman44
thanks for the vid.
That first google link is brilliant also! The more I see this stuff the more aware I become of the influence TW had on modern drummers everywhere.

Your telling the wrong folks here Mamasan. Try telling this to people who don't listen to jazz or art music and see what they're reaction is.
Art has been integrated into the web of utility, unfortunately.
Peace.
