in my NY CDL manual it states "the air leakage rate for a combination vehicle engine off, brakes off should be less than 3 psi per minute" in the video he said "4 psi"...which is correct?
He also forgot to mention registration and inspection stickers on both the truck and trailer. I believe he did forget to mention the Fifth Wheel and that the shank around the Kingpin needs to secure and release arm needs to be secure. If it is a sliding tandum, make sure the pins are secured and in place. He also didn't inspect the front of the truck to see if it was leaning to one side or look under the truck for leaks. Check damage to landing gear too. We all forget something. Still a good job
when I took the written test the correct answer I end up for airbrakes on bus and strait truck, no more than 2 PSI in one minuts for combination no more than 3 PSI in one minuts
I passed my CDL tests, this was definately one of the toughest areas. i have some stuff that helped me study for the tests. Email me at Schecter860 @yahoo.com or message me on youtube and ill help you figure out some of the answers to help you study for your upcoming CDL tests.

he's a good teacher and inspector cuz most trucks i see they look like they are fallin apart parts all dented in steps fallin off its some pretty scary stuff
Here's a tip; before you even enter the door to do all your tests, and training; go out with an actual driver for a few day's; but do make sure you befriend him, so he doesnt mind showing you the basic things on what to do/ not do :P
My D.L. has been suspended for a number of years and I recently got it back. Before it was suspended I was studying for my CDL A. Do the 5 points on it hurt my chances of getting my CDL? I know this is what I want to do as a career. Thanx.
i got my class A today the pre trip is the easiest part the best way to do it is use common sense and everything you can see check it over and make sure its in good condition in correlation with the truck
depending on the state, for example, i am on Tennessee, we have to check the 5th wheel, if it is a sliding 5th wheel, check to ensure the bolts are intact, none missing or damaged. we have to visually inspect the jaws to ensure they are locked, and to check the 5th wheel release handle and the internal/external safety. we also have to check the inside lights during the cab inspection, the directional signals and bright light and ABS indicator in addition to the light check. good pretrip though.
He said check the springs on the truck suspintion but never said check the air bags hmmm guess thier not important but when one blows you will know it
he didnt mention to check the rear brakes you need to chock the wheels and cancel spring brakes. those of you who think you dont have to do pre-trip & post trip inspecs are in for a rude awakening when you try to get your lic and will be a danger on the road once you are driving. those bozos are the ones you see broke down on the side of a hwy all the time..
didn't you just say the same thing in a few other videos??? i'm pretty sure anyone that is planning on taking their CDL tests, already knows that they will have to perform a pre, and possibly a post trip inspection.
Pretty good run through.Make sure 5th wheel setting is correct for load and locks are set.Check 5th wheel crotch to make sure slide lock is holding jaw shut. When you first move truck, yank on trolley.Better to drop trailer in yard than on road.DOT puts drivers in same category as pilots because both professions involve general public.Every see a pilot get in a plane and just take off?You don't get paid for pre/post trips because it is part of the job. Some drivers are their own worst enemies.
Hey Vern, Why didn't you crawl down in the dirt and check the slack adjusters, hose?, brake shoes, chambers, and drums, HHMMM! Also on the 52 point pre trip inspection, you as a driver should also grease the tractor, change the filters, change the oil,fix any electical issues, and wash the unit for good measure since you are going to have a ton of free time for such things. Oh, bye the way,you can do all of this for free, because 95% of trucking companies won't pay you for pre-trip inspecs. thank u
hes at a training school. your not required to do any of the such to pass the pretrip (in cab ) inspection. Dylanwinter , i really appreciate the help video. i am in TDI training ( starting my 3rd week now) and these 3 pretrip videos really help! thank you very much for posting it.
@kennysteam1 it means Commercial Drivers Licence. and yes it is. it is for any vehicle that has a GVWR of above 26000 lbs. and has air brakes. there are 3 classes each for different size vehicles. A is for articulated vehicles and B and C are for rigid vehicles. there are also sever different endorsements you can get to haul certain loads
I have my CDL in Wisconsin there were very few things missed that would've gotten you docked points on your test here. Excellent example of a pre-trip though, very well done! If this guy teaches actual driving as well as he demonstrates a pre-trip, his students are in good shape!
im sure he didnt miss it, it just wasnt in the video like other things such as dipping engine oil, transmission oil, coolant. Checkin the filters, draining the air tanks, checkin the condenser in the fuel system, water level, fuel, grease nipples and grease points etc etc...
MAn, he was very specific. But if you did all that crap every single time you went out. You'd spend more than half an hour just checking crap. It's not like a truck just breaks over night. I usually inspect my rig once a week.
very through but each air brake test you do you have to tell the instructor what test you are doing there are 4 of them. air pressure build up, test air leckage rate, test low pressure warning siginal and check air compressor governer cut in/out
These video's are great but he did miss a couple of minor things. Check your trailer brakes by pulling down the trolly and pulling forward. This step will also confirm that the trailer is securely connected to the 5th wheel. Other than that... GREAT JOB!!
If it is not in the study guide (pre trip section) for the state in which you are testing don't worry about it. Anyway they are'nt usually on newer tractor models
@dylanwinter1 I tend to start daydreaming since he is just talking in a monotone voice about 100 different things nonstop. I teach programming classes and I stop to make sure the students are with me and explain the importance of certain things so that they will understand that it is something you really need to know.
