Rush kicks so much ass, this sometimes injures their feet. As a result, they often need to go to a podiatrist. He begs them to stop kicking ass, but they will not relent. They keep it up, leading to larger and larger podiatrist bills. The need for all of that money to pay the podiatrist makes them practice harder so they can play more shows. Playing more shows makes them better and better.

Now you know why Rush is so fucking awesome.

andytom, NP explained the lyrics in an interview on Rockline back in 90 or 91. I believe that first line was inspired by an episode of Nova. A picture book of the rivers under the Sahara refer to the fact that the Sahara Desert used to be a tropical rainforest. And so on and so on.

Furthermore, all three have nicknames that have been used ever since Hemispheres, I think.
