  • Nina Stemme is the greatest Isolde, . Awesome!

  • Simplemente maravillosa.

  • Stemme is a goddess, although she tends to come in a little too early often. Heaven help us that Voigt is doing Brunhilde in Gotterdamerrung here in NYC in a few short weeks. God I had hoped that Voigt would come down with *something* and Stemme would take her place. Oh well.

  • Muchas gracias por compartirlo.

  • @Turand0t OK yes true, but also Wagner was a total anti-semite. just throwing it out there.

  • Why do people only remember Hitler liked Wagner, but NOBODY remembers Thomas Mann, the anti-fascist BAMF writer, was an even bigger fan?

Nina is simply wonderful. Can't wait to see her do all Brünnhildes, preferably on dvd too.

A lot of emotion in this interpretation.

  • puissant mais un peu "tremblotant". Réécoutez Birgit Nilsson: la pureté ET la puissance.

  • Horrible singing...! bad actress also...She have to sings Mozart or Puccini...never Wagner...horror for Wagner...

  • HOLY shit! Her acting is INTENSE!!!

  • oh my!! WALTRAUD MEIER AND NINA STEMME: MY FAVORITES!!

  • @BenjaminWagnerFan -The two very best ever after perhaps FLAGSTADT and Nllsson.

  • @paulostroff99 youre right, i must admit it, but dont forget ASTRID VARNAY, she was among the two you mentioned, besides i was talking about current wagner sopranos, not sopranos from the past, stemme and meier are my current favorite wagner sopranos, but of course i love nilsson, flagstad and varnay.

  • @BenjaminWagnerFan -Then you have great taste my friend .

  • Astrid Varnay.was of course up there with the very best.

  • People who always talk that Hitler liked Wagner's music and, because of this, his music is bad, are people incapable of thinking with their own brain. This piece is absolutely FANTASTIC, as is Nina Stemme.

  • Obama likes Wagner!

  • Totally fab this is! I just wish there were subtitles. Agree with other posters-- NIna was amazing in the SF Opera Ring. I saw the third cycle too- amazing. I love this voice. Thanks for sharing this gorgeous video. I hope she comes back to San Francisco! (((Nina come back!!!!)))

  • just saw the 3rd cycle of The Ring -SF Opera and Nina Stemme was PHENOMENAL!! She brought me to tears @ the end of Gotterdaemmerung-OMG she brought the house down-I've never heard such a sustained roar from the audience-every single one of us were on our feet -she is soooo awesome!!

  • @sanibelSF Oh, god! I saw it, too. If I didn't love opera so much, I'd never see anything else in my life. The whole cast was perfect. Nina Stemme has her throne in Heaven on this Ring cycle alone.

  • Actually Hitler liked petit bourgeois schlock/sloppy sentimental music, and his favorite composer was Franz Lehár. And btw, he was vegetarian and loved dogs. So does that mean....

  • Nina Stemme was nothing short of phenomenal playing Brunhilde in San Francisco's ring cycle 2011. The full richness of your voice through all ranges is a wonder -- Nina's voice is the Gold in this opera of operas.

  • Nina Stemme is the real thing! Just heard her complete 1st Ring Cycle at SF Opera today. She was nothing less than incandescent. What an Immolation Scene!

A Brunnhilde for the ages! Majestic, powerful, absolutely resplendent in every way.

  • Anything Dramatic is her aria.... beautiful

  • She is simply the best today!

  • Not that it impacts the performance, but she has a very beautiful face. A very handsome lady indeed.

  • .........NINA, call me on my cell. I need to see you. It's about when we had coffee in Paris. I think I left my wallet at your apartment. Keep the money but I need the irreplacable photos. Thanks.

  • Utterly resplendent singing...as usual.

  • Just unbelievable. She is so EFFORTLESS. There is no "digging in" that you see in some Wagnerians - her voice just sits on top of her breath so beautifully. Brava.

  • Gorgeous, beautiful Wagnerian singing--this doesn't happen too often. The only other person I know who didn't sound like a shrill termagant when singing Wagner was Eileen Farrell. Thanks for posting this.

  • what a voice sublime, divine

  • who's dressing? looks like Bram Stoker's Dracula in Blue ..but her voice es awesome!!

  • Awesome! TY for posting.

  • SOW BEUTIFULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • TRY TO GET ENGLISH TRANSLATION,this is truly, absolutely the most incredible love song ever written, sensual, and spiritual to death, literally, highest of all love

  • Stunning performance, and the music stands by itself. That said, Wagner's notorious anti-semitism was a source of inspiration for Hitler who worshipped the composer.

  • @FunkDashi That's exactly the same logic used to ban Catcher and the Rye...it's so ridiculous. Wagner was an anti-semite. It's not okay, he was wrong and anti-semitism like any form of hate is evil. Many people of high virtue have been inspired by Wagner as well as those of terrible conscience, even evil men like Hitler...it is pointless to even mention Hitler worshipped him...Wagner was long dead when Hitler became a fan.

  • @it's more important to ask whether Wagner's music encounters the same problems of hate. I don't think Barenboim would be a conductor of Wagner--or Levine for that matter--if that were the case...

Perfeita!

  • I'm a singer and I still don't understand how so much sound can come from one person! A truly fantastic interpretation!

  • I'm certainly no expert, but I know what I like. I liked this a lot.

  • pure awesomesauce!!!11

  • Wagner is made of pure win and awesomeness!!!

  • i can only describe this voice as totally satisfying to listen to , her breadth of tone , power and control is incredibly beautiful .

  • Mama mia! What a voice..... what an orchestra... what a dress!!! Nina Stemme is sublime and was borne to sing Wagner... HEAVEN!

  • Grandiose, stupenduous!

  • mr brady, were you in the SS?

  • Isolde - Liebestod can only be performed by Waltraud Meier, only she can bring Isolde to the gods with her voice, sorry but this performance is lacking

  • what an orgazmic voice and music at 4:39

  • @Goktata

In French, "orgasm" is called "la petite mort" (Little Death)...

  • una meraviglia...

  • Absolutely beautiful.. The way it is meant to sound. Wagner would be proud.

  • Having heard this in reality this gives me goose pimples! Heavenly, heartbreaking. This is what art is all about.

  • Es war wirklich Wagner!!!

  • BalinSilay,

I had a sister who also loved Wagner, especially Tristan und Isolde. She would also have loved YouTube.

  • Wonderful -- Stemme is great!

  • She has the rarest gift that only a few divas possess. For her it doesn't seem enough to serve beautiful and tragic music, nor to be a great actress. Nina Stemme's presence communicates to even novices at the opera, "Hey, watch and listen, this stuff is a kick!"

  • Simply the Best!

  • One of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos around - its just effortless. It's difficult to imagine a better fit and I love her in this repertoire. I don't understand why she does the lyric roles of Strauss though - the voice is far too big and inflexible for Arabella, the Countess and the Marschallin.

  • my God she IS Isolde!

  • @GustavvonA , and Meier too

  • ......Wonderful performance!........Nina, call me. Come over and we'll have coffee....and later we will drive up in the mountains which you loved so much when you visited before.

  • Bless her! She is fantastic!

  • My dad used to play this music at night, it would fill the whole house like the orchestra was playing "live" in there & he tells us it is bedtime. I obediently go to bed but wonder to myself how in the world can I sleep with this forceful music? After a few times of this, the summer nights seemed to be missing its flavor without Wagner. All of us children got used to it & wait for magical hours of Wagner. My father would have enjoyed You Tube!

  • @BalinSilay Did you ever find out what soprano was singing the Liebestod or was your dad just playing an LP of the orchestral version ? What conductor and orchestra ? I love this music so much too and I agree it works a magic spell especially at night; the whole final part of the opera is set at night, the time when Tristan and Isolde were happy and engaging in their lovemaking.

  • @AmericanEvita Hello! My dad played all the heavy-duty operas & now am not sure who the soprano was in his collection. He loved Wagner & Mahler. He had many operas & some of my favorite artists were Marian Anderson, Birgit Nilsson, Nikolai Gedda (he was perfect in Faust!). I still wonder how Wagner created music so out of this world....My dad played his beautiful music late at night so everything is heard without the sounds that the daytime has. Thank you

  • @BalinSilay nice narration, I can even imagine the picture of it. Your father must have been a strong and grand figure. Reminds me to my grandpa...

  • @PatagonianWarrior Tell me about your grandpa...My dad would play so much music...he would play the complete opera of Madam Butterfly and I loved it. Then switch gears to Porgy and Bess. Then complete Giselle (ballet) and oh, the piano concertos and symphonies! Life is nothing without music, you know this. Thank you for your comment!

  • One Word.... Unbelievable :)))

  • Poor acoustics, but indeed a wonderful interpretation. So simple, confident and powerful.

  • Awesome

  • Never in my entire life will I forget her Isolde. Sheer perfection. It makes you grateful to be alive.

  • The voice is incredibly beautiful.

  • Currently the BEST all around Isolde. Not since Flagstad, Nilsson and Varnay has there been such a perfect Isolde. Nina Stemme sings with a grand, majestic air and yet has the youthful bloom and princess quality needed or Isolde. Her best performance is captured in the CD album of Tristan and Isolde with Placido Domingo as Tristan. She is perfect, brilliant and magnificent! This is the best Liebestod I have heard in a long time.

  • fabulous

  • She's wonderful. Can't wait to see her in all three Brünnhilde roles.

  • She is good, as well as Waltraud Meier's version in Munich, which is perfect.

The best full version so far, I believe would still be Boehm's version on Bayreuth Festival in 1966.

  • Absolutely astonishing and she achieves to make one cry. This is the real sense of Wagner's music, to express the absolute human feelings.

  • Just absolutely magnificent!

  • Wow.. this is so tremulous.. She is not the 21st century's answer to Flagstad

  • Stemme is an incredible artist! I have seen her in Ariadne, Hollander, and Tristan. I don't understand what the animosity is about, but obviously someone does not know technique or singers well. Enough said!!!

  • @williamsagency You are so right! Too many "experts" around! She's fantastic! Just heard her in Vienna as Senta! Wonderful!

  • I saw all three. Which one did you see?

  • MAGNIFICENT! Spellbinding rendition of this very dramatic aria. Ms. Stemme is a great artist. flufrules

  • Tons of vibrato.. actually tremulo and that indicates strain.. I hate the sound hate it.

  • It´s your problem!!

  • She can't sing.. She has pitch issues too.

  • @kgarmaker123 i think the pitch issues are actually your issues, and yours alone.

  • No .. they aren/t she is not relaxed.. she is missing pitches.. its sloppy singing. to think someone compared her to Birgit Nilsson.. wow.. no comparison.

  • She is an operasinger that's why she sings. Please stay at your job and do it as well as she does singing. It is so boring to criticise the others all the time. And to refer to singers all the time who have been dead for decades is not fair!!!

  • Listen this woman would have nothing to do if ite weren't for people just like me who pay to hear people like her.. Thank God when faced with the choice of hearing her in Strauss at the Met in Feb, I chose to Hear Florez and Damrau at the Met.. At least Florez can sing. So how about you sit down and be quiet yourself. She is an awful opera singer. And she won;t sing for long with that technique.

  • She has been singing for seventeen years as a professional singer...and she is on her top now...you should start thinking about your quick judgement!

  • Yeah Florez can sing and there are many others who can. Once more...why don't you keep your cheap comments to yourself and see her once and don't judge real living artists behind your desk?

  • Why bother? I have liistened to a lot of her on U tube, and I find her technique lacking... She is not the singer she is made out to be. I wont be buying any of her Cd's either.

  • That's the problem that you judge according to what you hear on youtube. That is bothering. Don't buy, others will buy!

  • @kgarmaker123 Have you actually seen anything with Nina Stemme. I saw her Ariadne at the Met last month. She not only turned in a terrific dramatic performance, but a gorgeous vocal performance. She was on pitch throughout; the person next to me (who received a Ph.D from Harvard on Strauss's music) commented on how few opera singers sang Ariadne as well as Stemme did.

  • WEll Mr. Smelly, interesting that you should say that.. as if you saw my previous comments.. you will note, that I was in NYC, for days and could have heard, her.. so... I turned to U tube and listened to much of her on here, and decided after hearing her vocal technique, etc.. on many examples.. that would not go.. Instead I heard Damrau and Florez.. I passed her up, even though i have the money to attend several opera perfomances.. Bad singer with bad technique.

  • @kgarmaker123 You can't truly judge an opera singer's ability on Youtube, as opposed to on stage for you might see a play that you enjoy in the theater and despise on Youtube. I frankly don't care if you have money to attend 100 operas and I don't see why you'd bring that up. I saw you went to NYC, but you seem to be judging with no real knowledge of her work.

Could you explain, in greater detail, what you think is wrong with Stemme so we can see if you actually know opera or are bullcrapping.

  • @llamasaresmelly

Dr. Mr. Smelly... Is this some kind of test???? If you will look at my previous comments, they were all about her vocal technique, and her lack of correct intonation and pitch. The only one bullshitting anyone, is you.... as all you do is assert she is great.. I have listened and I do not agree!

  • Yeah, listened at home while knitting. Anyway people judge singers in general what they can hear on stage not what you can hear on youtube. And that pitch and intonation problem is simply ridiculous. Why don't you buy a studio recording by singers who have been dead for half decade and listen to it hundred of times OR buy a machine that will play you exactly the same all the time???

  • That is simply ridiculous!!!

  • 10 out of 10 for the singing- she must have drunk the same water as Birgit- and 10 out of 10 for the cloak! Nice to see a Diva who knows how to dress onstage for once.

  • The orchestra is too loud. I can't hear the singer.

  • I loved Stemme's Isolde at both Stockholm and Bayrueth so was utterly amazed at seeing her first ARABELLA a few years ago in Gothenburg. Absolutely gorgeous, brilliant.

She is an amazing artist and a charmin person.

  • Orgasmic, I could listen to this music again and again...

  • Oh my; Wunderbar! Orgasm for the ears! I saw her Ariadne at the Met this month and she was wonderful. I'm lookin forward to the broadcast of Ariadne in 2 hours.

  • ...NINA, if you are reading this, please quit calling me. I am a confirmed recluse. I do, however, think you are incredible. Maybe in a few months.

  • Just saw her in Ariadne auf Naxos on Thursday night at the Met. Transformative experience. She is a goddess!

  • Sorry, but do you got ears?

  • Love Nina Stemme! Seen her perform 4 times. What a voice and what a performer! xx

  • Clearly, the Isolde of our time.

  • Very good rendition overall. However I found the tempo a little too fast in places. The best version in my opinion is karajans version with jessye Norman

  • @saly10 it's hard to go wrong with HvK and Jessye Norman :) My personal favourite, however, is Waltraud Meier in Munich

  • maybe it was the angle but in the karajan/norman video it looks like he is literally pulling the music out of her - and they are locked in a dance. Nina is out there ,in her own world - i love her big-eyed stare - one could easily believe she is in the love drug stupor.

  • ....If I ever find out who gave Nina my phone number....there will be trouble to pay!!..........

  • I would be happy if Nina once called me and invited me for a caffee:)))

  • Longest train ever.

  • @UABOOTMM1

In my opinion, she is young and have a beautifull vibrato, and yet her voice is hundred of times cleaner and prettier than the Nilsson voice...

  • ESPECTACULAR!!!

  • She is beautiful and extraordinary singer wagneriana

  • Opino igual, lo mejor desde Flagstad.

    Thanks.

  • Now I want to learn German...

  • *****The best I have ever heard since Kirsten Flagstad 70 years ago on a recording. Simply unreachable facility of lustruous tone and perfection of execution.*****

  • @cubanbach I agree with you, she's perfect

  • @cubanbach The Nazis' perfection of execution was probably more effective.

  • @Rochey93 Why are you talking about Nazi's? It's not Wagners fault that Hitler liked his music... It's blasphemy to even mention nazi's when Nina Stemme is bringing this wonderful music to life for us.

  • @Turand0t Dw, just one of those stupid YouTube throw-away comments.

So, as the name suggests, please throw my comment away. Happy listening :)

  • @Turand0t do you know where your name comes from? probably took it from the etruscan goddess of love, did you know? Turan

Ya, people look too much how express hate instead of loving the grace and beauty we have to give to each other. What this opera is about, in fact eh?

  • @gwirgalon Hmmm... No, I didn't know, but I checked it now. Maybe the name was taken from there, but Turandot from Puccini's opera by the same name was, as you probably know, an icecold princess until Calaf melted her heart. :)

  • @Turand0t well said !

  • @Turand0t

Wasn't Wagner's "anti-semitism" more like a dumb religious conviction (i.e. Christians are better than Jews), and less of an evil bigotry thing, anyway?

  • @twooffour We understand the idealism and politics.

But music is not idealism, it's just mind and emotion and this is above the rest.

    Thankfully.

  • @twooffour Wagners antisemitism was based on his conviction that 'immigrant' cultures (ie: the Jews) were incapable of cultural authenticity, that they lacked the cultural homogeneity to produce anything except malformed and decadent art. Wagner was a racist, but he was also an adulterer, who used his friends to the point of bleeding them dry and steeling their wives. Not a nice man but a cultural giant. He certainly had no Christian virtues or authentic beliefs for that matter.

  • @Paulkazey1 well, Wagner's operas aren't homogeneous, so he was stupid in that regard. The whole concept of tetralogy comes from Greek, and a lot of the prosody he achieves in the libretto of the Ring is based on Greek tragedy (I can see choriambs and dactyls whenever I listen)--not to mention the fact that he had French influences and was composing opera--an Italian invention. So cultural authenticity is not a feature of his works, and that's a good thing. it'd be much more boring, if it were.

  • @Turand0t OF COURSE,GERMAN MUSIC IS ABOVE ALL,AND FANTASTIC,they are great builders, thinkers, architects, ect,AND THEIR GREATNESS DOES HAVE THE DARK SIDE OF THOSE WHO PROBE THE INFINITE,in our terms,as then, wagner was pretty much a scoundrel, wretchedly predjudiced, vain worse than any woman,YET,THERE IS HOPE FOLKS,GOD REDEEMED HIM WITH HIS UNBELIEVABLE,COSMIC,HEAVENLY TIMELESS,AND BEAUTIFUL BEYOND WORDS MUSIC,THERE IS HOPE FOR ALL,AMEN,AND AMEN

  • @Turand0t always same shit! Wagner died 50 years before Hilter born!! agree 100% is blasphemy mention nazis when sounds Wagner, mme.Stemme is awesome!!

  • @Turand0t +1

  • @Turand0t Wagner had a Jewish accountant or something similar. He was anti-semitic, but so was everyone else at that time. To fail to acknowledge Wagner's greatness on account of his time is comparable to hating Love for Three Oranges because of its racist implications.

  • @Turand0t I as a German am FED UP with this American fascination with Hitler. Keep it to our sick selves!

  • @MrThesheenster Probable because Wagner and his music will always be connected to Hitler's regime, in more than a few ways. The degree of connection can be debated, but that connect is a fact. Besides, fascination isn't a negative.

The genius behind such amazing music makes Wagner interesting, but the influence of his fascist and anti-Semite views on Hitler remain fascinating.

  • @Turand0t I as a German am FED UP with this American fascination with Hitler. Keep it to our sick selves! He seems to be a US icon now!?

  • I don't know anyone who can sing Wagner today so perfect and so expressive!!!!

  • Waltraud Meier, too

  • @rtivelle I actually don't hear any strain. It's a very prominent vibrato, yes, but I dont hear strain. It sounds very free to me. However, I do think this song and the meaning of it requires more of an ease (that Nilsson provides). Isolde has just suffered the biggest heartache ever, yet there is so much joy and painlessness in the song that is really not conveyed by her. I think the constant vibrato (and slightly faster tempo) create a sense of urgency that i dont like.

  • Sublime, elevado. Música superior

  • Das lässt sich einrichten. Zu mir oder zu dir? ;)

  • Magnificent

  • You have to adore a woman who not only has the voice of a goddess but dares to dress like Nosferatu. That's what being a true diva is all about.

  • Belle voix, mais je préfère Jessye Norman

  • Flagstad, Nilsson, Varnay, Stemme all daughters of the Vikings. Voices commensurate with the scope and grandiosity of the epic tales and mythologies of their ancestors. This gal sends me. Arguably the finest Isolde in the world today. My love, La Stemme!

  • She is beautifulul and her voice is massive, With the right director no question she can act the part. Saw her last night in London - Isolde- she needs no electronic enhancement or amplification.

  • Holy Sh*t, she must have a trachea the size of a 19th C traction engine!!

Although in all seriousness, I haven't heard singing this wonderful in a long, long time...

...she does looks a bit like one of the Emperor's Guard when she walks off at the end though ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • C'est LE Liebestod! Isolde parfaite. Belle et expressive au max. Elle me fait pleurer....

    Phil

  • when all else fails we must rely on Beauty!!!
