@omkhan Islam does mandate cutting the genitals of infants, or young boys to remove healthy tissue and some scholars of Sunni islam considered the removal of the clitoral hood to be mandatory, others considered it merely recommended, as female circumcision is mentioned in the hadith. It would not be a clitorectomy, but it would still inflict pain and bleeding on young girls.

I work in the medical field, I have seen more patients who are circumcised than not, young and old. Then again, the proof is out there on respectable academically credited sites.

4:89(an-Nisa'): this verse is not referring to unbelievers but hypocrites or those who fled during the war (cowards). u hv to remember tht like english, one word in arabic can hv different meanings in different contexts.
9:5- this verse shld be read in its whole context. not just the verse. again, this is abt the war during the prophet's time.

1. She assumes her own life experience is Islam, taking away that the miserable life she had is a result of her own people tradition and customs.

Azar Nafisi is actually such an intelligent woman. She is a lot more intelligent than Ayaan, and her speeches on radical Islam, democracy, etc., are a lot more profound and thought-provoking than the simple ideas Ayaan Hirsi Ali proposes in her speeches or interviews. Ayaan really gives such a simple portrayal of Islam that has no depth or sophistication. Anyone can say the things she says, it doesn't make her special.

Many moderates choose to interpret jihad as a personal struggle, but that is clearly not the exclusive application of the word in the Koran or for many Muslims today. She's being honest about the Islam she grew up in, which is by no means fringe. She was well-educated in her faith as a child and can read the Koran in Arabic. She knows.

I am so disappointed in the discussions about Islam. We pigeon-hole Islam as if it cannot naturally evolve. Paper, wheel power, explosives are all ideas manifest through human labor (will), but they all look different from their invention state. We let Democracy, Christianity and Capitolism have all changed, but we do not delegitimize those evolutions because they are not as austere as they were once. This is what Ali and other do with Islam. A pity.
