It idled pretty good right from the beginning. But I have had to take the carb apart in the past. Usually it was the bowl that was sticking allowing the gas to keep flowing without stopping. There are adjustments on the carb for the idle, I guess you have found them. If not, get a new carb on ebay, they are pretty cheap. Make sure the carb to manifold pipe to engine are tight and leak free.
