can someone explain the comment about a snaffle? Is that not normal? what are jumping horses usually in? Sorry, I'm just new to horses and trying to learn everything possible!!!

@bronzekite A snaffle is a kind of bit. I'm pretty sure it's the kind of bit riding school horses use and I'm guessing showjumpers would use a stronger one? I'm not totally experienced either but most of the ponies and horses I ride and ridden with a snaffle (:

@OMFGItsCaitlin The horse that I own is used for lessons, and we usually let them ride with a stronger bit since he doesn’t listen to beginner riders often. But I ride and jump him in a snaffle. So I guess it just depend on the horse

@bronzekite A snaffle is one of the most basic, kindest bits you can use on a horse. It just shows that this horse either has a soft mouth and is responsive and doesn't pull his rider's arms out of their sockets!

Some horses uses different bits such as pelhams for example as it's harsher and apllies more pressure in different areas so as to be more effective. And some horses have what's called a hackamore which has no bit at all.

You'll never know everything about horses but its fun trying!!

@babzisamazen Don't assume people are jealous. I don't like this video because it's an unecessary risk to the horse (and the rider, though he had the choice to do it) for the sake of a bit of glory. Do you honestly believe that a horse wouldn't do something it doesn't want to? If that was the case you wouldn't have to break them in. All of riding involves getting a horse to act against its nature. Oh, and to others on here: tail swishing is not a sign of happiness.

@AmalamCooper Do you ride? Because I have ridden for 10 years and if a horse doesn't want to jump, it won't. At the end of the day they are bigger and stronger than us and don't have to do what we want at all. The top comment would be that the horse is in a snaffle. Do you know what a snaffle is? Did you notice he doesn't even touch the horse with his crop? That horse could easily refuse. Do you know what that is? Horses refuse a lot. And tail swishing is also a sign of excitement. Idiot.

@frumples143 Yes I ride. I'm also studying a degree in this stuff meaning I've read books and research papers to find out what the actual facts are. A horse can refuse, but that doesn't mean every time it doesn't it wanted to jump. It'd much rather be in the feild eating and pooping. Tail swishing is a sign of annoyance and distress. They are bigger and stronger than us but they're also conditioned to behave against their nature from a very young age.

It's not like they kill them after that. It's not cruel. The horse would have refused if he thought he was going to hurt himself. Horses are bread for this. It's what they do. They're bones are much bigger than the average jumping horse, an can handle much more pressed..

It's awesome, but I hate people risking their horses breaking something, just to break a record. ... Those jumps are pretty dangerous for rider and horse and I don't think that it's good for the horses joints.

However really good horse & rider, but too dangerous and a bit damn stupid .. (my opinion.)

@MsLizzable Yeah I agree. People say "oh the horse loves it" but I'm sure if the horse could understand how much of a diaster that jump going wrong would be it would say "no way!" It's not worth it and if you really cared about horses you'd be able to understand that. When we do reckless things we are able to make well-informed decisions, animals are not. This could have gone the way it did, or horribly, horribly wrong.

@IloveDotti I completely disagree. If that were the case, how did Shutterfly retire SOUND at age 18, and Beezie Madden's ride, Judgement, also retired to stud duty at age 18. Both of these horses were in Grand Prix competition for many years, and competed their whole lives. People who compete in Puissance classes do not jump the height every time they school, in fact, I bet they never do. One jump won't kill the legs, they are very well taken care of, or the horses wouldn't last that long.
