The other advice I'd offer you is to be careful of "over-specialization", i.e. getting a degree that's so "niche", the market for it is unforgiving. I have brilliant and educated friends that have huge problems with their careers because they have degrees in things like genetics, organic chemistry, electrical engineering, etc. Also, don't discount trades (carpentry, plumbing, etc). Upon install it give you the option to encrypt your home folder, which obviously contains all of your things. It's easy to use. Most of the software that you will need can be obtained from a "App Market" type system that comes pre-installed. It comes with Firefox, Thunderbird email, Libre Office Suite, and other common programs. Too much to say...
