It's in c-tuning (C/F/Bb/Eb/G/C). The intro is basically an open 5th string (F), then the 4th string/7th fret (F), the 4th string/10th fret (Ab), the 4th string/12th fret (Bb), then the 4th string/9th fret (G), all with some palm muting interwoven in there. It's based on the Fm pentatonic scale. I believe Josh played it on a Maton through an Ampeg amp on Sky Valley.

On that note, that riff and John's voice have never failed to send a chill up my spine every time I hear it. Fucking legendary.
