No doubt Roy was awesome when he was healthy and this play is evidence of that. But, somehow, whatever MJ did back in his prime just looked soooo good.
Broys All-time clutch field goal percentage is right up there with the G.O.A.T. He is so good in the final minute. I have faith B-Roy will have a long career in Rip City 503! ODEN 2012
But as far as being overrated, how can you say that he is? Rookie of the year, 3 CONSECUTIVE allstar games (would have been 4 but he had to back out last year because he was injured). so lets see what that means. every year hes been in the league hes either been rookie of the year or an allstar. last year he was 1 of 4 players to be averaging 20 pts 4 rbs and 5 assists, the others being kobe dwade and lebron. suck a dick
Michael Jordan did not do it to be flashy, he said it himself that he saw a hand come up from the corner of his eyes and that it was ball instinct that made him reverse it.
He puts up the numbers of an all-star but he doesn't have the athleticism that would have fans vote him in. What is he, like 10th right now in the western conference guard vote?
@SamR326 Flashy? Please, look where they passed Jordan the ball. What else was he gonna do besides that play or dunk it straight up. If anything Roy was trying to be flashy cause he forced that drive to the hole rather than pass it to the post up man at :05.
@aboverim you're a fool. if you were a Blazers fan and have watched every single game brandon roy has played in since coming into the league, like I have, you would know that BRoy does not care whatsoever about being flashy.
@adrianbpj Blazers fan?? So you're the foolish one.
Listen here. Broy is the most erratic and overrated NBA star in the league, and he is ALWAYS taking bad shots, and making bad plays he is not supposed to. Look at his FG%!! If Bosh had challenged his left hand mid shot, it would have been another bad play by lefty BRoy. Meanwhile, Jordan could devastate you with EITHER hand. This shot is natural to Jordan. Its pretty obvious that Jordan's shot was more skilled and BRoy got a lucky fake.
@aboverim Yep it sure was pretty lucky that he made that split second decision to switch from right to left hand. and about the FG: his career FG percent is 46%. lets compare that to kobe, whose is 45%. that doesnt seem to bad with me. and obviously Im not saying that BRoy is as skilled as michael jordan. all I said was he doesnt care about being flashy lol
this is retarded. roy has the potential to be great but right now he's just a good player in a league thats FULL of good players. he isnt even a great yet. you DEFINETLEY cant compare him to jordan who is arguably the greatest of all time
Jordan did it a foot higher in the finals on the way to his first of 6 championships.
Roy did it a foot lower in the regular season on his way to a first round disappointment.
I would say its true Roy needed to switch though, when you play that far below the rim, even defensively challenged Chris Bosh could block your shot by accident.
Your stupid if you say Roy is better then Kobe. You must be mental to compare Jordan to Roy even on this move because Jordan's move was way different and much better. Roy is a good 2nd option on a team but he's not an allstar.
wow i think your mental because a player who can average 25 5reb 5ast a game is not a 2nd option. He is in the top 10 for ppg and is in the top 5 for points in the 4th with a little over 8 and is 2nd to lebron in FTA so you have no idea what you are talking about
@OmarChannel A Second option? So then tell me, who is the first option on the blazers? your fucking retard he is barley behind Lebron wade and kobe in every aspect of the game. ESPN even said he is the most underrated player they have ever seen, and when the blazers played my lakers, it seems like every time brandon roy would lock down kobe, and out play him. its like Brandon roy can think faster than most gaurds, he reacts much quicker than most. Except one thing, Jordan was open and didnt have to make the extra change, he was just playing and being mike. brandon had to switch as a defender was right i his face

@demonLXK he's still better than half the guys in the nba even with injuries. go back and watch game 4 of the blazers mavs series. the blazers were the only team that actually took it to the nba champions. that's sad that you get enjoyment from a great player losing his athletic ability due to injuries. you must be a very lonely person.
@TheHydrokilla I hope you saw his injury. Most analyst predict his numbers will never be the same. He will never be MVP or finals MVP. Maybe a hall of famer if he can last in the league like a injured Grant Hill.
Brandon Roy is my favorite player in the NBA right now, but I gotta admit Kobe's going to go down as the greater player. Kobe will go down as a top 10 player and B-Roy will be a top 50. Nothing to be ashamed of. Right now B-Roy's stats are better then Young Kobe, but I don't ever see B-Roy averaging 35 ppg, if only he can't force himself to jack that many shots. Brandons a way better teammate and character guy though. You don't see Brandon glare at his teammates when they make a bad play.
Kobe is 10 times better than Roy? That is a ridiculous statement. For one thing, they are very different players. Kobe looks to get his first, then help his teammates. B Roy looks to get his team started, then takes over games in the fourth quarter. Kobe might be better than Roy right now, but he is also 6 years older and has been in the league 10 years longer than B Roy has and he isn't that much better considering. Roy is going to pass Kobe in a couple years.
jordanesque means you did something that Michael Jordan would have done in the same situation. This video clearly shows that Roy has the ability to switch hands on a layup as Jordan has done numerous times(Hell Kobe did it in the Finals) This vid is not saying Roy is at Jordan's level; it's just stating that Roy can do a layup similar...actually, in my opinion Roy's was better because he had to do that. Jordan didn't really have to , he thought the guy was going to jump that's why but whateva...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
man that wasn't even close to the move jordan did!u can't say that roy is jordanesque just cuz of that one move which wasnt even close to what jordan did!
stallowned35 is right there wont be another jordan even if they pass 6 rings, jordans playing style was unheard of then.roy is my hometown hero Represent P-Town i love you roy and all the blazers!2009-10 look out!
got that right! 2009-10 look out!!.....for the los angeles lakers =D and why do people say there won't ever be another jordan-like player? i mean, you people are more close-minded than lebron, kobe, and wade fans. thats saying something lol. anyway, i do like brandon roy, hate portland, but that kid is good though. when is he a free agent by the way? i'd like to see him on the lakers where he would actually get noticed and get the coverage he deserves.
Roy hates the fakers! AND AS A BULLS FAN I HATE TO SAY THAT THE BLAZERS HAVE THE BEST YOUNG DYNASTY IN NBA HISTORY.. AND ITS WATCH OUT LAKERS TO YOU ERIK24_BANWAGON_MVP FAN =D
hey erica how by default does the lakers title feel huh. KG was down for the count, lebron choked, and houston had a problem....that is IN which the BLAZERS BEAT THE HELL OUT OF YAO AND practically KILLED MUTUMBO. of which portland got few calls in gms 3 and 4 losing by 4 combined points.... AND PORTLAND COULD HAVE BEAT LA IN RD 2. im mean they obviously split the season series with em at 2-2.
Other than Outlaw, Roy, and Aldridge, the rest of the Blazers are iffy. Maybe Blake, but he's only temporary.
Dont get me wrong, I like the Blazers, they're a young athletic team that would cause some noise once Roy turns into superstardom, but not yet. Not when Kobe is still playing.
Kobe made his teammates hate him, he made Shaq leave, and won championships only with the most dominate force in the paint in NBA history.
If Oden explodes like people speculate, then it's a fair contrast, but you can't look at a player who played with one of the top scorers in NBA history to someone who is the only All-Star on his team.
That's only his rookie season and only with Shaq, (that lasted longer)
Ask Brian Shaw, ask Derek Fisher, ask Horry, ask Fox, ask any other player, ask devean gorge.
They hated him? You must be living in Kobehate land. Lmfao, if you saw how they interacted, played on the floor, on and off it, they never "hated" each other.
You're probably some media infected kid that didn't even watch any of those games or know what the hell was actually happening.
So let me get this straight. You do, or don't deny people disliked him? I think you are just a Kobe fanboy instead, and infected with Laker buzz that you lost touch of reality. Do a little research, and maybe read Phil's book about the whole thing first.
And yes, Roy is better than Kobe, Roy is more educated, has a good personality and is a great teammate. 4 years in the League, Kobe was a risk, and could potentially tank a franchise. (And did, until Pau came along)
Let's compare Kobe's 3rd yr in the league with Roys, which was last year. Roy PPG: 22.6 Kobe PPG: 19.9 Roy APG: 4.0 Kobe APG: 3.9 Roy RPG: 4.7 Kobe RPG: 5.3 Roy FG%: 0.480 Kobe FG%: 0.465 Roy MPG: 37.2 Kobe MPG: 37.9
So the numbers back me up. Roy has slightly better numbers his 3rd year into the league, (his first two blow away Kobe because Kobe didn't even start)
He didn't have a lawsuit. He didn't demand for another star player to be traded, and let's see...he didn't make his coach want to quit.
Yeah, I'd have to say, my bet is on Roy at this point. Argue all you want, Kobe has rings because of Shaq and Pau/Odom, and proved he couldn't do it alone, even with Phil back.
jordan didnt do it alone magic johnson had kareem and james worthy bird had kevin mchale and robert parish history says you can't win championships alone so don't make it seem like anyone can win championships by him self a kobe at that point in his career wasn't the first second or third option for his team the lakers were a good franchise when he was drafted roy was given the ok to do as he pleased for a horrible franchise kobe is 10x better than roy don't disrespect what kobe has done
phil jackson phil jackson phil jacksonsince when does a coach who doesn't coach opinion matter when coaching its micheal running the plays phil jus sitting back samething with kobe so please shut the fuck up phil jackson my ass
That proves that you know nothing about basketball, grammar, OR the Triangle offense.
Before you go on about "plays" you should do your homework, and realize that the triangle doesn't actually HAVE PLAYS. Let's not forget that Kobe initiates the offense because Jackson taught him the triangle over 3-4 years of practice.
Or the fact that Kobe cost the Lakers games in the playoffs because he refused to run his assigned routes and instead forced inbound passes to him and missed shots
I agree. Kobe is a great athelete. His numbers are incredible. However, if you watch comcast on demand, Kobe's biography, you see a very haughty person at the start. He even said that when he went to a concert, it motivated him to be so good that people would shout out his name. He was defiant against Phil Jackson, and should have shown more respect to Shaq. He is better, and not as haughty, but you never hear Brandon Roy talking like Kobe. Roy is much more mature. A team player, and future MVP.
That is WHY Kobe's numbers are even more skewed. Because he HAD Shaq is why he got those rings! The point is, Roy is basically a one man show, because he doesn't have another player to take the heat off of him. At that time, Kobe was surrounded with talent and had the best coach, (Phil)
Roy is matching and besting Kobe in almost every category without all those advantages.
You want to compare age? Okay, but age =/= experience, and it's only fair to compare that.
Point is, Kobe may be a better stat player than Roy, but Roy is the better teammate, which was the entire argument I made to begin with. Who cares if Kobe scores 81 points? People hate him, his team fell apart because of him, and he suffered the consequences.
It's obvious you're a Laker fan, so nothing will make sense to you since you automatically drink the Kool-Aid down there, but the fact is, Kobe almost destructed your entire team.
I just think it's funny that you try to find every other argument to somehow claim that Kobe is a greater player than Roy, which wasn't even what this video or conversation was about.
It's like a guy driving a bright yellow car. Compensating for something.
ummm... aldridge is noticed around the nba as a rising star wholl be one of the elite power forwards. oden is rising. kobe just takes 1000 shots a game and makes 15 of them. shaq just took care of the misses and thats why they won (barely)
ur dumb kobe has 10 years on Roy and roy is almost having kobes numbers the only difference is in points by like 3 or 4 and thats not saying much when kobe puts up 10 more shots. if u really want to compare kobe and roy do it from kobes first three years and roys CAREER then you;ll see whats up
Who thinks Jordon was show boating on that "change hands" move. He probably could have just dunked it or finger rolled it in. Roy's switch-a-roo was actually necessary to avoid a block.
he could, his team isnt good enough to get to the Finals. Hopefully they're gonna get someone good, to give them the push to make it further into the playoffs
Roy is one of a kind. So is MJ and Kobe. Even if he was being compared to someone else he is never going to be Kobe. He's not a ball hog like him and plays basketball with class.
Jordan's finish was more impressive but he when he recieved the pass the lane was open and he was under no pressure until he was near the hoop and even then no one realy tried to block his shot. Roy started with a crossover beating his man drove around a second defender then switch hands againt a now gold medal olympian who was oputstreached trying to block his shot. Is Roy jordan? No, but he might be truly great in his own right. We will have to wait and see.
well no shit he's better, but brandon roy is still hella young, you never know how good he'd going to get. btw brandon roy actually faked out a blocker with this move while no one came to challenge jordan
are you kidding me? Jordan's was easily more impressive because he fully extended his elbow and it was in the NBA finals, not some meaningless game against the raptors. I will give BRoy credit since he probably can't palm the ball the way jordan could but Jordan's is better.
Brandon isn't like MJ. Jordan tried to be flashy. Brandon is out there to win games for his team, he doesn't really care about his numbers. Dont get me wrong, I don't think that about MJ, but i cant think anything about him. I never actually got to see him play, other than his "comeback." All I know is brandon only does whats needed, nothing more.
That's an understatement. Roy's flashy moves are quite underrated. He really has a lot of tricks up his sleeve, though I would concede that he doesn't have as many as Jordan by any means.
Secondly, no, defenses aren't better today than in Jordan's time. Back then, a player was allowe to hand-check another player, which meant using one hand on another player's hip to maintain distance. IE, you could legally push another player. There were defenses by the Knicks, HEat, and Pistons designed specifically to stop MJ.
The modern NBA has eased up on defensive rules to allow for increased scoring.
First off, Jordan was going to dunk the ball, and could have, but at the last second he looked left and thought he saw #14 about to jump for the block. He instinctively switched hands from a dunk with his right to a layup on the other side with his left.
Brandon Roy's was a great moved, but it was an intended fake all the way, was much closer to the basket, and was about half-a-foot closer to the floor than Jordan's.
Then why didn't he? The only player left was A.C. Green whom he was already past. B-Roys shot was premeditated but that's the beauty of it. In a split second Roy knew what he had to do to score. Roy shows the world that if you can use both hands on a drive that it increases your chance to get a better % shot off. You think all kids coming up would do it but they don't. That Jordan shot has always been so over rated and with B-Roy doing it every night?. -D
Why didn't he what? Jump to block? Because MJ was already ahead of him in anticipating that play and had switched hands, removing the possibility of the block. It's all very subtle, but it's there to see if you watch carefully.
Using both hands on a drive doesn't actually increase your chance at a high % shot because the difficulty factor in using that move is much higher than a fundamental drive. Getting close to the basket doesn't guarantee a high % if your finishing move's a low %.
its funny because jordan has done that move hundreds of times brandon roy does it once and its not even that impressive and u have to make a video of it.
He is quickly becoming the closest thing to a flat out Jordanesque player that I have ever seen. I mean go look at the Phoenix game if you don't believe me!!
jordan wanted to dunk it but realised he jumped too early...and so he switched hands. brandon did it to avoid getting blocked. totally different. its not that hard a move anyway.
No doubt Roy was awesome when he was healthy and this play is evidence of that. But, somehow, whatever MJ did back in his prime just looked soooo good.

Roy is going to pass Kobe in a couple years.
koyote27 2 years ago
jordanesque means you did something that Michael Jordan would have done in the same situation.

AND PORTLAND COULD HAVE BEAT LA IN RD 2. im mean they obviously split the season series with em at 2-2.
Habeev07 2 years ago
Haha, are you kidding?
Lets see Roy match up against Kobe.
What has Roy done that Kobe already hasn't?
What has Aldridge done that Gasol hasn't?
Other than Outlaw, Roy, and Aldridge, the rest of the Blazers are iffy. Maybe Blake, but he's only temporary.
Dont get me wrong, I like the Blazers, they're a young athletic team that would cause some noise once Roy turns into superstardom, but not yet. Not when Kobe is still playing.
SekaizZ 2 years ago
The problem is you're comparing guys who are less than 4 years in the league, against guys who have nearly 10 years in the league.
ajlepisto 2 years ago
Yeah?
Compare Kobe and Roy when their 4 years in the league.
Still in favor of Kobe.
SekaizZ 2 years ago
Differences?
Kobe made his teammates hate him, he made Shaq leave, and won championships only with the most dominate force in the paint in NBA history.
If Oden explodes like people speculate, then it's a fair contrast, but you can't look at a player who played with one of the top scorers in NBA history to someone who is the only All-Star on his team.
ajlepisto 2 years ago
"Made his teammates hate him."
SekaizZ 2 years ago
So let me get this straight. You do, or don't deny people disliked him? I think you are just a Kobe fanboy instead, and infected with Laker buzz that you lost touch of reality. Do a little research, and maybe read Phil's book about the whole thing first.
And yes, Roy is better than Kobe, Roy is more educated, has a good personality and is a great teammate. 4 years in the League, Kobe was a risk, and could potentially tank a franchise. (And did, until Pau came along)
ajlepisto 2 years ago
Of course people dislike him. Look at the Blazer Stadium, Rose Garden.
Celtics? Everyone in boston? Now people in Orlando? I disliked Kobe for a majority of time.
He took idiotic shots, forced up jumpers, but he had an air of cockiness that was unforgivable.
And I lol @ Roy is better than Kobe.
4 years into the League Kobe was a risk?
Which is why in that 4 years that Kobe got drafted, they went on a 3-peat, correct?
SekaizZ 2 years ago
ajlepisto 2 years ago
So the numbers back me up. Roy has slightly better numbers his 3rd year into the league, (his first two blow away Kobe because Kobe didn't even start)
He didn't have a lawsuit. He didn't demand for another star player to be traded, and let's see...he didn't make his coach want to quit.
Yeah, I'd have to say, my bet is on Roy at this point. Argue all you want, Kobe has rings because of Shaq and Pau/Odom, and proved he couldn't do it alone, even with Phil back.
ajlepisto 2 years ago
jordan didnt do it alone magic johnson had kareem and james worthy bird had kevin mchale and robert parish history says you can't win championships alone so don't make it seem like anyone can win championships by him self a kobe at that point in his career wasn't the first second or third option for his team the lakers were a good franchise when he was drafted roy was given the ok to do as he pleased for a horrible franchise kobe is 10x better than roy don't disrespect what kobe has done
syzgi 2 years ago
Please read or listen to Phil Jackson's book before you post up stupidity like that again.
It proves everything I just said.
ajlepisto 2 years ago
phil jackson phil jackson phil jacksonsince when does a coach who doesn't coach opinion matter when coaching its micheal running the plays phil jus sitting back samething with kobe so please shut the fuck up phil jackson my ass
syzgi 2 years ago
HAHAHAHA.
Or the fact that Kobe cost the Lakers games in the playoffs because he refused to run his assigned routes and instead forced inbound passes to him and missed shots
ajlepisto 2 years ago
A team player, and future MVP.
johnnyleesteele 2 years ago
roy isnt in his prime and still demolishes kobe. kobe takes 1000 shots a game and makes 15 of them.
iamkillermonkey 2 years ago
Okay, then compare the teams, will you?
As you said, Kobe had Shaq right?
Who does Roy have?
Aldridge? please.
Shaq scored monster points, enough so that Kobe didn't have to score, he wasn't the franchise scorer back then. Roy is.
How old is roy? 25ish? How old was Kobe? Uh, 21? Please.
SekaizZ 2 years ago
You must not get it...
Okay, but age =/= experience, and it's only fair to compare that.
ajlepisto 2 years ago
Point is, Kobe may be a better stat player than Roy, but Roy is the better teammate, which was the entire argument I made to begin with. Who cares if Kobe scores 81 points? People hate him, his team fell apart because of him, and he suffered the consequences.
It's obvious you're a Laker fan, so nothing will make sense to you since you automatically drink the Kool-Aid down there, but the fact is, Kobe almost destructed your entire team.
ajlepisto 2 years ago
I just think it's funny that you try to find every other argument to somehow claim that Kobe is a greater player than Roy, which wasn't even what this video or conversation was about.
It's like a guy driving a bright yellow car. Compensating for something.
ajlepisto 2 years ago
ummm... aldridge is noticed around the nba as a rising star wholl be one of the elite power forwards. oden is rising. kobe just takes 1000 shots a game and makes 15 of them. shaq just took care of the misses and thats why they won (barely)

We will have to wait and see.

are you kidding me? Jordan's was easily more impressive because he fully extended his elbow and it was in the NBA finals, not some meaningless game against the raptors. I will give BRoy credit since he probably can't palm the ball the way jordan could but Jordan's is better.

Brandon isn't like MJ. Jordan tried to be flashy. Brandon is out there to win games for his team, he doesn't really care about his numbers. Dont get me wrong, I don't think that about MJ, but i cant think anything about him. I never actually got to see him play, other than his "comeback." All I know is brandon only does whats needed, nothing more.
lobsters12111 3 years ago

TontoNo5 3 years ago
Then why didn't he? The only player left was A.C. Green whom he was already past. B-Roys shot was premeditated but that's the beauty of it. In a split second Roy knew what he had to do to score. Roy shows the world that if you can use both hands on a drive that it increases your chance to get a better % shot off. You think all kids coming up would do it but they don't. That Jordan shot has always been so over rated and with B-Roy doing it every night?. -D
dustysnowman67 3 years ago
Why didn't he what? Jump to block? Because MJ was already ahead of him in anticipating that play and had switched hands, removing the possibility of the block. It's all very subtle, but it's there to see if you watch carefully.
Using both hands on a drive doesn't actually increase your chance at a high % shot because the difficulty factor in using that move is much higher than a fundamental drive. Getting close to the basket doesn't guarantee a high % if your finishing move's a low %.
