Whole film is a symbol. And you can interpret it in your own way. For somebody father is a god, but you also can see this character literally. It all depends of you.
that box was his airplane black box. he was a pilot, he probably had a plane crash and ended up living on that island for 12 yrs. remember he told his sons he couldn't eat fish because he had had to eat fish for years. my guess is he brought his sons to the island to eventually tell them his story.

@prasadmt10 you may think that all western people promote degrading culture. But let me ask you this. If love results in violence, like this man who obviously loves he kids (willing to risk life to save son), shows plenty of violence to his kids in order to teach them, it is actually good? He is a good father, but because of violence, his death also happened. This is not just a Russian problem, it is a male problem.Playing manhood with children can be dangerous. Nevertheless, this is good movie.
Except if you are not an youngster, I think, you should give a thought to what I write (majority of the youngsters in their anger fails to appreciate truth). Criticise, I did; the western, U S and funny religion's cultural ideologies. But "that all western people promote degrading culture", as you write is not and shall never be my conviction. We do know, that our parents chastcised us as chidren. contd. The surgeon's use of the knife causes pain, but eliminates future terrible pain and in many cases untimely death. We are talking about cultured parents on all the earth. Some times parenting involves strictness to the extent of caning or other mesures, depending upon the society in which we live; ofcourse tactfully. Violence is criminal and the father of the movie is never so. Catchin up the boy who stole the purse from his sons is brought back and put before the sons.
To be punished by his sons, mind you, if the sons want so only. (What shall we infer from this? That the sorroundings in which the family lives is not a city which is well policed etc, but a village with similar justice systems also in operation. Do not conclude that there are no courts or police etc, in Russian villages. So getting the children a taste of the same is the very right thing to do, if you are not a sugar candy Daddy). The father asks the sons to hit back the thief for hitting them.
@prasadmt10 What is a funny religion then? I have read everything you said. I never assumed that there are no courts or police in small towns.
I also think that the father's death is unnecessary if they had talked properly. This, in my opinion is not a cultured way of raising children. Of course, you are free to disagree with me.
Nevertheless, I think this is a good movie because it reveals the male psyche.
'Society has degraded, as perhaps, never before in history; to turning people to gangsterism-kill,smash,cut throat, smash planes to towers-but make profit or subjugate, is the prevailing so called western and funny relegion's idealogy.'
smash planes to towers----------subjugate--------funny relegion's idealogy
Yes, the father's death was unnecessary, but he chose to take the risk, which could be stated as being stupid, or a major error of judgement. Define 'talking properly'. What exactly is a "cultured way of raising children?" Russians are (in) famous for the 'dark' movies which they love to produce, and as movies are primarily meant to be entertaining, seconded by expressing some type of message, what's the big deal? Virtually any interpretation could be attributed to this movie.
Nothing was taken out of context, merely verbal expression and questions as to the content of the movie, and your somewhat convoluted ideas. Again, the movie is open to a myriad of interpretations. Next thing it will be, Joseph Stalin was not a 'bad guy', just suffered from poor publicity.
So very glad that your sticking with your interpretation. The fact that your reasoning is as flawed as that practiced by Barack Obama and Co. Gives those with a great deal of commonsense hope for the future. As for the film depicting "modern male psychology", the kindest thing which one could say. is that somewhere along the way, you lost the plot. Those of us whom have lived with the Russians, accept that history never repeats itself, man always does.
@arriviste2020 If I don't believe Stalin is a good man means I'm like Barrack Obama. If I say this movie reflects modern male psychology it means my ideas are convoluted. Anything man, it is open to interpretation and you too can interpret the way you want it.
Hmmmm, "Chan' would appear to indicate a name of Asian origin. That may explain the long convolution. Other than that, it's merely another case of the blind leading the blind.
The floor is yours, make of it as you will.Current interest has evaporated.
contd. The boys choose not to do so. What does the father do? Does he smash the boy thief before his sons to gain their, so called, male respect? Which perhaps we can name as 'male psychology'? Instead the father asks the boy thief, why he stole and gives currency notes to the thief for food. We see the thief running away. This is another lesson to the sons, in "love". We all come out of our mothers' womb many a times causing much pain and blood loss to our mothers. And we are to give back-
@prasadmt10 "...not a depressed, diappointed, pessimistic and violent, so called avenger to society for the wrongs done to him by the world.A western or US director would have chosen such a plot."
"Any US or Westrn Director would have brought in 'porn scenes' in such situations."
Am I making a mistake here? You seem to be generalizing that all western directors would choose such plots, by using the word "any".
@prasadmt10 In this movie, the mother talks to the younger son, very differently from the father also. The mother does not "provoke" the son and she says, "don't worry, I won't tell anyone you didn't jump". That is the difference between male and female psyche. I wasn't talking about Russian culture.
Your observation of the difference between male and female psyche by pointing it out in the movie is correct and very true.
Your comments in general are a great tribute to Good Movie/Cinema enthusiasts. Your such comments encourage the reader to analyse movies with care and look out for good; not alone in the movies, but in the society and world in general too.
@prasadmt10 Thank you for your efforts. I know that the Russian culture and language is rich, and I believe that language shapes the way the mind thinks. That's why we have different way of thinking between cultures.
And it makes me sad when because of Ideology and war, people have negative sentiments.
But I believe that Russian language and culture is a different thing from Russian national ideology (communist in the past). Modern Russia is very different.
conrtd.----later, utmost care and affection and foremost of all 'Love' to our mothers and to womanhood in general. Both male and female persons ought to do this. Please tell me catching the boy thief incidences in the movie is violent or generates benevolant feelings to the viewers. If I slightly twist your words, for fun, hope you won't be offended. The only male problem involved in the movie is the absence of the father's, ie, the male parent's disciplining of the sons for 12 years.
@prasadmt10 In my culture, we try to treat man and woman as equally as possible. The pain (and blood loss) that the mother goes trough is only biological, but love comes from the heart.
I never said that the father is being unkind to the boy thief. In fact, what he did was very kind. I was not referring to that as male psyche.
I appreciate your effort of translating your comments into English.
The father is perhaps one among 'the greatest', 'most loving' of all fathers. A 12 year gap and the attractive woman-his wife-he leaves, the very next day; and takes the children for fishing and camping. Why? To fulfill the required instruction of his wife."spend time with the children".And a whole lot of correct and loving teachings he imparts to his children by practical lessons. If this is not love, what is it then? And the resposes of the sons are great too.The younger one's assumption are--
@goatbut29 Well, not "they." One (Andrei, the older one) tragically drowned shortly after making this movie. He was apparently trying to impress some drunk girls at the time.
depression~ depression ~ depression~ and he made it worse~ the kid was brave, defiant and in a rage over being controlled by someone he didn't even know~
I had seen this film in a festival. Saw it once more with family. Thanks a lot for the upload.
Yes, the box is the real mystery !!!
And what happened to all the CPSU documents ? No one knows !!
In the communist party regime, USSR was a real information-island !
Just recall the french-cut of the father(?). It was indeed a military regime.
The communist party and the proletariat-peasantry had differently oriented, thought slightly overlapping goals, which perhaps none succeeded to achieve.
I am looking for a Russian movie. Its about a young woman named Lida, she has to run from the city because her husband has been arrested by the KGB. While she tries to escape by train, she is seriously ill so they throw her of the train. An old woman named Malanya finds her and takes her to her village/kolhoz, where there is one gypsy man and only females. At first nobody likes her, later she falls in love with the gypsy man. Her husband ends up being alive, but she choses the gypsy.
This is about a young boy's memoirs. In the beginning of the film a boy dives into the water and beneath him is a sunken boat. Perhaps it was boat his father was in when it sank and perhaps this is why the boy is afraid to jump.
What happened to intellectuals - all are masturbating away? No one have seen "Последний дюйм"? No one has ever heard of italian neo-realism? Sad that.
It's just plain simple life.A man is gone for what ever reason, then returns. To rebuild, and start anew? Looks like he is,until he pushes, shoves, yells, hits, bullies the boys. This is not a nice man.Maybe she ran from him?The bully. He is quiet and sly,"hit the boys back",a violent streak too.He uses them as cover to get his "box",saying nothing.Looks at times like he wants to care, but just does not know how, unless forced to.It never would have worked anyway. He leaves never to return,again.end.
At the end I was looking for him to be unconscious but alive so the boys would have their dad with them, I think that 's what they would have preferred. I also wondered what was in the metal box? Why took the boys to such a deserted place? A sad ending.
The father did not take his sons on vacation, he took them with him to wherever he himself needed to go as companions, just because their mom asked him to do it, and he saw it fitting.
The older son did not whine and bitch about being abandoned. He was glad to see his father and to learn from him. The key moment is how the older son accepted the role of the leader towards the end of the movie. He gave orders to his brother using the same words their dad had used. He grew up, instantly.
cannot understand the death of the father. What is meaning of the death? What was inside the box the father put in the boat. Really many questions for this movie. At last I do not understand what message the director wanted to send to audiance ???????
@thuinin Perhaps, it's hard for you to understand the idea of the movie or its parts, as you should be aware of the Russian real life outside big cities. This life is very hard and poor, often children live in incomplete families with only mothers. Father came to help future "momma's boys" become the real MEN. This film is a sort of parable about the Father trying his Sons strength. The saddest thing about the film is that the actor who played Andrey drowned 2 months before the premiere.
I remember when we watched this movie at veronauka (orthodox christian elective course) at my highschool. There was so many different opinions and very good discussions. In one word great movie.
What is in the box is everything the father has worked for to pass it to his children. But, as always the only think can pass to the next generation are memories.
Certainly, the director put his best effort to justify little fella and some of commentators have taken it. But for me, it is tough to say who was worse jerk.. The boy had serious attitude problem, innocent not at all. Though at start, he seemed to be chicken, but then he seemed to be intelligent, which makes exactly opposite point of his thinking, then from middle onwards, he starts showing his true color. By comparison, His older brother looked more sane and worldly.
What is inside the chest that the father dug? Who did the father received those mysterious calls from? Argh!!! This is what i hate about foreign movies..... Thay always leave some of the questions unanswered......
@mamamiya3210 The director doesn't give the answers to all the questions as they are not essential to the realization of the main idea of the film. But to my mind, the father had been in jail before returning home and in that trunk (perhaps) he had smth worthy. He could have dug it before he went to jail. If it was so, then the father made this trip and took his children just to cover his true intentions to find that trunk. Anyway the main idea is teaching the real life lesson to the boys.
Maybe the man lacked true wisdom in his ways of doing things, but who are we to judge what is in a man's heart? We're not God, nor can we make such judgements to call for a man's death, unless he has taken the life of an innocent one!
What was in the trunk that the dad dug up and put in the boat? The youngest child was very untrusting of his dad and thought only the worse, where I truly believe that the dad loved his sons and just wanted to spend quality time with them and in his own way, show his love, while teaching them to be men. Such a tragic and sad ending.
@gran7praizn7 no he didnt. he deserves to die if he raises his children like that. if ths is tolerated or even accepted the cycle of cruelty continues.

Это фильм о проблеме отцов и детей. Hеужели не понятно? все же так просто
This movie is about eternal problem of fathers and sons.

What happened to intellectuals - all are masturbating away? No one have seen "Последний дюйм"? No one has ever heard of italian neo-realism? Sad that.
Certainly a good non-square movie, thumbs up.
godunovc 4 months ago

The saddest thing about the film is that the actor who played Andrey drowned 2 months before the premiere.

the film is very sad, it is tragic. their father wasn't given a chance to prove himself that he love them, especially to Vanya.

@rkriitr Ah come on, man. You spoiled the story and your comment is top if the list.
one5643 7 months ago
Certainly, the director put his best effort to justify little fella and some of commentators have taken it. But for me, it is tough to say who was worse jerk.. The boy had serious attitude problem, innocent not at all. Though at start, he seemed to be chicken, but then he seemed to be intelligent, which makes exactly opposite point of his thinking, then from middle onwards, he starts showing his true color. By comparison, His older brother looked more sane and worldly.

What is inside the chest that the father dug? Who did the father received those mysterious calls from? Argh!!! This is what i hate about foreign movies..... Thay always leave some of the questions unanswered......
mamamiya3210 7 months ago 2
@mamamiya3210 The director doesn't give the answers to all the questions as they are not essential to the realization of the main idea of the film. But to my mind, the father had been in jail before returning home and in that trunk (perhaps) he had smth worthy. He could have dug it before he went to jail. If it was so, then the father made this trip and took his children just to cover his true intentions to find that trunk. Anyway the main idea is teaching the real life lesson to the boys.

Maybe the man lacked true wisdom in his ways of doing things, but who are we to judge what is in a man's heart? We're not God, nor can we make such judgements to call for a man's death, unless he has taken the life of an innocent one!
gran7praizn7 8 months ago
What was in the trunk that the dad dug up and put in the boat? The youngest child was very untrusting of his dad and thought only the worse, where I truly believe that the dad loved his sons and just wanted to spend quality time with them and in his own way, show his love, while teaching them to be men. Such a tragic and sad ending.
gran7praizn7 8 months ago
@gran7praizn7 no he didnt. he deserves to die if he raises his children like that. if ths is tolerated or even accepted the cycle of cruelty continues.
