just got to know this song this year . the melody and its chord progressions immediately stuck in the head after one hearing. dont know a word of french and am wondering if the lyrics is suppose to be this dark... or is something just lost in the translation from french to english?

The lyrics by Michel Berger are always difficult to translate properly :

the story : a girl, her father "loves" too much, has problems in her social life when she grows up. When she understands what boys want of her, she marries a guy whithout real love. Again prisonner in a "family trap" she has not built her life and can't find her place yet. She asks her listener to take her away and do not talk...

See ? not a cool or romantic song...

Berger was a genious to translate such a mood in a song...

Yes, her voice is celestal and rare.

I must say I prefer hie early career because of that. After around the 70's her voice becomes different and less soft, but still lovely.
