No they are not banjos. They are simply playing closer down towards the bridge where the strings are tighter, making it sound like a banjo. In the album version, however, there is a subtle one in the background.

Shins are good, but somehow in most live concerts the singer seems to be simply struggling at high pitches. In the studio versions, he's really good.
