This was an exercise callend "Highway 84" that took place on Highway A 29 near Ahlhorner Heide. It was a kind of test, if the current types of NATO-aircrafts could safely operate from this kind of "ersatz-airfields". As usual for any maneuvre, there are guests like politicians and members of other armed forces. They get a kind of demonstration.
@berserkerben76 The SEPECAT Jaguar is an Anglo-French jet ground attack aircraft, originally used by the British Royal Air Force and the French Armée de l'Air in the close air support and nuclear strike role, and still in service with several export customers, notably the Indian Air Force and the Royal Air Force of Oman.
The runway is on the A44 motorway between the driveway Geseke and the driveway Büren. You can see it on the Satelitte. The runway should be used when attacking the Russians.
@neoayrton97 probably a NATO practice from the Cold War era. Some Auotbahns were supposed to function as airfields if runway were destroyed by enemy bombardment.
@WarheartHC during the cold war, there were thousands of hidden allied bases in west germany next to Autobahn highways, in case of emergencies, the Autobahn could have been used as a runway for fighter planes or supply planes.
@BeechSundowner Take a look at Google for "Hgihway 84 Nato gambit DOBAS emergency landing". In West Germany there are many emergency landings on the Autobahn.
Makes you think how well those German roads are built. Fighter jets like these are not very heavy, but the beating they take from the heat of the engine must be immense.
To this day I think the F4 is one of the meanest looking combat aircraft - even from rear on takeoff, it looks determined and fierce.

nokia1110 1 year ago
