I think people make too many assumptions about a person when they hear a song that person wrote. People tend to do that with music more than any other art form. They always seem to think music is far more personal, genuine and honest than anything else. Its not correct to assume a musician feels / thinks / believes a certain way because you heard it a lyric they wrote.
Saw Moz on 12/17, the day my dad died when I was 3 and a half year old.....I had a paper route, I mooned kids from the bus.....but now I know I can forgive...Morrissey said so.
I am a huge Morissey fan, but it is hard to identify yourself with some of the songs He writes, in my case this is one of them, I DO like this song, but it is extremely personal of him.
@fergarais Well, check the signal he makes with his hands when he says DO YOU UNDERSTAND for the second time 1:34 and another signal at the end of the video.
Regarding his child abuse, agreed. His/Their (The Smiths) song HeadMaster's Ritual speaks volumes. At the same time he contradicts himself with this song because it wasn't Jesus who caused his pain and allowed that to happen to him. It was the people of this earth who are all or were sinners at some point before they found their faith. The good thing is he believes in Jesus, the bad thing is the only one who's perfect is Jesus/God and or sinless. He needs to educate himself with the Bible.
@DarkTsunami23 I'm sure Morrissey knows the Bible quite well. I'd would say if you felt that way to educate yourself on Morrissey, not to be offensive to you. He's very intelligent and almost all his lyrics are purposefully vague, metaphoric, satirical, or just confusing. If I we're to guess his religious belief I'd say agnostic. Songs people write are performances, they'll not always (and don't have to be) about the person who wrote it or performs it.
Good song. Jesus never said anything about homosexuals though (in th bible). The old testament / the bible says homosexuality is a sin though. So many intepretations of cristianity is homophobic so we all know what the song is about.
I believe that a man named Jesus Christ DID exist and was an amazing man.
But, there is A TON of evidence to support the claim that there was never a man named Jesus Christ. Watch Zeitgeist (on youtube) for a simple version of this theory. And Christians, don't respond to this comment with anger, If there was a Jesus, he wouldn't have wanted it that way... Now would he?
@calico992 Where's this evidence you claim, legitimate evidence that is. Nice way to preface such a careless post with "don't respond with anger, Jesus wouldn't." It's like "let me say what I want to but please don't be offended or mind if you don't agree." I'm not angry, just amazed at the simplicity.
@bbow73 Morrissey is educated. It is a common misconception that adolescents have an 'incorrect' view on jesus. This is wrong. Who is to say he is even real, any one is entitled to their own opinion, and Morrissey believes that if there is a jesus he has made Morrissey to passionate for humanity. And this is coming for a 17 year old, please don't be so patronising in the future. Thanks.
@Lou, sorry if I came off as 'age-ist', but Morrissey is voicing opinions based on a very narrow and sheltered view. I suspect he has isolated himself from any influence that does not align with his world view. I applaud him for speaking out against mainstream ignorance, but by assuming the mainstream accurately represents ANYTHING lumps himself into the same ignorant population that he is criticizing.
its just a fact: if Madonna plays with christian symbols she is just a stupid blasphemes whore -but when Morissey puts on a priest's robe, makes the cross sign and forgives Jesus - he is a genius
I'm a huge and passionate music fan and believe without a shadow of a doubt that he is the best Lyricist in music history. Sadly he won't be regarded that way until he dies.
the thing i admire most about him is his explicit qualities. most musicians should learn from him to be free of their reserved insecurities and openly express themselves for some mere enlightenment...

I thought Morrissey was educated, the lyrics reflect an adolescent's understanding of Jesus and reek of misplaced angst.
He still has a decent voice though.

LouVivaMorrissey 4 months ago 2
@Lou, His perception is that Jesus thinks homosexuality is a sin, Jesus doesn't say that.
He thinks Jesus is guilt/shame based. That is a corrupted institutional tradition, not the actual message of Jesus.
Legitimate critics of Jesus don't dispute his existence, just his divinity.
bbow73 4 months ago
@Lou, Entitlement/opinion have no bearing on reality.
I don't see how he's too passionate for humanity. He sang about animals rights once, but not human rights.
He sings about human cruelty, but only as it affects him (ex.nothing about sex traffiking), that's not humanitarian it's narcissistic.
