If Depp had tried his version on broadway it wouldn't have worked, if Hearne had tried his version on the silver screen it wouldn't have worked. Burton's version was intended to be realistic and grimdark, the actual musical is much more fantastical, comparing them is idiotic
I say this as someone that likes Johnny Depp as an actor, and thought the Tim Burton film was pretty decent; he didn't do it best. Whoever did it best is obviously going to be down to personal opinion. Me? I prefer George Hearn's performance over the others, but all of them did it their own ways, and all of them are pretty decent.
Now, children, kindly stop it with this childish pissing contest. It's fucking embarrassing watching you rip into one another as if this was a matter of life or death.
I personally think the movie version was best, but think about it: How many takes did it take to make it turn out so well? You gotta applaud theatrical performers for doing a still great job in one shot.
I feel like the second one is..... weird, because he slits the judges throat AS he says Benjamin Barker maniacally and then just sits there for several seconds... to me it's kinda anticlimactic.
yes of course johnny depp and mister little fake goth boy burton did it best but you little school girls who dream about getting laid with johnny depp take in consideration one, just ONE FUCKING THING !
this is a theatrical fucking play ! its broadway ! it HAS TO BE OVER THE TOP !!!
You assholes saying "Johnny did it best" are only probably saying that because you are diehard Johnny Depp fan girls and saw the Sweeney Todd movie instead of the play first!
Hahaha look at the difference between the musical versions and the movie version! In the musicals, it's just a simple, fatal slice, but in the movie, it's a sadistic, repetitive stab....
@macanfly there's colleges and univerities by me i might just check to see if any are performing this play anytme soon. thanks for the idea i never thought of that
I've seen many great actors portray Sweeney Todd in professional productions; among them: Len Cariou, George Hern, Michael Ceveris, Bob Gunton, Kelsey Grammer & David Hess. All were outstanding actor/singers. SWEENEY TODD is a musical. By no stretch of anyone's definition of "singing" does Johnny Depp qualify as a singer. He wasn't scary and it was a mistake to cast him. The film's soundtrack is unlistenable as his voice is weak and atrocious. Len Cariou was the best Sweeney by far.
The third one has so much animosity to it. I mean, the way Michael Cerveris says "BARKER!!!" there was freakin' crazy. The whistling instrument and the stage lights shifting to red gave off a nightmarish feel.
funny how Cariou won the Tony for the role and no one is mentioning him..is it only because there's just stills, and you all need video to judge? Get with it already! Cariou was the best!
You know whats wierd is when i hear the name sweeny todd i used to think of a realy scary evil barber, but now i think of him as a realy sad old man, and seeing that last one actualy made my heart drop. Amazing film!
Am I the only one who thought Depp's version was the best take. Because if you've seen the film, you know that he does that whisper like "Hey, I'll tell you a secret. Remember that guy you arrested and sent away for no reason at all?"
Len: He sounds like Satan welcoming you to Disney Hell. Scary, but ironically grand.
George: He sounds avenged and like he's wanted to say this for years.
Michael: He reminds me of Hannible Ector, in a weird way, but I like his way of shouting it: Ha ha, now you die.
Johnny: lol, He's all, "Yep, you guessed right, bitch!!!" I would have loved him to prolong the ending syllyble, however. Then again, I love Depp. ^.^'
Overall, I'd say George takes the cake by a close shave, lol
Len: The Avenging Demon, the style lets the judge know that justice has come for him
George: Reveling in the madness, that his quest for vengeance has led him to.
Michael: Sorrowful, perhaps something telling him that all the deaths have changed nothing, but he's compelled anyway.
Johnny: Pissed off (note that Rickman's "Benjamin Barker" seems to have more contempt than the others. This in turn leads to Depp being furious at the contempt of a corrupt man)
I saw Len, George and Michael each perform SWEENEY live on Broadway. Len was the scariest and best actor while George was the best singer/shouter. Michael hasn't the gravitas to pull off Sweeney live -- and Johnny Depp was horribly miscast and should have been dubbed. Russell Crowe was considered to play Sweeney in the movie -- I so wish he had.
@CEMILIOB i disagree on the Depp part... I absolutely LOVED his voice... I think he has good control of it and i like how he can get so gutteral while still singing. I have listened to all the George Hearn versions, but i would have to say I think I prefer Depp. But I do think Hearn was excellent too!
I like the way that Edmund Lyndeck said it (with Len Cariou), but I love the way that George Hearn shouted it. I've got to say that Michael Cerveris had the worst one. Pretty much all of them were good.
I liked George, Len, and Depp.. in that order Hearn gave it a vendetta that non could match, depp gave that extreme level of insanity and cariou was right in between. Listen to hearn and cariou just talk and you can hear the difference between them in this video and when they just talk and it's an amazing difference
i dont like the others. i love the new one better. but its nice to see how it all started out as a play. then into a big screen movie which then made it well known and more people watched the older musicals. so be greatful that this movie kicked major ass.
I'm sorry...I really love all the versions....But George Hearn is just so freaking awesome. I'm not sure if thats how he would like to be described but WOW he is just amazing.
conpaired to this sweeney todd, and i'm only looking at sweeney todd, johnny sucked. dont get me wrong i loved the johnny version, but everyone in this sweeney todd just brought more to the play.
god... okay i am in LOVE with both george hearn and michael cerveris. but there is a clear winner here (err.. winners actually). michael cerveris's emotion when he says it is amazing so he's one of my winners, but johnny depp does those cray eyes so damn well!
I like them all! But I honestly think that Depp and Hearn did the best. If you have a different opinion that's fine. But don't get angry with me for stating mine.
i have stated this before i state it here also, i feel Len is no contest teh best singer, george the more present stage actor, arguably the creepiest, but i felt michael was probably the best combination of both theatricality and melody, though the manner in which his version was set and displayed i didn't like as much. johnny is not comparable cuz its a film version, not the same rules of delivery as theater, plus he's not a baritone, but yeah i like johnny's teh best cuz of psycho peepers
Your statement is true in many ways I have always thought of george as the best (live play) Sweeney Todd,he has this bomming voice and realastic acting. And depp is good for his darker presence.
depp is a film actor and can carry the film w/ his ability to use a soft spoken voice, which can not be done at all in a play. u must scream every word so everyone can hear u, so there is no whispering or subtle talk, hense why i dont compare them. i really liked Michael Cerveris but again that whole minimal set w/ instrument players in the play didn't do it for me, i prefer the original style.
You don't need to SCREAM at all in theatre, you have to project. BIG difference. Len Cariou is a good singer, but George Hearn has it ALL. He is the BEST actor with the best voice to ever play the role. Johnny was a horrible choice. Come on lets face it, the guy can't NEARLY as well as Sweeney has to.
i minored in theatre im aware of the difference i was making a point w/ specific words to enforce a contrast, however george i felt though the better actor took the roll to some places im not sure i liked as much, but i agree he's more the total package than any other stage todd. but len set the standard george followed, he built off len's choices so i feel the groundwork was laid for him. had he been the 1st i wonder how different the character would have been.
You have a deep love for plays I see.But yeah like here search "Sweeney Todd 1982 opening scene" It is a great peice.Depp has spme great qualities he was the darkest sweeney todd.';have you seen him In Edwaed Scissorhands?
i own all of burtons films and his films so yeah, but actually, u should see the sweeney todd movie that is not a musical staring Ray Winstone (beowulf's voice) now HE was creepy. but i still say Michael Cerveris was the creepiest todd i saw that revival and it was quite bizarre.

Depp: 15 years of fury
Hearn: Pride in finally executing his revenge
Cerveris: "...is the name of the person who is killing you."
Cariou: This has been a long time coming.
All of them were amazing in their own ways.

I LOVE GEORGE HEARN.

George Hearn's scream is the best but Johnny Depp comes in a very close second for being the most aggressive.
