Hugely impressive game for its time, especially if you consider it was written entirely by 1 man, something that's unheard of in today's productions, features scene sensitive music and parallax scrolling.
I remember well sitting behind my cousin's C128 playing this game in total darkness, made us crap our pants almost :-D Damn Gargoyle kicked my butt everytime!
Were there different versions of this game? In the version I played, the player had a face and the Snake stage (between the Ghoul and Demogorgon) was missing at all difficulty levels, but it was otherwise identical to this video.
Also, did you cut the dance at the end of each stage short? I know it was longer than that (with the music cycling through twice, not once).
Nope, I never played Beyond Forbidden Forest. It was this game, but without the snake stage and with a smile on the face of the player (usually when viewed directly from the side). It might have been a hacked version, I suppose, given how I acquired it.
@DerSchmu Aren't LONGplays supposed to be LONG? (: .. joking aside, I think the dancing scene is a good comparison point as to the 'old age', when it didn't seem too long, and the 'modern age', when everyone is in constant rush with no patience for anything anymore. Ideally, a longplay should contain -all- the footage that happens when you complete a game from beginning to end. Also, it's "cut", not "cutted" and it's "too long", not "to long". "Better" is an opinion, not a fact (IMHO would help)
One more thought about the dancing; it's like a happy fanfare, a 'reward' for playing well and completing a level - modern games do not have such rewarding joyous, yet simple, satisfying, fun moments anymore. People don't dance out of joy to a fanfare when you complete a level these days.. something really fun and valuable was lost when we moved to an era where this kind of dance became extinct. And you killed half that joy from this video, derschmu(ck)...
@zazelby Actually, yes, there was a version for a different computer system (the Atari-ST, maybe?) that was missing two of the enemy types - the Snake was one, I think the Frogs were the other. The game's manual had the text for BOTH versions in it ... it sounded a little odd when they rewrote the description of the Demogorgon fight to begin with "Now you've done it - you've killed the Demogorgon's pet Phantom" (Atari) instead of "pet Snake" (C64). Who keeps a pet Phantom lying around? :)
@Svenyip I meant different versions for the C64. I *know* the first time I ever played this game it didn't have the snake in it, and the main character's head was different (he had an actual face - eyes and nose - and blond hair). And since I only ever owned a C64, I know it wasn't another computer's version.
And I know it's not Beyond Forbidden Forest, since the game was otherwise 100% the same as this video. I played it dozens of times, and played BFF only once or twice.
First survival horror game ever! You don't really know what's going on, you just try to stay alive when all sorts of monsters leap at you. The music is great, the parallax effect earliest I've ever seen on a home computer. The night gets old, but more horrors try to get at you all the time.
I played this a lot when I was a kid. It was really impressive, like watching a mysterious horror movie. The sounds are quite simple but they work extremely well - for example on stage 5, the sound of a dying ghost is bloodcurdling.
wtf the music is just amazing!!!

I think you confound "Forbidden Forest" with his sequel "Beyond Forbidden Forest"
And yes, I cutted the dance scene a bit. I think it`s much to long and the longplay looks a bit better now.
