Not sure what Mercury Records was thinking, but this should have been released as an A side. It definitely had hit potential and sounds perfect for 1968.
This is such a great song and her vocal really is much stronger, sophisticated and listenable than any other single pop singer at that time. This should have been an A side.....especially considering so many pop songs at the time were definite nods to the Lesley Gore sound (ie: More Than Yesterday,Turn Down Day,Sugar Town,Love Is All Around,Like To Get To Know You,Tighter and Tighter,Feelin Groovy,Our Corner of the Night,Ooh Child etc...)
Well, it was the B side to her 1968 Mercury label single HE GIVES ME LOVE (LA LA LA) so it really didn't have a chance to chart. HE GIVES ME LOVE did deserve to be a hit but by 1968 she wasn't getting radio airplay which was a shame as she deserved it.

Can't understand why this was not a top 10 hit! It was a departure in style from her first few years of hits. Love it!!
