Tracon.....You say "No, pilots just dont control themselves into or out of an airport"...I counter with...NO, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS DONT FLY THE AIRPLANE FOR US......even though some of them act like they do. No disrespect intended since you guys do a great job....but I had to counter your point because People shouldn't think Air Traffic Controllers "Fly" the airplane for us. Cheers.
Good point, but to be sure, without ATC pilots would have real problems. It would be like removing lanes and speed limits and letting the drivers figure it out from there.
stress is what drives us to this. if you've ever been on position talking to 25 aircraft on one freq, in small congested airspace you would truely understand why we push for better benifits. most controllers love their jobs, and want these benifits to help make the job enviornment less stressful and therefor much safer. safety is key here. so the title on this video in the begininig is approproate.
to RobertPrentice...yes ATC has many benifits...you are right. lets make a slight comparrison. humor me if you will. how much money and benefits does a surgeon make? well i know they are the top paid in the country. a surgeon saves how many lives daily? how many lives does ATC save daily? yeah we dont require a rediculous amount of school. but essentially we are both in the buisness of saving lives. we want to be treated the same. btw most controllers only make it a few years past retirement.
The opening of this video says (air traffic controllers) "deserve better treatment." I'm not sure exactly what the author means. Air traffic controllers are exceptionally well treated federal employees: 1. Six figure salary 2. Only work ~4 hours per shift and can sleep, play games, etc. the rest of the time 3. Strong federal union benefits 4. Mandatory retirement age of 56. All these perks for a job that does not require a college degree! I'm surprised more burger-flippers don't apply!
More burger flippers don't apply because it is not as simple a task as you think. Controlling is all mental power, with a little talking. So saying "XXXyyy winds XXX @ XX RWY XX cleared to land" is pretty simple, but the thought process that goes behind spacing and timing is immense! Burger flippers need not apply!!!!
Understand that the 4 pts you are making refference is about U.S. ATC´s, you may know the reallity about other countries like Mexico where there´s nothing like you wrote at your message and no matter what are the conditions we always do our best, also i agree with the point of view of dizdevil05
Jesus you whiny bitch I could do that at the 3 min mark. try ROV ops.. you are trying to be a computer. robots will do your job when they relize how bad you are at manAGING IN AND OUT TRAFIC. Go your a whiner
Practice makes perfect. Eventually you'll figure out the pattern to use to control lots of aircraft at the same time. But of course, in the real world, it is way, way much more harder.
nice but I work for NATS in england ... take a look at Londons airspace and see what congested airspace means ^^ ... 5 major London airports and no space (england is rather small for it's 60 million people :D)
you work for nats? I've been looking into how to get into doing a course with them but their website is confusing. How did you go about getting into it?
i applied 2 1/2 years ago to become an ATCO ... i'm not sure what their website looks like now, but i went to their recruitment site and filled in an online application form ... good luck it's a brilliant job !!
How bout go 25 miles NE of PHL and you got the hardest airspace in the world for TMA/TRACON. The N90 Tracon, JFK LGA EWR are within 10 miles of eachother plus TEB in the middle and MMU and TTN and FRG all within 10 miles of the Major guys, NY Is the hardest, Plus philly 25 SW. London can't be compared to the N90 Tracon
As no one has worked both, you're kind of right, they can't be compared, because no body knows.Ever worked in the London TMA yourself?LL,KK,LC,GW,SS,SC,LF,KB etc,I can list airfields too,and quote passenger numbers but whats the point?I'll bet the atco at a private strip on a Saturday in summer is having just as tough a time as those of us with more staff and better equipment in the larger centres.
Radar service from the Tracon is only givin in the Air, what the hell are you ganna do when they land? show them how to get to there car and then to taco bell? your a freakin Noob
Should point out there's a severe shortage of ATCs now due to Bush administration's cuts to their pay/benefits. Many are working manditory overtime in already stressful conditions.
The Lexington, KY accident last summer illustrates this.
nice video ... although I must say that operations in the UK are more complex as there is much less airspace to work in than in the US ... feedback welcome ... a NATS controller myself (Approach)
I can probably agree with that statement in comparison to the Mid West or West. But in the northeast it can get hairy with usable strata especially in the Summer with tons of Mesoscale complexes sweeping across. That video may look like there is a little space (I should have turned the video map up a little) but that's about 4 different facilites worth in traffic.
I saw a couple gaps on final...you guys are wasting airspace!! Looks IFR to me, or is that all Class Bravo airspace? Where are the dinks??? Come on over to SCT and we'll show you that PLUS a couple dozen VFR flibs buzzing around making life miserable!!
Nice job...definitely not a stupervisor working that push!!
looks like a constant stream of flights coming onto scope. Must make trying to remember your holds a nightmare.
