Personally, I think she did, in perspective, rather good. It was a live performance, which never tend to go well. She's also trying to imitate Shiina Ringo. She's an ACTRESS not a singer. No vocal training. She got lucky, and is naturally okay at it. At best, her voice is like a good Shiina Ringo Karaoke. She's better at lower pitched songs. Her Honnou wasn't as bad as you're saying. You're being biased, and unfair, especially considering that most covers aren't as good as the original, anyways.

She's simply IMITATING Shiina. You shouldn't be so harsh in your judgement. It's not good, but it's not bad, either. Shiina is a very skilled, and talented vocalist. I've listened to her for years, so I know. Her caliber is too high to be duplicated; so, you have to take this into consideration when judging Rie's little cover performance. She's an actress primarily, so it's just like decent kareoke. Her voice is better suited for lower tones, like in Shoujo Robot. Rie gets a "B" for effort.

I know that feeling. Anyways, it's good you realized it! Also consider that this was a LONG time ago, I'm sure she's gotten lessons by now, and improved much. I'd love to see her actually duet with Shiina, or atleast provide a chorus/back-up vocal. Her voice is just a really low version, that's less good, compared to Shiina's--- I think it would complement Shiina really well.

She doesn't sound nasal. In fact, Shiina's voice is a bit on the nasally side. I think it all has to do with style. Different people's voice will sound different on a given style. Shiina's voice is just perfect for the style that she does, though she does a great job on a many of other styles. She is just a very versatile vocalist. Tomosaka Rie will be a better R&B singer than a rocker...though she does need to work on her intonation. Giver her a break, Shiina is the epitome of amazing

First of all no one can really hope to sound as awesome as Shiina Ringo. Second off all that show (Yoru mo Hippare/Night of the hit Parade or something like that) does all kinds of goofy things when it comes to the people singing the songs. It's like a countdown show with karaoke. It's really bad/strange when the middle aged people try to do uptempo songs done by artists old enough to be their kids/grandkids. But there are a lot of better clips from the show floating around somewhere.

Agree with you completely. In defense of Rie though, she does actually have a connection with Ringo (in the form of Shoujo Robot) so I'm glad it's her and not someone else.

That said, I still completely despise the whole concept of Yoru No Hippare - Karaoke singing of chart-topping songs by people besides the artists themselves (who are generally not very good) God, the number of artists they butchered. Utada...ELT...MISIA...
