My rig with 130cm sat dish and a personal design(secret) feed antenna device is providing gains around 39 db!!!! My longest connection is from Lugano(my homecity) to Milano, italy, about 100Km away from me, using my sat dish antenna and a 10W amplifier with 27 db gain in RX!!! And this is only the begin...im searching a guy living in the states for try the first transoceanic WLAN connection!!! I have plans for build 500W Microwave linear amps...someone interested?? Write me please!! Bye bye!
@SouthTuningSwiss 100Km! Wow, I've been sitting here anxiously awaiting a chinese-made yagi.. supposedly 25 db gain. I'm really hoping it at least outperforms my cantenna. I'm hoping just to get down to the next block while you're talking about across the ocean, lol! Good luck with that. Oh..500W, won't that give people breasticle cancer or something?
For WLAN frequencies a helix antenna is like a wheelchair for a healthy runner!!! Begin to play with parabolic dishes and feeding antenna design and you will believe real gain and distances over 10 km....its not a joke!!! Helix antenna is good for 70cm band but not over! Best regards from HB9ZLX
I posted that video about 4 years ago! From that time on that antenna worked well for about 2,5 years at the roof of a friends home to my "appartment" for Internet connection sharing. After that we use it for Data transfer between our two homes. works well till now!
Taht is a "normal" Helix antenna. It would remain in every "How to build an antenna" book for radio-amateurs and was only calculated for the "new" wavelength.
Not for wardriving then ? lol, Ive made something similar but ive incorporated two reflector arms something like a HDTV reflector and that boosted the signal a LOT !! ( I'll do a video soon of it when its fully completed.)
The first loop. the one closest to the reflector should run very close to the reflector for at least 1/3 turn if you want your antenna to be 50ohm the way you have it there its likely to be far from 50 ohm.
The aluminium rod in the center kills the gain. Use a plastic boom instead or use a
plastic tube for the coil.
The aluminium acts like a short circuited ballast in the center of the coil. The magnetic field exists inside the wire loops, the electrical field remains outside.
Try to measure the gain.
You will be surprised how bad it is compared to the theoretical value for the number of turns you have got.
Directivity and impedance my be ok, but the gain is what matters.
the aluminium support tube has NO effect on gain if the loops diam (tunning) is adjusted to suit.. In other words it just has a detunning effect which can be conpensated for.
A helix requires either a 84 ohm 'Q' section (quarter wavelenth) mathing stub or a special construction (widened helix close to the ground plane) for the first quarter turn.
are you a radio ham

Nice! But theoretically the gain must be about 23 dB for 52 turns.I has too much losses. Can someone made it in stub loaded helix version?

@Helloeveryone02 to made it? You have to make it first. after you make it you've made it.

Just use a tin can with a wireless card in it, and a small satellite dish to concentrate the signal inside of it.

true, you should use PVC/Plastic for the core of the boom.

I think John Kraus was the man that make the first Helical Antenna
is very very good for receiver
and transmitter if you have a paravolic dish
very very good Idea for 2.4 and 5Ghz
but you may must have helical antenna to the AP right?

like ve2zzz said, i don't see any impedance transformer. care to explain how you manage it?
agungk 4 years ago
What's the return loss of this antenna?
A helix requires either a 84 ohm 'Q' section (quarter wavelenth) mathing stub or a special construction (widened helix close to the ground plane) for the first quarter turn.
