This video is one of my favourites and the first one I saw from you channel, when I came across it I was doing a search for casio keyboards and I was impressed with the appreciation you had for those basic keyboards.Very clever hooking an organ pedal to one of them it's like a mini organ.I just got an SA-10 off Ebay it came christmas eve,for years Id been kidding myself when I said I didn't want one but they are great fun and have some great sounds.I also have a Casio PT-87 which we had from new.
you know the guitar synth pedals... I want someone to run a toy keyboard through one of those and see if it sounds like an analog synth (or close). If anyone knows of any videos where someone does that let me know.
i imagine you could get it pretty close, cause most of those old toy keyboards are analog synths, just with alot less features than an instrument designed for professional use
the synth-sound you hear from a guitar synth pedal like a Electroharmonics minisynth, or bass synth pedal, like Boss SYB-3, is the sound made from the pedals internal oscillator, and that sounds like an analog keyboard synth, timbre wise. But due to pitch- and envelopefollowers somewhat 'nervous' nature, the shape of filter and pitch will be less precise than a keyboard synth, at least using a guitar. But it tracks the pitch of purer toy keyboad sounds, like flute or organ much tighter.
Please help, im searching for my old casio toy keyboard. It looks like the first keyboard that you play. I only remember some styles like new age (it was very easy tu play). The keyboard was black, the on/off bottom red, i remember it with only one speaker at a side. It had polyphony but not more than 3 notes i think.. any clue will be of great help, thanks!
It sounds like the CASIO SA-1. However, it only has two note polyphony. There was a bigger version that had the exact same voices and rhytms but with bigger keys, two speakers, and four note polyphony. It was called the SA-20.
Have you checked some of my other CASIO videos? They are more close-up so it's easier to spot the details.
Hey Fairy, Great video. I've been getting into old Casio keyboards lately. I now have an SA-9, MT-68, MT-205 and a new CTK-810. I also have a PT-1, but it only has one sound no matter which buttons you push. My question is this: does the keyboard you use for drums have a rhythm pattern not found on your other synths? Or do you just do that to be able separate it in the mixer for different EQ etc? Thank so much. -Gary
The SA-1 and the SA-3 - the small black ones - has the same rhytms. I use the SA-3 for rhytm and bass (controlled by the pedal box). The reason I used the SA-3 for rhytm and not the SA-1 was that the rhytm tends to be a little too loud when played together with the organ sound. But bass and rhytm turned out to have the right level even if they were played on the same keyboard. So yes - it is a matter of getting the right level but I didn't use any EQ on this video.
Truly Cool! I hope its not impropriate to ask how you are controlling a SA from the pedals? Have you hardwired the pedals to the keyboard matrix or is there some kind of more complicated interface involved. I've got a bunch of small Casios myself, and even if I can't play tunes with my feet (either), I'm curious about all kind of different alternative ways off controling them.
It is simply hardwired to the keyboard. I found out how the row-an-column matrix was designed on the SA-3 and modified the pedal box so the switches in there were doing the same. Then I added a printer plug on the SA-3. The cable to the pedal box allready had such a plug at the end. And that was it.
okay, thanks for sharing. Surely thats the simple and logical way to do it. Possibly it could make sense to double the start/stop switches, and maybe even the rhythm select switch as stompbox type switches, for foot control.
I actually had a couple of switches on the pedal box for starting and stopping what was then my favourit drummachine. But the problem was that I used three different drum machines and four toy keyboards as rhytm makers. So it was an endless changing of cables and some of the machines didn't have the same switch sceme. Therefore I eventually removed the switches and used dedicated foot switches for each unit.

Agreed. This is so cool!!!
Great choice of voices too.
Quite a collection of keyboards and organs you have.
I'm building a midi-organ myself.
Programming rhythm and acmp/arp. using midi messages.
So I'm also doing the pedal thing.
The keyboard matrices on those mini keyboards sure have a lot of diodes.
Keep up the great and varied stuff!
I wish you a merry christmas.

Thanks. And you know what: Without all those little diodes all the keys would sound together :-)
