Lyric tenors...Schipa and Tagliavini among them...have had great success in this role. Although I don't really hear Matthew as the Duke, I do enjoy his thoughtful and reflective approach to this aria. He sounds as fresh today as he sounded when I first heard him over 20 years ago during the district Met auditions at Eastern Illinois University. BRAVO!!!
@warnie1 I have to agree. Tho he sings this tough aria well (Most of us tenors regard it as more difficult than the other two in the role) it simply does not suit his instrument. Listen carefully & hear the slightest bit underpitched in places & of course the b-flat gets away from him. Still, a pretty, well used voice.
This is a very good performance of a lyric tenor role by someone who sounds, here, like a lyric tenor. It is not a role for a dramatic tenor, nor is it even considered a spinto role. It has its drama, but it is a lyric aria in a lyric role. Get your facts straight!
I was Matthews first roommate in Weller Hall at Eastern Illinois University. He was always singing where ever he was going. I never knew I was in the presence of such greatness. Needless to say, he has made it much farther than I. Great Job Matt. I hope someday I have the opportunity to hear you once again live in person. Jim Langdon
Wonderful job but I don't hear the timbre and power usually associated with this role nor especially with this Aria. I love Matthew Polenzani's voice and he sings it well but I would rather hear him sing Tenore di Grazia roles rather than the heavier Tenore Drammatico.
...and while you're busy writing negative comments on YouTube about this guy, he's busy having a career as a leading tenor, currently singing Edgardo in Frankfurt and Vienna.
Really not the right voice for this. The vibrato in his high notes changes to some king of flutter and it's really annoying. He sounds like a boy, not a duke who's had I don't know how many women in his bed, even if the aria is sentimental.
He is a good singer but I have to disagree- he is not great. That label is used too frequently today. Who knows, he may have been tired, had a bit of a sniffle or whatever but Mr.Polenzani did not sing this extremely hard aria well. It showed the basic flaws in his voice and this is certainly not his rep. Good- not great. Everyone has their opinion.
I am with you. Good singer, deserving of a career and great at Mozart, Rossini etc. With that being said, this is not nearly the best rendition of this aria that you will hear.
hes an amazing singer, most likely it was not a good night, or still a bit too early for him to sing this rep, but an amazing talent with so much more to give!
Matthew Polenzani is one of the greatest singers now in the world. I have heard all his Met broadcasts since 2001 always found him a great artist, with an incomparable technique and musicality!
For me, his version is more beautiful than Pavarotti's, which is saying a lot.

@reduxmisc Obviously, you do not know that according to Riccordi it is acceptable to use "angioli."

I think your comment is rude and ignorant. I think Matthew Polenzani did a great job in this and all the pieces he sang at this gala.
