Why i use the HDMI cable to connect to the monitor, at first havent record is ok, but once press the record button it become black sscreen and no sync, after few second it stop adi.
I check back the play back, it just record 1 second of the movie only.
I notice that my Manhattan 8.9 shows an overexposed image when monitoring even though the recorded image looks perfectly fine. I also noticed that in your video (if you compare the Ikan and the Manhattan). It's ideal to focus with but not very reliable to monitor lighting or color.
@iamboy1234 It's definitely a good idea to go into the menu of any monitor you're using, and adjust the color, brightness, contrast and hue settings. Unfortunately, DSLRs don't give you a "color bars" test pattern to work from, so it does involve a little bit of guesswork. However, your perception of the monitor will also change based on ambient light, etc., so as long as you get it close, you should be alright.
@chiscoarce Haven't used it yet. One thing I noticed after I'd been working with the Manhattan for a while is that it switches from SD to HD quite quickly. Other brands (like Lilliput) give you a black screen for 5 or more seconds after you press "record" on the 5D.
Thanks for this tutorial. I just discovered information on the Jag35 7" Monitor. Priced at a reasonable $249 it seems like it will work for me in the field and should adopt to the Handy SLR. I know it is not HD, but how much does that really matter if the image is bright and sharp enough to effectively focus? Would love your thoughts.
@jaredcicon HD vs. SD is not that big of a deal, since the output of the camera during recording is only SD anyway. I would be interested to try the Jag35 monitor, but haven't done so yet. Let me know what you think, if you pick one up!
@TrueStoryTV Using a monitor makes it easier to shoot low-angle and high-angle shots, and it's a lot nicer when you're working with a client. How hard is it to focus with an SD signal? That's a difficult thing to quantify, but it's definitely easier to focus on the fly vs. using the built-in LCD.

So it does make sense to use a monitor, even though the 5d doesn't output HD? How hard is it to focus with an SD signal?
