Seens alot of Firefighter Trucks with don't Fuel the Burn! To me fuel the burn means having Outdated Level-2 Cache CPUs getting Fried, giving Firefightes a toxic cyanide headache during a rescue! Used to Know a FireChief who fooled around with VSA Napalm! Nice to have that equipment that can handle the heat during intense video game sesssions, where some people lose it and fry your stuff! Those Killzone 3 Venators can turn everything to Cinder, we could run out of water, turn into Middle East
Could it have been the upper coupler or king pin plate on the trailer. Those things are notorious for rusting and need to be replaced every few years depending on the local road and weather conditions.
I think the driver just hooked up the loaded trailer, the kingpin jaws didn't lock(for some odd reason) and the first turn ho took, the trailer flew off.
This may also explain why the tractor is not sideways with the trailer.
if the jaws didnt lock on, the driver couldnt have gotten the trailer that far. if i had to guess, the 5th wheel mighta been severed from the frame. same situation with the I-75/9 mile rd. tanker fire near detroit, the truck and trailer came apart since the 5th wheel was still hooked to the trailer
@flyrock45 if the jaws didnt lock he would have just drove right out from under it and the trailer wouldnt have moved... i bet the king pen was weak and broke going around the corner
@flyrock45 improper lock adjustment or worn fifth wheel lock assembly is a common inspection rule in dot handbooks and most training methods focus on the 5th wheel brakes and airlines so with out an investigation your guess is as good as any
good. If its already burning let it finish, ground contaminated with fuel is very expensive to clean up; far more then the cost of the entire truck and road repairs combined.
Yes, the road is concrete. However, the heat destroyed it (it was in pieces after the fire) so it was paved with blacktop a couple days later. Some weeks after that, the repaired section was completely replaced with new concrete.
Was this a Walthers Truck? We put one of theirs out about 25 miles south. When the 1st unit arrived on scene the tractor was fully engulfed. Tanker had 7200 gallons of gasoline. Used remote front nozzle to extinguish truck. Burned the diesel tanks on the tractor down to the fuel level.
Well yall have to look at it like this........."should we let it burn out or put water on it let the fuel just spread causing a bigger catastrophy! also causing more than likley extremly bad"

Where the HECK is the fire truck? Good question! It is behind me (I'm holding the camera) and up the hill. The decision was made by the fire department that it would be best to just let this truck burn itself out rather than spreading the fuel around by spraying it with water. So, the firemen stayed and watched the tanker burn for several hours til after midnight sometime (I had gone to bed by then)
The fifth wheel pins bent and the trailer came unhooked but the truck had quite a few shut down vilotions also. We live in rural kansas we are not that concerend about that amout of pollution.
10,000 gal of diesel would put him way over wieght. I haul fuel and my rig is very light. I can only carry 7700 gals and that puts me very close to 80,000. diesel is about 7.2 lbs per gal. that means he weighted 72,000 + about 25,000 for the truck and trailor.97,000 lbs. that's 17,000 over. Know wonder the king pin broke.
Thanks for your comments. My statement of "10,000 gallons..." was based on what a firefighter on the scene told me. I would be more inclined to rely upon an OTR driver's knowledge, so thanks for posting the correction.
BTW, I also don't know if that tanker was fully loaded or not. There is also the possibility that the load wasn't (just) diesel. I assume that different fuels may be carried in each compartment.

Don't know who told you it had 10,000 gals of diesel. That truck would have been way over weight. 7500 - 7700 is the norm for carrying diesel.

MC 306 tankers that are burning don't explode, they melt down to the burning fuel lone. They are in no danger.

Yes, I do believe it was a Walthers truck. This was some months before they allegedly filed bankruptcy.
BTW, I feel bad for the Wonderful Chinese Restaurant North of Concordia since that Walthers truck stop closed.

I am sorry but the truck was not owned by walters oil co.

zone 4 fire depts from lancaster county, pa
would have used pyrocap b-136 its great on flammable fires superior knock down works great thru cafs. 30 to 55 gals or less complete knock down

"no immediate hazard to people or livestock."??
What about the pollution? Don't they have foam or detergents to help put this fire out?
jsnasselin 4 years ago
the pollution would be worse to let it seep into the ground water. key word: immediate

I haul fuel also. 8,000 of diesel and 8,800 of gas puts me just under 80,000 lbs.
