  • no macbook?? ^^

  • @KhaoShung Of course, I have i7 MBP but in this video I was using my new Toshiba Qosmio. The Mac came later. Keep in mind this video is almost 3 years old.

  • hey man, im thinking about getting the gemini cdj 700s with the pioneer djm 700 mixer and i was wondering if i needed timecoaded cds and or an sl box? and if not how would i connect it with scratch live? i belive the geminis have a built in sound card...

    thanks

    DJ Pace

  • @14pacer Yes, you will need the timecoded CDs but I could be wrong. I am not familiar with the CDJ-700s by Gemini

  • Hi there, I have a cdj-350 and Sertao SL3 I connected everything the way you showed on your YouTube video with the cdj-400 I can load the songs on my laptop everything looks good the only problem when I press the play button on any of the cdj-350 nothing is responding!!! However I can load scroll and do everything from the cdj-350 but play the song. Can you help..?

    and btw Happy new year!

    Thx.

    Haim

  • @haim1125 Do you have the last update of Serato ?

  • @SuperErin21 Yes, I always use the latest updates

  • @haim1125 It must be related to the way you have the sound settings. Sorry for the late reply, there are so many videos I am trying to answer questions. Have you figured it out yet?

  • Do i've got to do the same steps if i have cdj-1000's ??

  • @Leodernoob Yes except you will need to use the timecode CDs

  • do i need serato to hook up cdjs to a computer??? plz help

  • @ThisIsRemixXD Not if you have the right type of CDJs. Serato is only the interface software between the CDJs and the computer

  • great video! after watching this, i might just upgrade and buy SL3!!

    :-)

  • @wambamram Might as well get the SL4!!

  • hey rudedog is serato live scratch is the same as serato sl3? iam a little confused with them

  • @NewYorkRicky Serato Scratch Live is the software and the SL3 is the hardware

    DJ RuDe

  • @NewYorkRicky i have everything set up, but for some reason my cdj's will not show "left deck" , "right deck" when i press the USB button... I didn't know if I needed to delete my scratch live software and re-upload/download it or if you might know of a simple solution... thanks and nice video.

    - Jack

  • @TheBARRISSS I have been so inundated with answering questions on my videos, sorry I'm behind. Did you ever figure out the issue?

  • Hi,

Great video thank you. What does that power conditioner do exactly to protect your material?

    Thnx

  • 1) Can you use the sound cards inside the 400s (still have the SL box connected)?

    2) Can you still play normal CDs? How?

    Thanks!

    Brian

  • hey rudedog so i got the sl3 it came with the 2 blank vinyls, however i would like to use serato with the 400s like you have done in the video. so do i need to get the serato cds for it to work or can i just hook up to serato?

  • @Benjkat89 Nope, the CDJ-400s do not require the timecode CDs! It is MIDI/HID which means it is built in.

    DJ RuDe

  • Hey thanks for the great tutorial! I was wondering where the black power cable should be connected to? Thanks :)

  • @ramboll09 Which black power cable? For the CDJs? in the back. For the mixer? In the back. For the SL3? In the back. We are talking about the AC power cable correct?!

    DJ RuDe

  • great video man!

  • great video man!

  • Awesome video, thanks for taking the time to put so much detail and clear explanation in! I've got a pair of CDJ400's and DJM400 and looking to go down the digital solution so I can mix music off my PC rather than having to load up USB stick every time. I might upgrade my DJM400 to the DJM800 to have MIDI for this too. Please could you send me the 'wiring diagram' you mentioned in the vid as I'm still a bit confused about how the DJM800 midi control works through SL3. Thanks man! :)

  • I'd like to infrom you that you don't need to use the rca cables from the cdj400 to the sl3 if using native mode.

  • @ 741: Belkins 7 port powered USB hub should do the trick for multiple USB connections, n that's what I use

  • Great video man! You've got lotsa patience! I use serato with dns1200s, pretty setup though!

  • I have two turntables and two cdj's. Is there anyway I can hook them all up to my serato interface?

  • @MrWant2Know Which Serato interface do you own? The SL1 or SL3? The SL1 will only allow 2 units at one time whereas the newer and much better SL3 has the capability for up to three units whether the be turn tables or CDJs...

    Paul

  • @MrWant2Know I have the SL3. I actually just bought a piggy back rca coupler cable to connect both tables and cdj's to the same inputs; hoping that would work. Haha, but when the cdj is active or turned on with the time coded cd in it, it interferes with the time coded vinyl, so the cdj either has to be turned off or the disc ejected.

Anyway, I solved my problem the inexpensive way :D

  • @MrWant2Know You can eiter cmobine 2 serato interfaces or buy serato sl4 :)

  • Name of the song at 0:51 ?

  • Name of the song at 0:51 ?

  • Hey DJ Rude: My SL3 only came with 1 blue USB cord to attach from my laptop to the sl3. You mentioned in the video I need 1 more USB for each of the cdj400s. Where do they plug into from the CDJ400 to what?

Your videos are helpful. Thank you.

  • @121JiggawattJiggawho:

The cdj 400's go into your laptop from the back of the players to a usb port. You may need a hub

  • @741Rampage I do use a hub. It's a 7 port hub that I use to connect 4 hard drives, both CDJ-400s, A MIDISport Uno USB to MIDI for my DJM-800 mixer's MIDI features.

  • Hey DJ Rude: My SL3 only came with 1 blue USB cord to attach from my laptop to the sl3. You mentioned in the video I need 1 more USB for each of the cdj400s. Where do they plug into from the CDJ400 to what?

  • Why doesn't the lights on the loop buttons light up? =(

  • @RudeDog66 Excellent tutorial mate, learned pretty much everything I need to know.! Making the transition over from Traktor soon.. Thanks so much for the upload, really informative!

  • Allright, let's say i'm using Serato with my CDJ 400's and all of a sudden,i would like to switch to a USB thumb drive on the other player to scratch up some samples with the built in platter effects on the CDJ! I know it dosen't work in Serato so that's why i wanna switch over to the thumb drive!

Can you use Serato and switch to a thumb drive to scratch some samples and then go back to Serato with no problems?

  • @ReboyGTR I have never tried that but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work but the other hand I would say that doing it that way would be a redundant method. I have scratch samples on my hard drive that I keep in a "scratch samples" crate in Serato. They work just as well as in a crate on your regular HD as they would on a CD or a thumb drive, it is the same exactly.

  • @RudeDog66 As i said, the platter effecsts dosen't work in Serato! So if i would like to use em i would need to either play a CD with samples or from at thumb drive! CD is allright because you got a button on the unit that says CD but accessing the thumb drive would be harder because you pressed the USB button to use Serato and i'm trying to use a USB thumb drive!

  • @ReboyGTR yeah man, you can def do it if you have the digital cable attached to use it native with serato, you need to click the THRU button which means the signal is now coming from either your cds or usb, make sure you click the usb button to load the thumbdrive! then wen u want to go back to serato again just click the thru button off again! not sure if this works with the time code cds! i find them fkn useless

  • @horspool76 I got 400's and Serato now so i know it works. With timecode, you'll have to be ABS or REL mode,or use the timecode tone to scrach and make wierd noises with! xD

  • @ReboyGTR If you want to use the built in effects in the 400, you just switch the mode on the 400 to memory stick, you also have to flip the switch on the mixer (or use another channel on the mixer) so you get the audio through the rca cables.

  • Were can i get this mix of songs in the beggining?

  • so with the 400's you don't need the time code cd's?

  • wtf intro

  • is there a way to make serato go with the cd-j 200s? Because they don't even have usb ports I believe

  • awsome demo explained everything answered all my questions .... cheers dj rude

  • what are time codes?

  • cant you just connect the cdj to the laptop with the usb cable, and miss out the serato box (and save £400 in the process)???

  • @al210993 No you can't, not with Serato. The box acts as a USB dongle that is required to activate the software. Without it you can only use the interface like iTunes or WMP but your hardware will not control it, thus negating any real purposeful use for a DJ...

  • @ljamesvh Guitar Center

  • wurstpunika!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Can i use Serato SL 3 with Cdj 800????

  • @djtanzil99 Yes, the Pioneer CDJ-800 is usable with the Rane Serato SL3, you must use the provided timecode CDs...

  • Can i use Serato SL 3 with Cdj 800????

  • Nice video, question for you though....Can't you use SL3 in navtive mode for cdj 400 thereby elminating the rca cables to the box?

  • hey i have a question: i know what the usb, the RCA cables are used for. but what is the small black cable needed for? on the CJD 400 it says "Control"

  • @741Rampage The control output on the player is used for the Fader Start feature on Pioneers mixers

  • In order to use Serato properly you will need approved controllers and either an SL3 or SL1 Serato box/soundcard/USB dongle or a Rane mixer with Serato soundcard built in such as the TTM57SL

  • RudeDog, Do you need a sound card on your computer or can i just use my onboard sound on my motherboard?

  • Would love a wireing diagram dude, can u send it to

    shooter_collard@me.com Thx

  • Yeah in virtual Dj u can use any sound card u want in traktor too only with serato u need rane's hardware i guess this is the way to keep out the piracy :)

  • @ownlab Very true and a great idea. It allows Rane to continue the development of the software because people have to buy the hardware for it to work, such as a software dongle. This way the revenue is a steady flow and improvement to the software and development are not hindered by freaking pirates!

  • @RudeDog66

So you dont need a SL3 Box if your going to use virtual DJ you jsut plug them in the USB port please im really keen to learn i want to start DJing im a fast learner!

  • @TnJFilms1 That's right, you don't need the SL3 to run VDJ but I must also mention that the SL3 won't work as a soundcard for any other software EXCEPT Serato. The SL1 will work not the SL3. CDJ-400s have their own soundcard anyway so just use that for VDJ like I do...

  • Do the cdj effects still work through serato? and do i need to download firmwire of pioneers website?

  • @TheEketone Not when used in MIDI/HID mode. You should always download the latest firmware/drivers

  • how do you have the sl3 hooked to your stand? i have the sl1

  • @davidterry1571 with a long Velcro strip, it will work similarly with the SL1

  • i thought the serato breakout box is only for using timecode and you can just use usb from cdj to laptop and phono from cdj to the mixer

  • Will this set up work with SL1?

  • can you also do it with the arc 3 or the axis 9 ???

  • why didnt you just use the cdj 400 as a soundcard?

  • It is

  • @nickthedj214 In order to serato to work it has to work with the SL3 (in this case) it cant work with any other soundcard, only with rane hardwares

  • @nickthedj214 In order to serato to work it has to work with the SL3 (in this case) it cant work with any other soundcard, only with rane hardwares

  • @ownlab This is true, The SL3 is the soundcard. In virtual DJ the soundcard is the CDJ-400 with ASIO.

  • so i gotta ask: how did you connect your sl3: i have the SL-1 and if i plug the usb (midi) cables into my laptop AND i connect my cd players to the sl-1 box via rca at the same time i get some kind of malfunction.

can you use midi and cd at the same time?, i can either use timecode OR usb but if i use midi (over usb) i cannot play regular cd's

    am i doing something wrong?

  • You have to connect both RCA & USB for it to work. Are you using CDJ-400s? If so make sure you have the "USB" button pressed and illuminated for using Serato and the "CD" button pressed & illuminated for playing CDs.

    DJ RuDe

    Keep Spinnin'!!

  • Heey Dj Rude, why do you have almost every EQ knob on your mixer set to the 3 'o clock position?

    what's the use of that?

  • I keep my EQ buttons at the 3 o'clock position cause I'm a knob tweaker, I use the EQ knobs for effects when mixing Trance & House sets as well as the Color effects and the other effects available on my DJM-800. The 3 o'clock position of the EQ knobs is a good default starting point for me...

  • serato can work with my cdj 800mk2 ???

  • Yes it will using the provided timecode discs

  • So what is the purpose of connecting rcas to the sl3 when u are basically usin midi

  • Rane requires the box to use Serato because the box acts as a software dongle to prevent pirated use of the program. Whether or not your players are MIDI it doesn't matter, the box is necessary. Virtual DJ doesn't require a box which is why so many people use a cracked copy of the software.

    DJ RuDe

  • hi my friend! u did good tutorial thanks!

I want to ask you, what are you useing for care your sytem! ı mean about electric! u pushed one button and all your system turn on! can u tell me name of it?

    thanks

  • @djdeha I use a Furman PL+C Power Conditioner. All of my components are plugged into it and controlled by a single switch. It also protects your equipment from electrical surges.

    DJ RuDe

  • haber si lo explicas en español

  • hey nice vid, but i thought the cdj dont need serato because they have standart usb Oo im confused

  • Hey Rudedog thanks for everything so far!

I hooked up serato SL1 to my djm-800 but I cannot get any sound from my heaphones!

I have cdj-1000s and hooked up serato output line 1 to cd/digital 1 and the same for output 2

    Any suggestions/

  • Do you put the rca to line or cd on the djm-800

  • Channel 1 & 2 are the ones I use for my CDJ-400s and they are plugged into the CD/Digital side of the switch. I'm actually plugged into both RCA & Digital but my RCAs run through my Serato SL3 first then into the mixer.

    DJ RuDe

    Keep Spinnin'!!

  • I just plugged in RCA not digital. Could this be the reason why I am not getting any sound from my headphones?

And I also did do RCA to Serato than to mixer

  • What power conditioner do you recommend? I am looking at the Furman 8x but i dont know if that will be sufficient

  • I use a Furman PL-Plus C

  • setup looks so much sweeeeeter with a big laptop.

  • hey i was wodrering wat usb hub u have plz reply

  • I am using a Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 - 7 Port Hub. I bought it from the Guitar Center.

    DJ RuDe

  • Quick question Mr. Rude. i have 2 cdj 400's and a djm 400 mixer which i just got like 2 days ago.

I want to know how its possible to connect my cdjs to the laptop to a DJ software program, and then to my mixer, and then to my audio output. Is it possible to use my equipment running through software just to see a waveform of the song and its key/bpm in the software ? Thanks

  • No, you have to use digital music running through your laptop into the players and then to your audio equipment...

    DJ RuDe

  • what other laptop can i buy besides a mac for serato sl3

  • I use a Toshiba Qosmio X305 Q708 running Windows Vista Ultimate. Any XP, Vista or 7 machine with 3 gigs of ram should be sufficient for Serato.

    DJ RuDe

  • Thanks Dj Rude

  • Can you PM where you bought your stuff? Seems like the serato DJM 800 is overall a better setup than the 57SL. Loved this vid btw, gj

  • Thanks for the props!

I always buy my gear at the Guitar Center in San Bernardino, CA

    DJ RuDe

  • Have you used the Rane TTM 57SL?

  • @oclifefitness

Yes I have, it's a great mixer but I like my SL3 Pioneer DJM-800 combo better.

  • Longest intro ever!Good vid tho

  • I have a Gemini PS-02 mixer. Will this mixer work with scratch live?

  • @CshinFrDaPshin

any mixer and or cd players/vinyl turntables will work with serato either via timecode mode or midi/usb

  • hi there , i was wondering if you could help me , i have a cdj 400 , two of them and a djm 400 mixer , i have virtual dj pro 6 aswell. when my cdj's are in cd mode they work perfectly , how ever when in usb mode working with vdj the , cdj on screen are opposite so , if i play the left cdj it will come up as the right one in vdj --- pls can u help with this and also , both cdj's play on the left hand channel and when i move the crossfader to the right all the music stops , PLEASE HELP

  • I havent been into DJing for long, but i have VDJ, and i dont have turntables.. but i would make sure that under the configuration, and under the remote tab, make sure that left CDJ is set up to the left deck and right with the right...

I have no idea if that is going to work, or if it will even help, but thats what i think your problem might be...

  • when i open vdj theres no remote tab ???????

  • when you open VDJ there should be a CONFIG button and in the window that pops up there should be a remote tab...

  • cheers mate but on vdj6 there isnt a remote tab :S

  • Can you put the timecode cd's in the cdj-1000's so you can use them with serato?

  • Daaaamn, you're loaded with technologies and very organized. Nice explanation, too. I don't nice equipments like you, but does the serato work well with numark axis4 cdjs? Would appreciate your answer. cheers

  • @sohigh2die

Yes, Serato will work with any CDJ or turntables in timecode mode.

    Thanks for the positive comments!

  • Nice Setup. I'm running similar setup but with sl1 and DJM-400 mixer. Love this setup. Only draw back is that you lose the on board effects on the CDJ-400s and there is no way to midi map them to something useful. They really need to address that.

  • Dj Rude, I have a about the same set up, i have a cdj's 1000 and djm 800 and i just got my serato sl3. some how i can't get it to work. can you help me out. Thank you!!!

  • ?? why bother pluggin in the cdj's to sl3, the sl3 is the sound card so you be better to put the cdj's straight into your mixer for cd/usb playing and cut down on cables or am i missing something here?

  • I just like it that way...

  • @foulmouthc1:

Yeah I'd like to know this 2! Why don't you just put the red/white cables directly into your DJM800, and use the CDJ-soundcards (external mode)? I'd really like to know :) , 'cause I think I'm missing something here...

  • @rschuman1

You can't bypass the SL3 and only use the CDJ's soundcards in Serato. You must have the SL3 in the middle or it will not work. The SL3 is not only a soundcard but a software dongle as well.

    DJ RuDe

  • Thx for the response! I use it with Traktor. In. Traktor it's possible without the SL3.

  • @rschuman1

Yes, absolutely true. The same with Virtual DJ, you don't need an external soundcard, you will use the built-in soundcard on the CDJ-400. Serato requires their proprietary box to operate the SSL software

  • Dj Rude what kind of crossover did you have in this video also which power conditioner

  • All of my crossovers are built-in to my powered speakers. The power conditioner is a Monster Power Pro2500.

I'm also using a BBE Sonic Maximizer 882i and a dbx DriveRack PX Powered Speaker Optimizer/EQ.

    DJ RuDe

  • DJ Rude can you help me out here ?

Im getting my basic setup in a couple of months and im wondering if i should get 2x TT + mixer + serato OR 2x CDJ + mixer.. im just a beginner so the less i spend the better at this point. I plan on upgrading later on when i get settled into DJing. What do you suggest ?

  • Btw just to give you more info, id like to play trance & house + a little bit of everything. And id like to play at parties and hopefully move on to clubs in the future

  • I would recommend CDJs + mixer & Serato. The future is here and USB capable CDJs are the way to go. Nothing against vinyl except the limitations.

    DJ RuDe

    Keep Spinnin'!!

  • take it this works in the same way as serato 1.9.1 ?? thanks

  • I believe that was 1.9.1 that I was using in this video. Either way even if it was 1.9, yes it will work.

  • What model # is your Odyssey flight case for this setup, thanks.

  • Odyssey FZ12CDIW

  • Okay, dilemma here..

I need to find a solution for starting out djing, but, i want to be able to use usb connection to avoid burning cd's for everything (like the CDJ400's) buuuuuuuuuuuuut, the problem is.. i cant quite afford the 400's yet, unless i want to waste time saving money.

Is there any cheaper solution where i could have the usb connection so i can just use all the songs on my hardrive directly to decks or what not?? Please and Thanks :)

  • finally someone without an english accent, thanks for the great information, also great video on how to build a booth. i have a question, what is the name of the song playing at 5:40. thank you bro.

  • Shiny Disco Balls - Who Da Funk

Thanks for the positive comment. When I first started YouTubing back a few years ago I was stunned by all of the British DJs out there. I didn't know it was a big thing over there like it is here. I almost think it's bigger over there!!

There's some great UK DJs you have to admit.

    DJ RuDe

  • So by using USB to your computer you don't have to use the CDs? Why do you do that? Is it faster?

  • By using USB instead of CDs I can have over 100,000 songs available and not have to carry a bunch of CDs. Imagine how many CDs 100,000 songs is?

It's faster because all I have to do is type the song name or artists and it comes up instantly. With CDs you can find what you want, load it and have it nearly as fast as with a DJ software program and all of your music on an external hard drive.

    DJ RuDe

  • That's not what I meant. I meant using a time-coded CD. If you run it with USB only you don't need the CD? And is it faster to do it that way lol

  • Right, in USB mode no timecode CDs are necessary. It has nothing to do with being faster but what it does is allow you to see tracks in the CDJ window and have greater control over the software. USB mode is MIDI/HID control.

    DJ RuDe

  • Ahh nice. Because when my friend uses Serato on his CDJ (1000), it's only one infinite track. With USB you can pretty much use it as if you actually had CDs in them?

  • Yup, exactly! I love my 400s but soon I will be changing them out for the new CDJ-2000s which are a more advanced USB model. They release in December.

    DJ RuDe

  • Ah nice. You should get the 900s though. That slip cue function is pretty raw.

  • Are SL1 and SL3 compatible with Pioneer cdj200s?

  • Yes, the S1 or SL3 will work with any CDJ or turntable if used with the provided timecode CDs or vinyl.

    DJ RuDe

  • Hi great video thanks so much! I run serato with a box, mixer, and tables with control vinyls. However, I dj a lot of parties with my buddy who uses Hercules RMX with Virtual DJ.

My question: If I have my serato box and laptop, can I control Serato with his Hercules RMX unit? Would the jog wheels be able to control serato digitally?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Amazing tutorial, what are the names of the tunes in the presentation at the beggining?

...alcohol, drugs... + the other one, (i don't really know how to describe it!) :)

    Thanks, C.

  • rave is king by fukkk offf

  • great video, thanks for posting!!

  • i have a pair of CDJ400 and i set it up gud with VDJ but i started practing at home n i noticed that the effect buttons on the CDJ's work with the effects provided on VDJ. the effects that were assigned were Beatgrid, Backspin, and Break. then i pressed the hold button on the CDj's n they got lost. now my question is can u please try 2 c if u can help me cuzz i tried replacing them but nuthing happens i uninstalled the software n installed it back but nuthing. any suggestions??

  • wow nice!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i have the cdj 400s myself but i wonder what the point of this is? since the 400s allrdy have usb connectors on them. Dont you save alot of money by just buying 2x usb flash drives and play mp3s from them?

  • can you use one cdj400 and one cdj1000 mk3? If so in what ways could you set up both cdj's to your laptop?

  • You can't use both because one is a "timecode" and the other is "HID" supported. You will need an external soundcard to run any timecodes with Virtual DJ.

    DJ RuDe

  • Hi, great video. Im thinking of switching to VDJ'ing, with midi hardware, but just wondering, if say i load a music video into scratch live, will the cdj-400 functions still work as well as the functions on the mixer OR will they simply act as controllers for the app only?
