I traded options when I was younger. You take advantage of leverage. You could buy 100 shares(a board lot) or by 100 option contracts and you will see how the profit can be magnified by option contracts. A profit of $2000 could be $20000 for the same outlay. If you buy the shares you have time on your side.

MF went under because of a lot of giant bets made directly by Corzine went sour. He clearly couldn't make margin requirements and needed to put up customer cash so his bad positions wouldn't be liquidated for cash, and then things got worse causing them to become illiquid.
