its Demons.. these things come from hell, and they attempted an attack before the current timeline but they failed, later they attacked again and it worked, hellgates are a means of transportation for the demons from hell, to earth so they are technically refered to as Demons. Aliens would refer to extraterestrials from outer space, conspiracies, and whatnot.
